Reposted from Preteens due to lack of traction.
I'm a teacher. We finished up for summer on Friday and I let the students draw on the whiteboard. Two ten year old students kept drawing this symbol, can someone explain the meaning?

Looks to me like someone has taken one symbol and tweaked it a bit.

Don't worry, just rub it out. What's your concern?Find something better for them to do next end of term.

Just wanted to make sure it wasn't inappropriate

My DD12 is a Furry/Therian - there's nothing sexual or perverted about it at all. She likes to wear a tail, paws and ears and she likes to do quadrobics

Nothing to report as it's nothing untoward

Fair enough, I haven't got a clue how it works but they're not doing any harm so kids will be kids 🤷‍♀️

???
what is the matter with the word traction? It means the same thing and is a commonplace word.

This is a strange thing to post. I know we live in a world of snowflakes and people get offended at the slightest thing but Polysyllabic Vocabulary Police is a new one on me.

I think you’ll find you mean “long words police” 😁

No it's not. All fine.

😃Very good.

On reflection I think I actually meant the Polysyllabic Vocabulary Constabulary.

MeouwCat · 23/07/2024 22:52

Alcoholics anonymous? Or one of its spin off groups? Maybe a family member has joined AA.

MeouwCat · 23/07/2024 22:56

Alateen; a support group for young family members of AA members. Thats my guess

MyBrownEyedHandsomeBoy · 23/07/2024 23:00

Wait.. what!?

I just googled a therian for the first time in my life..

What the fuckerty fuck?!

Yappucino · 23/07/2024 23:32

Coincidentally enough my daughter told me she was a Therian earlier today. Anyone know where they're getting it from? My kid's not on social media.

WandsOut · 23/07/2024 23:49

They are getting it from social media - look them up on TikTok - it's not completely harmless, quadrobics can seriously injure kids who are mimicking it online and googling them will also quickly lead in to some of the more pervy stuff if the kids don't have devices that have adult content filters on. Just be sensible about it.

PenelopeHofstadter · 23/07/2024 15:35

'Lack of traction'🙄

Why not just say 'lack of views/replies'?

It's not a vocabulary exam

So why criticise the OP's vocabulary then?

Yellowcakestand · 23/07/2024 23:53

I would definitely discourage any kid from entering the 'Furdom'. In my opinion it's not a safe place. (From experience of a family member)

💯 I think a lot of people don't realise how quickly the images and videos that these kids are searching for become quite vile. It's not just dressing up.

I still find it bizarre but they seem happy enjoying their childhood and actually playing instead of trying to act older

HotCrossBunplease · 24/07/2024 00:25

Oh, oh, I have now ventured down a “what is Therian quadrobics” rabbit hole and just found some Therian going on about how they do it “to gain traction on their pages”- is it possible that OP planted this to raise awareness of Therians because she is one herself- cue sinister music…

OnAndOnAndonAgain · 24/07/2024 00:40

It looks nothing like the deathly hollows or Al anon symbol, it's definitely therian

Nope not a Therian just a curious teacher

A curious teacher with no sense of humour!

Careful, being curious killed the cat.

usersuserse · 24/07/2024 11:36

as a result of this thread I googled therian and found some very weird ideas.

I was vaguely aware of the I-identify-as-an-animal trend but I'd heard about it in the context of it originating from children (older ones obviously) who were mocking transgender self-identification

as in - if it's ok for John to self identify as girl, then I am going to identify as a Dog or a Jedi or something equally daft to make the point that it is ridiculous to say that because you believe you are a dog you are in fact a dog.

I don't know if the two things are related (therian developed out of this) or if they are totally unconnected but from what I've read some of this is closer to a sexual fetish or evidence of a mental health problem than anything else.

It seems there are some people who are just 'yes I feel like my spirit is in fact a squirrel' for whom it makes no real life difference but others who are 'I feel like I am a squirrel. I am meant to be a squirrrel. Nuts for me and living up a tree from now on."

SerendipityJane · 24/07/2024 12:11

Maybe they aspire to release a seminal rock album ?
