Microsoft glitch and I’ve lost thousands on a holiday

Anyone else affected? I’m 2.5k down as the airline could not take us to our destination on Saturday. Hoping to get some costs back on flights but hotel/ activities all non refundable and not claimable by insurance

There must be millions affected in so many different ways. My dh who works in IT has had to spend his whole weekend trying to fix problems. he won't get paid anything extra for doing so. I imagine cases like your would be covered by insurance.

I'm sure I heard on the radio that not all insurance will cover this type of unforseen problem, I think they said it's possible but definitely not automatic

I can't remember the term they used but it's to do with where the fault is iirc

Is it a "force majeure" exclusion on the insurance? It's the same clause that means you can't claim when "acts of god/acts of nature" cause delays. Anything totally unexpected or unforeseeable.
Often also written into flight T&Cs - it enables them to not have to refund you if extreme weather/volcanic eruption (remember that one!) stop you travelling.
Complete pain and such an annoyance if it's included in force majeure!

Reminder for everyone to check how much coverage they get in case of force majeure / if at all.

Having said that, has the airline not organised a replacement flight? I have family members who have arrived at their destinations very delayed this weekend, because there’s a lot of rebooking and rerouting going on at the minute.

But surely this was a manmade (or woman) fault, error or omission, not Act of God? Or nature.

If this is about the error last week it wasn’t Microsoft.

Crowdstrike was responsible for this and Microsoft was its customer, however, Microsoft also has a duty to its customers to provide a service.

Hmm but in this case I think the airline does then too? OP isn’t a customer of Microsoft in this instance, the airline is, so only they would be able to claim against Microsoft. The OP would claim against the airline.

Yes. Or someone's insurance - are the airlines insured?

Microsoft didn't send the update. CrowdStrike did.

Less than 1% of all Windows machines were affected.

It was only CrowdStrike's customers who suffered the outage.

All those saying 'don't you have insurance?' have to remember that insurance companies do their hardest not to pay out! Even if the claim is valid they make it as difficult as possible ime 🫤

Also, like COVID claims, this will no doubt be the subject of some kind of insurance industry wide consideration, there's no point in lay people pontificating about what they think the position is.

Insurers will decide and that will be the answer

Exactly. Microsoft should have its own insurance to deal with this to protect itself and it's customers.

It makes me furious that people like OP are suffering while a highly profitable industry just says oops.

No solid advice OP but I would pursue every avenue on this starting with the airline company. They are the ones who have the contract with you and failed to have a back up system. Whether they can claim damages from another party isn't your problem.

All airlines flying out of the UK have to get you to your destination as soon as they can when delay happen, regardless of cause, unless you choose a refund instead. Sounds like you chose refund?

It was, therefore, your choice to forfeit the holiday cost.

It was CrowdStrike's customers who were affected, not Microsoft's.

98% of Microsoft machines were unaffected. I use Windows but I use other vendors' security products, not CrowdStrike's, and my system worked fine throughout.

Might be worth trying your credit card company if you booked with a credit card. I seem to remember our insurance refusing to pay out for our Covid cancellation, but AMEX refunded us once we proved we'd tried to get a refund from the hotel etc.

Force majure is more matters out of our control
act of god is given as an example of circumstances not the definition
