Any jewellery buffs?

My Nam passed away a few years ago and I was playing with my aunt's jewellery box this weekend (I'm nearly 49 but novelty has not worn off!) and I fell in love with this. It needs a good clean (weekend job!) but looks to be emeralds with tiny diamonds. I don't remember my Nan wearing it. My aunt said I could have it - it's not her style and there's no other girls in the family that would fight me for it!

It won't be worth a lot but I'd love to know more about what sort of decade it might be from.

Any jewellery buffs?

Sorry, got distracted by dinner!

I'll post a pic of it all cleaned up and pop into a jeweller over the weekend if I can. To be honest it could be worth £20 or £2000 and I'd not care; I genuinely love it Grin

Given your Nan didn't wear it presumably she kept it for sentimental reasons? Possibly a gift when she was young or something that belonged to her Mum. That would place it prewar, so I agree 1920s-30s.

It's definitely emeralds or paste not turquoise.

Loads of good larger jewellers will give you an indication of value. I only wear vintage jewellery though and vintage ruby and emerald rings from that period can be had for a few hundreds. That said the number if stones would make it more valuable.

I can't tell if it's real emerald or paste from the image. I agree a couple seem wonky set but that could be due to damage and a bodged repair.

Either way it's really pretty and since your Nan kept it there's probably some meaning to it too, a lovely thing to have to wear and enjoy.

It’s really not worth very much nor likely to be by a “name” designer or retailer. They just would not use such tiny diamonds. They could be emeralds but they are quite small. I don’t think it’s Art Deco either and I would not trouble a London auction house! Just clean it and wear it.

Love that, it’s gorgeous. Please come back with a pic of it cleaned up and let us know the value. Enjoy wearing it.

Rhaidimiddim · 01/08/2024 21:45

I agree, Art Deco. Can you get a pic of the hallmarks? That will give you a firm date.

Blingismything · 01/08/2024 21:47

Yes I agree '80s in an Art Deco style. If you are able to read the hallmark you can research it easily.

TizerorFizz · 01/08/2024 21:54

I think more likely 60s. It’s a style of buckle ring.

You need tickets for the Antiques Roadshow! I know this as I have 2 😊

Have fun! 😀

It’s lovely, OP.

Please come back and tell us the result @BlackBean2023 as I'm dying to see that @Gladtobeout is totally wrong.

You're dying to see I'm wrong? Why? Your comment is completely unnecessary other than to be malicious.

I think it was an attempt at facetiousness @Gladtobeout, seeing you are 'wrong' in the sense that the ring would be worth a lot of money for OP.

Clarouts · 02/08/2024 08:55

How lovely! Emeralds are notoriously soft stones so I’d say the appearance of wear around the edges of each one would indicate that they are emerald.. clean it, wear it and enjoy it!

TizerorFizz · 02/08/2024 09:13

@Clarouts On the MOHS scale, emeralds are 7.5-8. Diamonds are 10. So no, they are not notoriously soft and are suitable for every day wear. Amethysts are 7. What this means if they might scratch or scuff a tiny bit. I suspect this ring has been worn and it’s just got wear and tear.

ViciousCurrentBun · 02/08/2024 09:14

It is art deco style but could be reproduction but even if art deco it will still be worth very little though obviously that is not the reason you have posted the pic. Enjoy wearing your ring but as well as getting it cleaned get the stone settings checked I would imagine you would find it very upsetting to lose one if a setting needs attention.

TizerorFizz · 02/08/2024 09:29

Lots of “buckle” style rings were 50s and 60s. Late art deco and into 40s maybe but it’s not a ring with an obvious date.

Not at all malicious. I'm hoping for @BlackBean2023 that it's worth a fortune then she has some security should she need it. I know she loves it whatever the value but it's nice to know.

No, not trying to be facetious either. Just genuinely wanting @BlackBean2023 to have a bonus. I appreciate you posting though @manonwelfling even if not quite what I meant 💐

Oh right, ok, I stand corrected. Thank you.
