Any jewellery buffs?

My Nam passed away a few years ago and I was playing with my aunt's jewellery box this weekend (I'm nearly 49 but novelty has not worn off!) and I fell in love with this. It needs a good clean (weekend job!) but looks to be emeralds with tiny diamonds. I don't remember my Nan wearing it. My aunt said I could have it - it's not her style and there's no other girls in the family that would fight me for it!

It won't be worth a lot but I'd love to know more about what sort of decade it might be from.

Any jewellery buffs?

No idea but it's beautiful!

devildeepbluesea · 01/08/2024 19:04

Looks like art deco, it’s lovely. I’d those emeralds are real you may be pleasantly surprised as to value.

manonwelfling · 01/08/2024 19:06

Yes it's Art Deco in style but I would say 80s/90s.
Lovely though.

What a beautiful vintage piece.

Interesting.

Why would you say it's as late as that?

YourMumDressesYouFunny · 01/08/2024 19:07

Give it a good clean, it will really sparkle.
I thought it was marcasite at first, but zooming in it looks like tiny diamonds in a very dirty setting. I bet the emeralds are real too like pp says. It’s lovely.

JabbaTheBeachHut · 01/08/2024 19:09

Any high street jewellers will tell you if it's real or not.

BirthdayRainbow · 01/08/2024 19:09

I suspect it's worth more than you think. It's very unusual and no way is it as recent as 1980, 1990's.

ShrubRose · 01/08/2024 19:10

To me, it looks 30's.
I would get it appraised. Sotheby's and Christie's (and maybe some other auction houses) will do an estimate if they think it's something they might sell. You upload a photo to their website.
If you're near Belfast this Sunday, you could take it to the Antiques Roadshow!

Clueless2024 · 01/08/2024 19:11

Art deco looks like.

AdaColeman · 01/08/2024 19:13

From the style of the setting and the cut of the stones it looks as though it's probably from the 1930s.
If you look inside the band you will see the hallmarks. Have a look at them with a magnifying glass. They will tell you the date and place it was made, and who made it.
It's a lovely thing, enjoy wearing it!

manonwelfling · 01/08/2024 19:25

@JabbaTheBeachHut It's the setting, very popular then. The other thing that tells me it might not be very old is the size of the emeralds versus the tiny diamonds (melée, I think they are called). The emerald's cut. Purely my amateur opinion and I wouldn't be able to say if the emeralds are genuine or some semi-precious stone.
Can you take a pic of the hallmark @BlackBean2023 then we can reallyb have an idea.
Still a lovely ring I'd be very happy to wear.

Pebbles16 · 01/08/2024 19:26

Gorgeous and definitely has an art deco vibe. Hopefully original but, if not, it's a lovely repro.
Just wear and enjoy!

BoobyDazzler · 01/08/2024 19:33

I’d wear that, it’s gorgeous!

hby9628 · 01/08/2024 19:44

This is stunning

LuluBlakey1 · 01/08/2024 19:44

It looks Art Deco in style- emerald/synthetic emeralds and marcasite?

Does it have any hallmarks?

Art Deco jewellery was often set in platinum but I don't think this is platinum. The gold looking bits are very dulled. It needs a proper clean and looked at by someone with a bit of knowledge to know if it is treasure or just a nice treat to wear. I'd wear it!

Mama2many73 · 01/08/2024 19:50

After my nana died I was given a ring which I loved. I took it to a jeweller to have it cleaned properly. Didn't cost a lot and the jewellery told me it was just costume jewellery, no real diamonds, and that was fine because I loved the ring regardless!

manonwelfling · 01/08/2024 20:12

@LuluBlakey1 is right about the yellow gold - not Art Deco.

Gladtobeout · 01/08/2024 20:28

That's not emerald. Possibly turquoise depending on the lighting in the photo. At best, diamond chips surround. 1970s.

If you sold it as a piece of jewellery: £50 ish
Sold for materials: not worth it. Sentimental value will be much higher.

But your best bet is to check for hallmarks and take it to a professional to know for sure.

peesinapod · 01/08/2024 20:40

Emerald and diamond. Definitely not turquoise.
I think it's a reproduction art deco piece. Looks in good condition.
Clean and polish by a jeweller and you'll be good to go! Very pretty.

BirthdayRainbow · 01/08/2024 20:49

Please come back and tell us the result @BlackBean2023 as I'm dying to see that @Gladtobeout is totally wrong.

StopInhalingRevels · 01/08/2024 21:10

I personally think that's green glass, or paste. Because they're the most poorly cut and wonkily mounted real emeralds I've seen if they are indeed real. There's no sparkle at all, and they are clean enough to see how they've been cut, so they should be clean enough to have some gleam to them.

The chips around the edge I think are probably diamond.

No clue on value. £200-£450 is my guess range.

You need tickets for the Antiques Roadshow! I know this as I have 2 😊

Vettrianofan · 01/08/2024 21:17

£25-50 value. Beautiful 💍 I can see why you love it OP.

Petrine · 01/08/2024 21:28

If you look at the hallmarks hopefully you’ll be able to see when it was made. Go online to see lists of the date letters used.
