We try and take a friendly tone here, even if we don’t share the same views. Thanks

My tone is no different to others on here. Discussing politics will rarely be very chummy and with 100% agreement. I stick to my personal code though - I don’t swear at people, no pure insults, actually consider what they say rather than knee jerk back, and admit if I’m wrong and have been corrected.

Many posters do feel the need to proclaim they’ve reported comments though, which I find mildly amusing.

bombastix · 04/08/2024 15:43

It’s fine to find certain things funny. But saying “posters like you” is rude.

Efacsen · 04/08/2024 15:43

Things have really deteriorated in Rotherham - and also Middlesbrough Sad

Apolloneuro · 04/08/2024 15:44

@Rainbowsponge please. There’s loads of other threads to scrap on. At a time when we’ve all been extremely upset by what happened in Southport (I’ve taught that age group for 30 years. I know them so well. My heart is aching,) we need a little place on here which isn’t arsey.

I don’t think it’s announcing rather than discussing what should be just left and what ought to be reported. It’s a discussion we’ve had a lot over the past week or so given how much the racism has ramped up and HQ have been letting some things stand which perhaps ought not to have done. There were some particular low points at the start of the week.

It won’t happen too often. We have some lurkers who like to use the report button.

ArmFromUll · 04/08/2024 15:46

And yet we manage the first without necessarily having the second all the time on this thread.

DrRiverSong · 04/08/2024 15:48

Many posters do feel the need to proclaim they’ve reported comments though, which I find mildly amusing.

I found that part a bit judgmental and still not really grasping the spirit of the thread. For many people here the post that are racist, inciting violence, and vulgar about recent events are offensive and deserve to be reported. Whether you would do the same or not, laughing at what are strong feelings for very valid reasons isn’t kind. You could read it more generously by assuming the posts reported were so heinous that they absolutely warranted it.

I hope you stay Rainbow and join in the chat and embrace the difference compared to either threads. Here’s a cat in encouragement.

Ms Patel appears to have lost her spoon.

absquatulize · 04/08/2024 15:50

BBC reporting that the bin fire in Rotherham has gone out, and the police have pushed back the rioters, moving them a small distance away from the hotel.

prettybird · 04/08/2024 15:51

@Rainbowsponge - no need for your snideness Hmm. I was responding to @mibbelucieachwell who asked "Could a kind poster explain what he said and what the comments about two-tier policing mean please?" Hence me referencing her right at the start of my post Confused

As it happens, it took me some time to post as I got interrupted by dh and in the interim others had also answered (making the same point).

In case you hadn't noticed, we do try to be helpful to each other on these particular threads.

However, we can and do choose to ignore bad faith posters, which I will now do too.

The goons have set fire to a holiday inn housing asylum seekers in Rotherham.

Hopefully that’s an attempted murder charge coming up.

IClaudine · 04/08/2024 15:55

Stop trying to pick fights @Rainbowsponge We often have a brief discussion about what's happening on other threads.

Re: the two tier policing thing, it's misinformation about the Manchester airport incident - claiming no one has been charged when they have. And the incident in Harehills is also being weaponries for the two tier stuff.

We know the subtext. The police let off black and brown people/minorities but come down hard on British born white people. It is offensive as well as incorrect. How many black and brown people have been killed by police died in custody or while getting arrested over the decades?

prettybird · 04/08/2024 15:55

For the record: I've not reported any posts on these threads. There were posts (now deleted) on other threads, the content of which I won't even repeat as they were so egregious, that definitely warranted reporting. It is exactly what MN has told us to do.

Not to do so is choosing to be complicit in allowing hate speech to be disseminated. I never say on those threads that I've reported a particular post, precisely because I don't want a round of applause.

BIWI · 04/08/2024 16:01

Glad to see that your post has been deleted @Rainbowsponge. And I think you need hastily review your personal code, because this:

Why do posters like you feel the need to announce you’re reporting everything? I can just imagine you standing back proudly and expecting a round of applause.

... was downright unpleasant as well as rude.

Well I just had a lovely scone as an afternoon snack. It was the last one from the freezer. Ah well.

I’ve just got back into baking and can’t seem to master the scone. They taste all right, but don’t rise. I need to keep practising.

DD is just back from a week's orchestra camp, so we are having a lazy day. She has finally fallen asleep having been up most of the night after their final concert yesterday.

Food consumption today has been mostly junk.

IClaudine · 04/08/2024 16:06

Paprika crisps anyone? I found them in the world foods aisle in Sainsbury's. They always remind me of being on holiday in France for some reason.

And 3Ds! Do you remember those little green bottles of almost negligible alcohol shandies? Can’t remember their name. My young teenage son thought he was the bees knees sitting at the tent, knocking those back.

Ah yes. Fond memories of French supermarkets on holiday as a kid. The crisps! The bon bons! Those strange biscuit sandwiches with a face.

In Holland we only used the have 2 flavours, paprika and natural.

When I went on an exchange student year in Germany, the English introduced us to salt and vinegar crisps and we offered them salty liquorice in exchange

I used to love buying Carambars for me the kids whenever we were in France. The jokes on the inside of the wrappers always threw us - partly because we couldn't always understand the French, and partly/often because they just weren't funny!

Apolloneuro · 04/08/2024 16:11

Are you Dutch, @DuncinToffee? Amsterdam is one of my favourite cities and the Van Gogh museum a very happy place for me.
