Most of these I totally agree with but quite a few of them were once decent and now are wildly overpriced and much poorer quality than they originally were - eg Hotel Chocolat, Mulberry, Dyson, Toast, Pret etc.

Some of these have always been massively overrated for no good reason (Costa, Next, Molton Brown, Nespresso, etc.)

During the credit boom of the 2000s-2020s so many brands got bought out by asset strippers / hedge funds and are now just trading on a company name.

Tbh I don’t know why anyone falls for the idea of the “brand” any more. Most generic supermarket food is exactly the same as (or better) than the branded versions; branded clothes are a rip-off for the most part; chain restaurants, cafes and retail are just in the business of making money wherever they can. Remember how crazy people were for brands like Ted Baker, Abercrombie & Fitch, Guess, French Connection, Laura Ashley, All Saints et al back in the day? And nobody gives a rats’ ass for them now. Think of all that wasted money! That’s where the Stanley cups and so on of today are destined for too - the dustbin of history 😂🤣

Hoover is a brand. Do you mean vacuum?
Hotel chocolate

A vacuum is a space devoid of matter. Do you mean a vacuum cleaner?

No I mean hoover because where I live people use hoover for any brand.
Do you feel all smig now? 🤢

Gowlett · 23/07/2024 16:05

Yes, I say the hoover.

Next. Have never shopped there. Even the infamous Sale.

Werweisswohin · 23/07/2024 16:06

Next jeans fit me well but I don't tend to buy them new. 😬

beguilingeyes · 23/07/2024 17:40

Absolutely Molton Brown.
Next used to be pretty fancy when they first started out. I'm talking mid-80s. I bought a sheepskin coat in their sale once. Now it's all grey and elasticated waists.

orangetree1999 · 23/07/2024 18:09

Nandos. My kids are obsessed with it 🤷‍♀️

MorrisZapp · 23/07/2024 18:16

The inventor of the vacuum cleaner was named Mr Spangler. He showed his invention to his cousin, Mrs Hoover. She thought it was brilliant and her husband agreed. Mr Hoover took out a patent and started manufacturing them.

The brown - that bloody chequered pattern and so much brown. Nobody would ever spend that much on such a combo of browns if there wasn't a fancy label attached.

@beguilingeyes Next was a real breath of fresh air when it started in the 80s. Simple, well-cut clothes in decent fabrics. Completely unrecognisable from the stuff they sell today (though I do still like them for plain cotton t-shirts).
