My partner has surprised me with a night away tonight.
I was so excited but then he tells me it's in the city close to us (30 min train ride away )
I thought he might of booked somewhere a bit further afield.
We are leaving at one
He's booked us for a brunch and then out tonight at 8 for a meal at a nice restaurant.
The hotel looks nice
I just thought it would be somewhere else
I'm trying to get excited but it's a bit meh now

Am I being ungrateful?

30 miles from me is Bath (lovely!), Bournemouth (ditto!) or Basingstoke (not so much) so a lot depends on where, I guess, and the thought is important

I can assure you that a Basingstoke hotel with the right partner can be awesome. ;-)

I did prefer living in Bournemouth to Basingstoke though.

Probably if he’d gone further away you’d complain about the long travelling time. Seriously it sounds like he’s done something nice.

YABVV Ungrateful. sorry!

Dinoswearunderpants · 31/07/2024 13:37

Completely ungrateful! It's one night, why would you want to waste time travelling further?

TinkerTiger · 31/07/2024 14:05

Sounds like it's just a getaway to relax, eat and spend quality time in bed, not sightsee. So really doesn't matter where it is.

We go once or twice a year to a hotel that is just a 15 minute drive down the road - it's so close that DH popped home on one occasion when he forgot his phone charger!

It might be near but it's a lovely break - spa with drinks, dinner, lovely room and breakfast. It feels like a real treat.

Yes you are - go have fun!!

My partner and I live separately, both have kids. When we get the chance to spend a weekend together we often book a hotel in the nearest city because just being away from the domestic front is hugely freeing. If he booked Edinburgh or Liverpool you'd spend a lot of time travelling. Newcastle has great bars and restaurants.

I live in Newcastle. The city is full of weekend travellers and its a very popular destination for short breaks. Theres loaaaads of things to do here and some fantastic restaurants. The city has lots of historic points too. We often go to Durham for days and nights... It's 8 minutes on the train. Does Me

Yes, it’s ungrateful,

You are doing something?

What’s the mileage cut off for it to be acceptable, to you?

wtfissummer · 31/07/2024 16:49

Incredibly ungrateful

Yes you're being ungrateful and sound a little spoilt.

This doesn't make you sound any less ungrateful, tbh. But, I mean, tell him the location is more important than his company. See how many things he plans after that.
