I've lost the hamster

DS got a fairly new hamster, loves it of course. Long story but he managed to get out and has disappeared in a tiny hole next to the toilet in DDs en-suite upstairs. Everyone is devastated of course, I could hear a bit of scrabbling in the floorboards when I was downstairs but it's stopped. Have laid some treats, food and a home made humane trap in the bathroom in the hope thy he will reappear. Have I got any hope at all here? This was only about an hour ago - could he come back or can they not find their way out? Any other tips for finding an escapee? So gutted about this

This happened to us. Found three days later behind the toilet

HillBillieEilish · 24/07/2024 21:48

Can you buy one that looks exactly the same? Are your electrics going to be ok?

Huifen · 24/07/2024 21:51

I can replace him if I have to, I'm just really hoping this one will show up although my hopes are low

Remember hamsters are nocturnal.. You need a stake out tonight.. . In the dark.
Bet Hammy is home before the week end. Unless you fall asleep.

SkaneTos · 24/07/2024 21:53

I think the hamster might come back out eventually. Did it happen an hour ago? Have some patience. Good idea to put out food.

Sisterdeloris · 24/07/2024 21:53

Wont it come back out for food? Unless there is another exit somewhere? It'll aim for light I imagine - thats what rats do. It's not just going to perish in there unless stuck. You want to hope not anyway cos it would stink.

ZZGirl · 24/07/2024 21:54

There is hope! Disappeared into a fireplace once, took 3 hours but she came out with a rather dusty nose.

Huifen · 24/07/2024 21:54

Yeah just an hour or so ago. I've made a bucket trap thing courtesy of google, left some food out including a bit of peanut butter. I could hear scrabbling not that long ago but now I can't. Just worried the poor little mite will never be able to find a way out, or if he does then it won't be where I expect !!

Oh no. Personally we'd be lifting the floorboards if they didnt come out quickly. Poor little thing. Plz dont give up on it - imagine starving to death, must be a horrible way to go.

Huifen · 24/07/2024 21:55

I like to think if he can get in he can get back out but what do I know ..

GoodVibesHere · 24/07/2024 21:58

Might you be able to lift a floorboard to rescue him?

Huifen · 24/07/2024 21:59

I've turned the light off in her bathroom as he's nocturnal but should I leave it on to give him something to aim for?

If it can get in it can get out. Leave the light on in the en suite permanently with the door shut. It should find its way out unless its long gone. I doubt it'll just sit down and die. It'll want to find a way back out.

I don't know how to do this and typically DH is away for work until Saturday

Just opened the door of the en-suite and he was in there!! But ran straight back off! So at least I know he can get out ...just to catch him now argh

Well that’s promising . We lost a rat once and she had gone behind the kickboards in the kitchen , easier to catch than a hamster though as they like people .

MrsCarson · 24/07/2024 22:05

It took me nearly two weeks to catch my little escapee, I thought maybe the cat had dispatched him, but he was living inside the couch, probably on breadcrumbs. I ripped the fabric off the underside and got him.

CuteCillian · 24/07/2024 22:05

Great news! Ours stayed behind the piano for 12 hours once.

Sisterdeloris · 24/07/2024 22:05

The little bar steward! It might like its new home under the bathroom floor. You'll need to persevere with a trap and catch him for good.

LizzieBennett73 · 24/07/2024 22:06

DD lost her hamster once, she'd climbed up inside the curtains and was happily eating through the interlining Hmm took us days to realise where she was....

LilyJessie · 24/07/2024 22:06

Omg hamsters are a nightmare for this!!
Mine ran away loads!
Hammy should come back. They love peanut butter on a cracker!

Huifen · 24/07/2024 22:06

Luckily there's no cat to complicate anything. Long night ahead ...

L1ttledrummergirl · 24/07/2024 22:06

Try putting the cage in there as well with the door open. A few times when we've mislaid a hamster we've woken up the next morning to find them curled back up in their bed.

Sunshineafterthehail · 24/07/2024 22:08

Ensuite with a bath? U need sit in there and drop a plastic box over him from above!!

Willyoushutthefrontdoor · 24/07/2024 22:11

Sorry. I am.not much help except to say keep trying to lure and hopefully he will pop up. humane trap sounds good. Hope it's there in the morning.
in the late 60s before I was born my 4 brothers and sisters had a rat called Ruby. One day when he got in from work mam said to dad... the bloody cat has ate the rat. My dad said...it has not.... Its on the top deck of the number 63!. Soooo he got on the bus to go to work and a woman started screaming...Ruby had got into his haversack that morning and then escaped mid journey!. He had to go out and buy a replacement and none of the kids noticed.
