Tbh the GP thing is exactly what people keep telling teachers to do rather than strike. It's not hard ball, it's also not soft ball. So it almost certainly won't work.

DuncinToffee · 01/08/2024 12:33

The Bank of England cuts UK interest rates by 0.25%, taking them down to 5.25%, after the Monetary Policy Committee voted 5-4 for the cut.

In some ways the riots, while awful and horrendous, may be helpful in the longer term. It gives our government tangible examples of the extremism that is happening. You can legislate against and tackle by education a tangible threat.

It’s also something that everyone has seen. not hidden in WhatsApp groups and online chat rooms . The hatred has been released in public and I think it will galvanise a very large number of people in this country into a “that’s not the British way” type attitude.

As a nation we have a pretty firm grasp of what is decent. When people go against it we have a pretty good handle on fighting it off. We’ve been through this sort of anger before and not let it fundamentally change us. We can do it again.

And a judge has allowed the 17 old charged with the Southport stabbings to be named

I fear for his family. I hope they have protection. The only good thing that can come is s guilty plea. The trial will generate a huge amount of anger, and the facts that come will be twisted and manipulated to suit very divisive agendas. We have seen it already.

It would also help if GP appointments were reserved for people who are actually ill. My surgery keeps offering me age related checks for all sorts of conditions, I’d happily trade those for being able to get an appointment when I need it. I’m assuming there’s a financial incentive attached to those checks so it would be good if that was removed.

But preventive health is as important as dealing with those who are ill - because it's designed to identify/diagnose conditions early so that they don't become more serious in later life.

DH went to his 65+ assessment recently - much to my surprise because he never goes to the GP even when he's ill! - and was diagnosed with a serious Vitamin B12 deficiency. Untreated this could have led to all manner of serious conditions, even death. So a short course of injections, and all is well now.

Edited

It will not be good for his family, but will save others being suggested.

The GP is not always the person you see at a surgery in any case.

Green light for all the fucking Marples to get stuck in 🙄

I don’t want to remember his name beyond the next 5 mins tbh. He doesn’t deserve it. In good time, if a motivation or contributory circumstances come to light then I hope that will help prevent further atrocities like this happening. But him now, he’s a lost cause afaic.

DuncinToffee · 01/08/2024 13:01

It's not going to stop the idiots either, the first replies on the tweet I read the announcement on were about his surname Hmm

You do wonder where these idiots actually live, don’t you? Especially as they are always banging on about how are eyewitnesses to “multiculturalism not working” . It’s not a surname that would stand out at DS’s old secondary school and that’s not in an area that could be called particularly diverse.
Schrodinger’s Racist - simultaneously besieged by Foreign Hordes on their doorstep whilst also being incapable of pronouncing a surname that isn’t Smith.

DuncinToffee · 01/08/2024 13:37

It wouldn't stand out at my children's old school either and we live in what could be called a white town, the wider area is more diverse.

Just seen on l all news that a riot that was luckily stopped in its tracks last night near me was at a hotel used by the HO to house asylum seekers.

A note has been left outside in which it said "stop the boats. Stop the stabbings".

People really are short sighted bigots. They will only see and hear what they want. Hence why the surname is causing so much issue.

It caused issue for my British ds in secondary school too (his is partly Spanish). He was told numerous times to "go back to where he was born". But he's white British - so just told to ignore it. That just emboldens the perpetrators Sad

L1ttledrummergirl · 01/08/2024 13:48

When I worked in a gp practice 8 years ago, we had two "part time" gps if you call 40 hours a week part time. They were salaried for their 2.5 days worth of hours, and worked out that after all the unpaid hours needed to do the job, they earned £15 an hour.

They no longer work there.

The senior partner worked 60+ hours a week which is not sustainable.

The misinformation has got to stop, glad to see the Russian link being called out by the media

I know a family with children who are half Chinese heritage, just after the Brexit vote they had other children making gestures at their eyes and telling them they could go home 😔 They were only 7 years old and had a British mother and an American father. Brexit is like a poison, it has emboldened the kind of behaviour we have seen on the streets in the last few days.

Jason118 · 01/08/2024 14:09

I was feeling a bit down about it all - then I watched the Twitter video again, feeling much better!

IClaudine · 01/08/2024 14:24

Please make it stop. The suspect has been named and the racists are out again on MN. I just want to cry tbh.

Evenstar · 01/08/2024 14:28

@IClaudine stay on here for a bit, I know it is tempting to call them out, but I imagine that there are too many of them for the decent people to counter it 😔

Thanks. I am worried the thugs are going to turn in up in Cardiff now (I live in South Wales).

We went Cardiff when the kids were little to visit the Dr Who exhibition, they didn't want to go near the Daleks Grin

I am in North West England and see there are already fears about demonstrations in Liverpool and Blackpool this weekend. We sometimes go to Southport for a day out and wish we could go and offer a little support by using local businesses, for a meal out etc when things are calmer again, but who knows when it will be.

The local businesses there have shown amazing support to their community and must be suffering financially.

Piggywaspushed · 01/08/2024 14:51

This is a bit rich coming from me but if we ignore the threads they will fizzle out.

Us teachers were very bad at doing this during Covid Heights and I was also sucked into anti vaxx threads. But some never get off the ground and they are the ones that don't ever get into active.

Maybe we could get the Daleks out in case of thugs turning up!

@Evenstar I guess police forces all over the country will be on high alert now for a few days.

Saucery · 01/08/2024 14:52

Me too, @Evenstar. I’m on tenterhooks waiting for my nearest city to see the EDL storm in on some pretext. It was lovely and calm yesterday but I don’t think I’ll risk it this weekend. Which annoys me intensely because that’s the aim of terrorists, which they are.
