Do you get homesick when on holiday?

I have always struggled with travel and being away from home. Even as a child I hated sleepovers as I just wanted to be in my bed.

All holidays I go on (good and bad) I struggle with homesickness. I just feel so sad at night time and long to be home.

It’s annoying because I do like travel and it’s not like I have an amazing home to get back to! It just seems to be something that’s a part of me.

I can remember sobbing all night on a school trip abroad aged 13. I had a good time during the day but dread came over me at night. It’s the same now I am an adult although I manage not to sob.

Is anyone else like this?

Yes I get homesick. Well, more dogsick. I miss my dog more than anything. I picture him wondering where I am & missing me🤣

Dear Lord, no. I have never been homesick, and as a teenager I was always desperate to be away from home. Now, although I'm happy at home, I love travel and go away as often as possible. The hardest part of lockdown for me was going something like 4 or 5 months without a single night away from home - grim.

I think you're me.. 😁

I'm not talking about jetting all over the world either but exploring places in the UK too: it's actually a beautiful island

Never get homesick - I’d spend at least half the year travelling if I could. I love where I live but I never miss it 🤷‍♀️

LizzieBennett73 · 06/08/2024 21:10

I'm a total homebird and only really enjoy a holiday when the whole family (kids and grandkids come too). Never holiday without the dogs, especially with our older boy. Every moment is too precious and he's got horrid separation anxiety.

I normally have nightmares about burglars for the first 5 nights, then work the dreams the last…. We have house sitters (friends) and I could stay another week!!

Easipeelerie · 06/08/2024 21:13

No. I worry a lot about my cats (even though they’re just cats). I can’t bear the whole process of getting someone to cat sit (cos of my social anxiety) then worrying they’re looking after them alright.
Its not even that I’m an animal lover. I got the cats for my daughter but I worry a lot about them because they’re my responsibility.

I get holiday sick when I'm home.

Pinkchilli · 06/08/2024 21:17

Yes totally! Get anxiety when abroad hate the thought of going away for more than a few days. Don’t get the appeal of holidays. People think I’m weird but I don’t care!

letmego24 · 06/08/2024 21:17

I love travelling but do feel a bit sad / lonely / homesick at the same time if I'm on my own !!

Do you not like the city / country you have visited or is it just the accommodation?

I don’t think that’s a factor. I feel this way whether I like the place or not. If I am really enjoying the holiday I still get a feeling of homesickness. Although it’s worse if I don’t like it.

I have had amazing holidays and still felt homesick.

It’s annoying as I feel it’s getting worse as I get older. I can feel myself never wanting to go anywhere. I don’t really want to be like that.

That is such a shame @Pennydropping to save their long and then be disappointed.

Pennydropping · 09/08/2024 17:24

tonight is my last night! Flying home tomorrow ☺️

In my defence I’m from a small English city and where I’m staying has had shootings nearby while I have been on holiday. Safe city my arse!

niki26 · 09/08/2024 21:52

I get it. For me it's almost an anticlimactic feeling I think? Beforehand I'm so busy prepping and packing, then the journey....then we are finally there and instead of relief it's a different feeling....almost a sense of foreboding for the return packing and travelling home just 6 days later?! I'm not sure! Does that make sense?! That makes it sound like I don't enjoy the time there and I generally do, but I can't fully relax maybe.

This would explain why I'm tempted to go back to the same hotel as last October half term - as I already know the etiquette and my kids loved the kids club! I feel almost like I'd be more relaxed this time as I'd know what to expect from the start!

Are you visiting the US @Pennydropping ? Wondering where you are .

Have a good journey home and hope you enjoy your next holiday a bit more .

I get horrendously homesick, even if I'm away with my family. I don't think I've ever had a holiday where I've not cried because I want to go home early and I often have gone home early where it was logistically possible

I am autistic though and can't stand the change from my normal routine and surroundings, I've been the same since I was a child

UnctuousUnicorns · 09/08/2024 23:05

I should say that I haven't been abroad since 2018. Any holidays or short breaks since then have been in the UK, either in our touring caravan or hotels, so we've always had proper tea, wherever we've been. Any breaks longer than four nights have been in our caravan, with our dog and DC3, sometimes DC2 as well (DC1 has left home). So it's all rather familiar, which helps.
