Best baked beans?

ODFOx · 25/07/2024 21:59

What are the best beans for me?
Heinz beans are too sweet for us.
I usually buy Tesco reduced salt and sugar and add a tablespoon of tomato purée.
We tried some organic beans from Norway but didn't like the lumps of tomato.
Recommendations please. High bean to sauce ratio, lots of tomato flavour, more savoury than sweet.
Thank you!!

I always thought Branstons were only my secret.
Lovely, fruity, and rich.

I loved Heinz reduced salt and sugar ones from years ago when all they did was what it said on the tin, ie., reduced the salt and sugar. They were great. Then they fucked them over by adding that revolting stevia so couldn’t eat those any more as they were disgustingly sweet. Note to manufacturers: not everyone likes sweeteners.

I discovered Heinz five beans by mistake and they taste much like the baked beans of yore and no sweeteners. So they now get my vote.

I get the cheap beans from Lidl and Aldi. About 28p a tin and just as good as more expensive ones. I refuse to spend £1.80 on a tin of Heinz.

TheDogsMother · 26/07/2024 07:11

For some reason Heinz were in short supply a few years ago so we tried Branston beans. They are the absolute best, hands down.

Offforatwix · 26/07/2024 07:12

We've gone to various organic brands because of the upf and they're like sadness in a tin.

I'd never thought my guilty pleasure would be snaffling some branston beans when the DC are out so they can't see me glory in the emulsifier, artificial colouring and whatever else goodness.

Had Branston ever since a child.. still have them now and I've tried other brands.
Suppose you have to try different brands to suit your taste.

Ha ha that makes me feel old, I remember when they were launched around 15 years ago 😂😂😂

BCBird · 26/07/2024 07:37

Asda beans. I stopped buying reduced calorie beans a whole ago. I don't like Heinz. M and S not as nice as Asda IMO

ScarlettSunset · 26/07/2024 07:41

I'm another Branstons fan.

I did just like the Tesco own brand ones for years but they seemed to change recently and I didn't like them anymore, so I switched despite the price difference.

mitogoshi · 26/07/2024 07:56

My homemade ones Grin. You'll never want canned again once you start making them, they freeze well

greengreyblue · 26/07/2024 08:00

Aldi. Never had a reason not to buy them. They also won a TV taste test against Heinz.

Grannyinnwaiting · 26/07/2024 08:01

I thought I was the only Branson fan

Enough4me · 26/07/2024 08:03

Branston.
Grate some extra mature cheddar in before cooking to thicken the sauce and stir until melted to create 'cheesy beans' - ideal on a jacket potato.

Isthiscorrect · 26/07/2024 08:25

@llamajohn Branston beans started in 2005! Time passes quickly when you're enjoying beans.

DatingDinosaur · 26/07/2024 08:44

Branston for me too. They taste like Heinz did before Heinz took all the salt and sugar out of their beans to make them more healthy and tasteless.

Asda smart price are good too, taste-wise, but there's less beans/more sauce in those.

LadyChilli · 25/07/2024 22:06

Branstons. A wonderful surprise after all those years eating Heinz. Aldi own brand are also good.

Yes Branston are my favourite I like Tesco own though but not reduced just ordinary.

MWNA · 26/07/2024 12:04

Branston definitely.

Tarkan · 26/07/2024 12:06

M&S here for us but we don't have an M&S in town so if I'm buying locally we use Branstons.

Serencwtch · 26/07/2024 12:12

We like Mr Organic beans from Waitrose.

NotAlexa · 26/07/2024 12:12

Mixed beans bought for 40p in Lidl or Asda and baked at home yourself. 5 minutes in a microwave if really don't have time.

RaraRachael · 26/07/2024 12:25

Not a massive bb fan but Lidl are very good and a fraction of Heinz cost

Twicethethinker · 26/07/2024 12:30

Asda ones are the nicest, been buying them for a while after trying all the other home brands and not liking them. Better than Heinz too.

toewoe · 26/07/2024 12:31

Branston!! Lovely thick rich sauce Heinz are meh in comparison

Funderthighs · 26/07/2024 12:35

Another Branston fan here. They’re delicious 😋

Another2Cats · 26/07/2024 13:00

Branston here as well, but Aldi are just as good as Branston I find.

Also, a lot cheaper. At my local Tesco, Branston are £1.15 a tin whereas Aldi is 42p, just over a third of the price.
