I've bought a treadmill, now I have to use the bloody thing. If you exercise...

What would you recommend to try and lose belly weight.

I've bought the treadmill for stamina/cardio.

But would like to target my midriff also.

Any suggestions?

It's almost entirely diet. I exercise a huge amount but unless I eat the right kind of food in a calorie deficit I don't lose weight.

LaeralSilverhand · 22/07/2024 18:46

You can’t target fat loss to a specific body location - it’s a myth that doing eg sit-ups will burn belly fat. That simply not how our bodies work. If you lose weight (by diet and exercise) it comes off from everywhere, although it can be quite uneven where it’s coming off from and often belly fat is the last to go.

Cardiovascular exercise (such as running) is a great way of keeping weight off but for actually losing weight diet and calorie reduction is key.

Unfortunately if you are overweight it’s unlikely that you can run for long enough, and fast enough, to burn meaningful calories, so losing weight through calorie control, while slowly building your fitness, is key.

I bought a rowing machine years ago, useless thing it was too. It was propped up against the bathroom wall for a year.

Over all I reckon a lost about thirty pounds when I sold it - but that was the difference between the buying and selling price.

I have the peloton app and use that for treadmill workouts. Like pp’s said though you can’t outrun the fork.

NoWayItWas · 22/07/2024 20:41

After I had my second child I had a bit of weight on my stomach and got rid of it with HIIT and diet.

Now I run 3/4 times a week and do some weights. And eat very healthily almost all of the time.

I've lost 7 stone through diet. I want to get fitter now that I can actually move about.

7 stone! That's amazing. Well done.

It might be worth booking a couple of sessions with a PT. They can really help you get the most out of exercise, make sure you have good technique etc.

Starboy14 · 22/07/2024 20:57

12 incline, 5.5km until I've walked for 3km. It's my variation of a recommendation I saw on Instagram. I think it's helped with my belly fat.

I think it's the 12-3-30. 12 incline, 3mph for 30 mins.

I've also done the couch to 5k before when starting off. I'm not a runner, I prefer interval training.

I can't do that unfortunately, I did try a few years ago but it's just not something I'm able to do.

I need hone based, alone things.

I think a few stretching exercises with two light dumb bells of around half or 1kg would help, windmill the arms, up & down that sort of thing, watch the stomach muscles tense up. That and 'the plank'.
Green tea and avoid foods that cause bloating.
As for the treadmill, if it's a high speed thing then I suggest interval training where you run full pelt for one minute (for me, that was 12.5km/hr I think) then back to around 8km/h for a minute, alternate for 20 mins or so. Does the machine allow for that? Does it have an interval training button that does that automatically?
That was the thing that pushed me on to the next level of weight loss.

Pilates will give you a strong core and good posture.

NewtGuineaPig · 22/07/2024 21:30

Ah ok I thought @RunMamaJustRun I thought you said you wanted fat loss. Fitness is a much easier thing to achieve.
The running will help with stamina especially if you do more structured workouts and keep it varied. I like to do workouts with a heavy bag as well to get more of an upper body workout. If you can't install a heavy bag you could shadow box or do HIIT. Weight lifting is also great for fitness and building muscle. I do a lot of at home yoga too, also great for building general fitness.

RunMamaJustRun · 22/07/2024 21:35

It is stamina and fitness.

But I do still have weight on my stomach
It's always the first place I gain. I'd like to lose another 20lbs but mostly from my stomach but I know it's not magic and I can't choose.

Just set the treadmill at a slightly more than comfortable speed at a slightly more than comfortable incline. Increase as you improve. Most treadmills also have programs that vary speed and incline. Or how about couch to 5k?

Oh couch to 5k is a good idea!

LaeralSilverhand · 22/07/2024 22:02

Yep for stamina and fitness Couch to 5k is the way to go - the official NHS app is great and has fab coaches. Just make sure you set the incline on the treadmill to 2% which makes it a lot more realistic.

Second the peloton app
It's got weights, yoga etc on it too and there's loads of free trials about
If you can't find a trial then PM me and I'll get you a 60 day trial

Outrun the fork? I've lost 100lbs by controlling my diet.

Congrats! It’s just a common phrase basically just repeating what everyone else said that it’s diet for weight loss, you were talking about losing weight off tour midriff

Pogggle · 23/07/2024 09:39

OP maybe report your thread to MNHQ and ask them to amend your post to say you are wanting to tone your stomach rather than saying lose belly weight. Otherwise you will get repeats of people who haven't read your other posts and will keep talking about what you are eating

Bichette · 23/07/2024 09:41

Hula hoop workout to target your waist.

toomanydicksonthedancefloor1 · 23/07/2024 09:42

Firstly congratulations that's an amazing achievement!

I'm not wanting to lose weight but stay healthy and I think for overall fitness you need to mix it up. I do a mix of yoga, 20 minute HIIT workouts and 5km runs. I use YouTube for videos and run outside, I don't have a treadmill. Does the treadmill have an incline? If so I found walking uphill a good workout to start with. Running on a treadmill I find very boring. I also find running hard on my knees now I'm a little older.

BitOutOfPractice · 23/07/2024 09:42

You can't target weight loss from a particular area. You can tone the muscles in a particular area (which in my case are hidden under a layer of fat!) so you're talking about two different things.

Cardio will help you get in a calorie deficit if you watch what you eat. Then you will lose weight.

toomanydicksonthedancefloor1 · 23/07/2024 09:43

Ooh yeah hula hooping is so much fun!
