The best instant coffee?

I drink my coffee black and have never been a huge fan of instant coffee. I normally grind my own beans and use a french press. I feel like you can really notice the difference in quality when there's no milk in the drink.

However, I have high cholesterol and am trying to reduce it through diet and lifestyle changes in the first instance before I get my levels re-tested.

My doctor suggested I swap to instant coffee as there is some research to suggest that oils in freshly ground coffee, especially in a french press can raise blood cholesterol. Well, I'm absolutely gutted 🤣. But I'm trying to do everything I can until I can see if it's had any impact.

So in the interest of experimenting I'm going to buy a few different jars of instant coffee and do a taste test. Which brands do you like? We have pretty much every major supermarket within a 30 minute trip so I'm happy to be recommended anything!

It does appear that there's some research about coffee straight from beans raising cholesterol. Although interestingly a PP has flagged it is not an issue if the coffee is filtered through paper.

I'm doing plenty of other things to help too. Less saturated fat, more fibre, omega 3 and sage supplements etc etc. Whether any of this has an affect remains to be seen!

Porridge oats daily is where its at. You'll see it bring your cholesterol down quickly. I eat porridge daily, have done for years. Porridge is a medicine all on its own. Superfood.

I eat blueberries daily with the porridge oats 😋 my cholesterol has never been high.
As for the topic at hand, Lidl and Aldi do a great selection of instant coffees.

The tins of the better instant coffee like Azera have ground coffee added so may not be suitable either. Nescafe Alta Rica which is an instant coffee is quite nice

Don't do it IO.

Reduce the amount of coffee you drink not the type.

An aero press uses a paper filter and makes the best coffee - in my opinion. There is no instant coffee that comes close. If I drink it I have to persuade myself it's a completely different drink.

Interestingly my brother recommended one from Lidl, could be the same one perhaps.

Lots of votes for Azera!

Another vote for the Lidl Azeera rip-off. In fact I’m drinking it right now!

@GameOfJones cutting out sugar will help you much more than the coffee. Sugar consumption has been linked to high cholesterol. If you have a sweet tooth, work on converting the cookie and chocolate cravings to lower sugar fruit like berries.

I love proper coffee and have one bean to cup coffee every morning and then drink decaf instant the rest of the day at work. Reason I do this is because I'm a poor sleeper so cutting caffeine helps but this may help your cholesterol too? I have 2 bean to cup coffees on weekend mornings as a treat Smile The best decaf instant coffee is M&S, the one in a tin. It's so good.

Cafe Direct - Machu Picchu - the tastiest instant coffee. The decaf is tasty too.

Yes this one. I have my coffee black too.

So off the back off this thread I have tried the Lidl Deluxe Colombian instant and the Clipper instant. Both reasonable, I think the Clipper one just edges it for me but is twice the price of the Lidl one.

I shall try some others soon and report back!

I hate instant but was at an event recently where free cups of truestart were given away it was so much nicer than the week filter officially on offer. Over the few days of the event got chatting to the staff and liked their story and woman gave me loads of free samples which will be great for taking on holidays.
