The best instant coffee?

GameOfJones · 28/07/2024 17:53

I drink my coffee black and have never been a huge fan of instant coffee. I normally grind my own beans and use a french press. I feel like you can really notice the difference in quality when there's no milk in the drink.

However, I have high cholesterol and am trying to reduce it through diet and lifestyle changes in the first instance before I get my levels re-tested.

My doctor suggested I swap to instant coffee as there is some research to suggest that oils in freshly ground coffee, especially in a french press can raise blood cholesterol. Well, I'm absolutely gutted 🤣. But I'm trying to do everything I can until I can see if it's had any impact.

So in the interest of experimenting I'm going to buy a few different jars of instant coffee and do a taste test. Which brands do you like? We have pretty much every major supermarket within a 30 minute trip so I'm happy to be recommended anything!

Nescafe azera americano

There is also an intense one which I'm sure would be good I've just never had it.

Perhaps an Illy one would be good too

Yozzer87 · 28/07/2024 18:03

I buy the Aldi and Lidl own brand in the round silver container. I find it's exactly like Azera but a lot cheaper.

Another vote for Azera Intense or Americano here.

L’Or is the best I’ve tried by far.

Another vote for Nescafé Americano

Yet another Azera americano fan
It's always on offer somewhere so I stock up then.

devildeepbluesea · 28/07/2024 18:18

I love the Lidl Colombian instant in a jar.

Tusktusk · 28/07/2024 18:20

Place marking as I’d also like to find an acceptable instant coffee so I can have it at work - grinding beans and French pressing are just too faffy for work!

BigPussyEnergy · 28/07/2024 18:21

Honestly fuck that shit!! The oil in coffee must be absolutely minimal. I’d rather find another way to reduce cholesterol than swap good coffee for instant.

Ginkypig · 28/07/2024 18:22

I make up a mix as I don’t like one single one on its own. They stopped doing one I liked ages ago and I couldn’t find a replacement so iv made my own!
i make up a mix (about a third of each) in a separate jar and just redo it when it’s empty.

my three that I mix are

Lo’r intense (the purple jar)
dowe Egberts pure indulgence (the black jar)
Nescafé gold dark blend roastery collection dark roast (black tin)

I buy them when they are on offer so I have a few in then repeat it when the others are on offer so I’m not running out all at once and buying multiple coffees at once 😳

OooohAhhhh · 28/07/2024 18:28

I love the Nescafé Alta Rica - it's a purple coloured label. It's strength intensity is 8 so it's strong which is what I like about it.

Interestingly my brother recommended one from Lidl, could be the same one perhaps.

Lots of votes for Azera!

This made me laugh! I entirely get the sentiment but am willing to give anything a go! I do drink a lot of coffee so maybe keeping the french press for a weekend treat?

Dowe Egberts is the most drinkable. But it's not as nice as proper coffee.
I've been having flaxseed as a a way to counter cholesterol, I don't know if it's worked, but recommended by Michael Moseley, so am hoping it does.

Aroastdinnerisnotahumanright · 28/07/2024 18:39

I've never heard that, you might want to get a second opinion.

I do drink instant however (decaf, sorry) and the lidl version of azera is the best.

This 😂😂😂

I’d just cut down to one or 2 cups (not mugs) per day and savour it.

ZanzibarIsland · 28/07/2024 18:44

Azera. Or paper filters are supposed to filter out the oils.
Or fuck that shit etc

VivelaFrance · 28/07/2024 18:57

I have bean to cup at home, Aldi or Lidl in the office.

Google coffee/cholesterol or coffee and diterpenes, it’s worth reading the paper that comes up from the British Medical Journal. It is to do with the diterpenes in unfiltered coffee, which increase cholesterol.

longshots · 28/07/2024 19:19

Gold blend Espresso has the edge on Azera in my view but they're very similar.

Wiglio · 28/07/2024 19:26

OP
id look at the British Heart Foundation for good advice on cholesterol reduction
ive not heard about ground coffee increasing serum cholesterol the BHF should be able to advise you

SanFranBear · 28/07/2024 19:29

I have the Lidl freeze-dried Americano one (with the orange lid) as I refuse to give Nestle and of my money... ever! They are an evil company so if ethical shopping is important to you, I would steer well clear of Azera!

pizzaHeart · 28/07/2024 21:31

Another vote for L’Or. I like both their caf and decaf, didn’t like Azera much, haven’t tried the Lidl one.
