I think he would be a weak leader. So maybe the Labour and Lib Dem choice for Tory leader.

Surely Priti Patel would be the Labour/Lib Dem choice, why would any Tory MP take her seriously if they wanted to rebel, given her history?

VimtoVimto · 28/07/2024 18:26

I assume Mel Stride thinks if he has to do the media rounds defending the Tory leadership position he may as well defend his own decisions as leader.

Priti Patel always reminds me of Steve Wrights ‘Serious Jockin’ slot on his radio show.

I can’t decide whether it will be more interesting to hear Badenoch try to argue with Sir Keir, as he strikes me as pretty calm or to see how many ‘g’s Patel misses off in her speeches.

Apolloneuro · 28/07/2024 18:54

Stride has been an unremarkable MP, although a cabinet member and will sell himself as a moderate, elder statesman, I think. I can see that he could appeal to the party members.

Apolloneuro · 28/07/2024 18:57

Although how anyone would vote for someone who came within a handful of votes to losing his seat, goodness knows.

Apparently there was a very strong Labour candidate, but for some reason he was deselected.

TheABC · 28/07/2024 19:38

Cat tax paid.

No comment on the Tory candidates; it's a depressing choice that I am glad not to make. However, it took Starmer 5 years and a lot of discipline to turn around Labour's fortunes. Whoever gets in as the Conservative minister will need the same.

I'm expecting Rachel Reeves to raise taxes in the autumn. Our infrastructure is decaying, there are public service pay rises to accommodate and several scandals to pay off. That's before we sort out defence, recruit more teachers and GPs and nationalise the railways.

It's a mess. Is there anything the Tories left in decent shape?

I imagine Mrs Sunak saw that off some time ago. It must have been beyond vulgar.

True, or Mrs Hunt as I think it was No11

RobinStrike · 28/07/2024 21:26

Hunt said that it was peeling off and that Liz Truss had painted over it. But then it was reported it was a joke. So who knows. It does sound like it's probably been removed.

BIossomtoes · 28/07/2024 21:33

Badenoch’s thrown her hat in the ring.

Evenstar · 28/07/2024 21:33

This is good news, seems she probably didn’t have enough backers

Her former backers will be supporting Jenrick I suppose.

Oh but she absolutely definitely did have enough backers. She said so to the BBC apparently, so it must be true. She just can't stand because people won't listen to her.

Badenoch - how can she be favourite? She could start an argument in an empty room.

ilovesooty · 28/07/2024 22:27

Under Badenoch the Conservatives "will speak the truth again". Is she admitting they've been lying for years then? 🙄

She's hilarious isn't she.

How someone who was in government can say the Conservative Party need to focus on "doing some things well, not everything badly" is beyond me.

I hope she gets spanked. But if not, I will look forward to seeing KS make mincemeat of her at PMQs. Blinking and all.

The 44-year-old, seen as a front runner to replace Rishi Sunak, promises to "renew" the Tory party.

What's going on? People are trying to fob us off with pics of particularly obnoxious Tories in the guise of tax credits? Not on. Bring back the cats and other loveliness please.

L1ttledrummergirl · 28/07/2024 23:06

I feel a bit sorry for tory party members if this is the best they have. It's a desperate lot.

Surely there must be a better option? I mean at least with any of these there's little chance of the Tories getting back into power, but you would think they could find someone who would be a fresh start.

This is a picture of big cat on election night. He sat up and purred approvingly during Keir Starmer's speech at the count then flaked out as in the picture. He woke up again to purr at Starmer's victory speech 🤣

A surprising level of self awareness that she and her party had done everything badly for years.

Although perhaps a little unfair, because they were very good at enriching their mates at our expense.
