My partner has surprised me with a night away tonight.
I was so excited but then he tells me it's in the city close to us (30 min train ride away )
I thought he might of booked somewhere a bit further afield.
We are leaving at one
He's booked us for a brunch and then out tonight at 8 for a meal at a nice restaurant.
The hotel looks nice
I just thought it would be somewhere else
I'm trying to get excited but it's a bit meh now

Am I being ungrateful?

Depends. Pre kids I'd probably have been bleh. Post kids I'd bite his hand off.

Werweisswohin · 31/07/2024 12:10

Yep, from what you've told us you are being ungrateful OP.

MiddleAgedDread · 31/07/2024 12:25

The only part of that which is unreasonable is having brunch at 1pm!!
Suck it up buttercup.

Mrsjayy · 31/07/2024 12:28

Oh just embrace it, 30 minutes away on the train means there isn't much faffing with travel you get a nice night away,

It's a win/win imo

pictoosh · 31/07/2024 12:34

Honestly I'd be disappointed by his lack of inspiration. I like a man who has the enthusiasm and imagination to think of something new.
Won't be a popular opinion I see...but it's the one I have.

I think you are being ungrateful, sorry .

Yes. OP, you are being super ungrateful. Is there some kind of backstory you're going to drip feed? Are you always so begrudging and princessy?

30 miles from me is Bath (lovely!), Bournemouth (ditto!) or Basingstoke (not so much) so a lot depends on where, I guess, and the thought is important.

A thought... do you actually like your husband?

ThisBlueCrab · 31/07/2024 12:38

Sorry but I agree with the majority, you are being very ungrateful.

HawkersEast · 31/07/2024 12:43

Yep, ungrateful!

Anonym00se · 31/07/2024 12:45

Sometimes we have a night ‘away’ in the actual city where we live. A nice meal and night in a hotel is a lovely treat.

Mrsjayy · 31/07/2024 12:48

Where would you have liked to have gone?

CleanShirt · 31/07/2024 12:49

You are 100% ungrateful.

TheFlis · 31/07/2024 12:55

Be glad you’re not having to travel for ages on a boiling hot day!

Olika · 31/07/2024 12:57

Yes you are ungrateful. Next year maybe give idea of places you prefer.

MonsteraMama · 31/07/2024 12:59

Yep sorry very ungrateful.

I've had some wonderful nights away in the city that's only 20 mins up the road from me, and some shit nights out in cities thousands of miles away. Why does proximity to your house mean it's less exciting?

IvyCardamom · 31/07/2024 13:01

Some people would be overjoyed at this thoughtfulness. Maybe you'll go somewhere further another time, but for now, don't look a gift horse in the mouth, just enjoy the heck out of it. It's still a treat & change of scenery. There are often great places to visit on our doorstep that we overlook & the bonus is less traveling, more relaxing & having fun.

Strictlymad · 31/07/2024 13:06

he sounds like he’s been really thoughtful and gone to trouble and expense to do this nice thing. Yes you are being ungrateful!

dothehokeycokey · 31/07/2024 13:10

Restinggoddess · 31/07/2024 13:13

Many posters on here would love their other half to at least make this effort
Enjoy
and book one to surprise him with next time

UrbanFan · 31/07/2024 13:14

yes very

Willyoushutthefrontdoor · 31/07/2024 13:17

Weve stayed in hotels for no reason other than it was a cheap offer and we fancied some proper down time...we have stayed in numerous hotels in the city which is a 15m public bus ride away. Nice meal some drinks and time alone. I'd be well impressed had my DH booked us a brunch, evening meal AND an overnight stay in such a lovely city close by. You sound massively ungrateful to me

FinallyHere · 31/07/2024 13:20

What are you making it mean that he has chosen a spot to minimise travel time.

It sounds perfect to me, but it must seem something different to you, so. Have a think about what is killing your pleasure.

Then do something about that. Good luck, hope it does turn out you are just a big ungrateful rather than there being some massive back story.

SeeSeeRider · 31/07/2024 13:24

TheFlis · 31/07/2024 12:55

I can go 30 miles in an air conditioned train to some lovely places, some by the sea. I suppose I'm lucky.

Lovelynames123 · 31/07/2024 13:25

I live 4 miles from a vibrant city centre, I often have a night in town with a hotel as a treat, the dc call it a mini holiday! You are definitely being ungrateful!

AGodawfulsmallaffair · 31/07/2024 13:26

Bet you’re hard work on your birthday.
