Do you get homesick when on holiday?

BlueButterflyHome · 03/08/2024 21:08

I have always struggled with travel and being away from home. Even as a child I hated sleepovers as I just wanted to be in my bed.

All holidays I go on (good and bad) I struggle with homesickness. I just feel so sad at night time and long to be home.

It’s annoying because I do like travel and it’s not like I have an amazing home to get back to! It just seems to be something that’s a part of me.

I can remember sobbing all night on a school trip abroad aged 13. I had a good time during the day but dread came over me at night. It’s the same now I am an adult although I manage not to sob.

Is anyone else like this?

Yep Op , I love getting away but I get such a lonely feeling when I'm not in my own city , even worse when I have to travel alone without dh and kids. Just a weird unsettling feeling

bananaboats · 05/08/2024 18:55

I've never felt homesick - I cry when I need to come home 😂

Lovechilleddays · 05/08/2024 18:57

I do op (despite my username).

I went on a couple of 2 week holidays when I was younger and I absolutely hated it and couldn't wait to get home.

As I've got older and had my own family I have learnt to enjoy holidays, but I still get very homesick.

To me , bring homesick is a dreadful feeling of not belonging, being out of place, not being able to relate to anything around me.
It's very powerful and makes me feel empty and hopeless.
Night time and sleep is a relief.
I suppose I long for familiar streets and surroundings but it's not that I'm missing a specific thing like a pet or my bed. The feeling is too generalized and all pervasive.
I'm in my 70's now and I manage it because I'm aware that I will return to my familiar surroundings .
And we holiday in the UK going to known p places. So the homesickness , while still there, is less powerful.

I get cat-sick, if that's a phrase. I miss my cats terribly and keep wondering what they are doing at any given moment. I don't get homesick on holiday but I do if travelling for work.

Yes it all of that! And I guess in general life I feel a bit like I never fit even though I'm "normal".

No.
Why do you go away if you hate being away from home?

I know you weren't asking me, but isn't it obvious.

Holidays are seeing different places, having an experience, getting away from your usual routine, seeing a beautiful or interesting place, plus you do it for your family.

ImthatBoleyngirl · 05/08/2024 19:02

Only if I'm not with DH and my kids.

Yes. That's why I never get homesick because I enjoy doing all of those, and am very careful about choosing holidays that I know I will enjoy. I only have DH to factor in. Also, we only go away for a week at a time (which isn't long enough for me)

stargirl1701 · 05/08/2024 19:15

Nope. Never felt homesick. I am a Third Culture Kid. Just fit in with wherever you are.

Iwant2beJessicaFletcher · 05/08/2024 19:31

I've always been like it although it's better now I'm older. I love going on holidays but could never go without either dh or 1 of my DC as I would feel too homesick.

I've figured it's not my home so much that I miss, but being with the people I feel safe & comfortable with. I suppose I get some sort of 'away from familairity' anxiousness & I'm the least anxious person there is at any other time!

I manage it by only going away with someone from my own family - a holiday with friends would be my worst nightmare as I just would feel lonely & worried, despite there being nothing to worry about. It's always worse at night too.

UnctuousUnicorns · 05/08/2024 19:48

No. I live in Glasgow. This year we've stayed away for short breaks in our touring caravan in Northumberland and Cheshire, plus hotel breaks Dundee, Birmingham and Liverpool. We've also been away for 10 nights in Shropshire and two weeks in North Yorkshire, again in our caravan, and we're just back from a lovely four night stay at a B and B in Northumberland again. I love travelling and seeing other places. I never feel homesick.

User0311 · 05/08/2024 19:50

I always look forward to being back home

I find that quite strange. My best trips are when I travel solo as don't have to compromise for others

NewName24 · 05/08/2024 21:39

No.

If I've ever been away for a longer period - say 3 weeks or more - I do start to rather stereotypically long for a decent mug of tea, but I've never been homesick as such.

Lol I take teabags with me when in Asia for my trips. I need a decent cuppa

emmetgirl · 05/08/2024 21:52

I miss my cats does that count?

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 05/08/2024 23:13

@NewName24 @Gogogo12345

I take tea bags away with me too! And that's just to Europe (never been to Asia). We mostly go to apartments, unless it's a very short break, so I guess we recreate a lot of our home routines when we are away.

CoralBlush · 06/08/2024 09:49

No, I don’t get homesick.

I think I’m a very ‘in the moment’ person. I find new places exciting and really enjoy the experience of being someone different.

I’m equally at peace with going back home too though, I love where we live, so I don’t pine to be back on holiday once I’m home either.

It would be different if I was away without dh and our dcs. I would miss them very much. Being away without my kids and dh is the only thing that would make me feel homesick.

Pennydropping · 06/08/2024 17:50

Can’t even find tea where I am! 😭
…. 4 nights to go…. and when I’m home I’ll be booking only self catering / Air BnB style from then onwards!

Never sleeping in a hotel ever again

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 06/08/2024 20:39

Where is it you are staying @Pennydropping ?

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 06/08/2024 20:40

Do you not like the city / country you have visited or is it just the accommodation?

LlynTegid · 06/08/2024 20:40

I don't.

What I never been able to work out is the best time of day to arrive back home.

abracadabra1980 · 06/08/2024 20:49

I'm so attached to my home it's probably unhealthy. I hate visiting other people and I actually get that excited feeling when I'm on my way home-even after an odd evening out, or driving home from work.
I would rather be at home than anywhere else. I feel quite strange not having my pets around.

Well the city is a bit more grotty than I expected! And the hotel is a posh one but you can hear talking through the walls which is not ideal when you have jet lag 😭 we saved up for 3 years for this and the Hilton at Gatwick was better 😂
