Put the country before himself - yes, finally, but he’s done it.

Please God let my country be ok.

All that would get done is putting Trump in the White House. The Democrats need to appeal beyond their base.

I’m not trying to hear that! I so want a woman in the WH

Cherrysoup · 21/07/2024 21:22

You could say the same about Trump. Genuinely, do you think he was the one directing events in the 4 years he had in the White House? And what were his relevant qualifications? Being the host for American Apprentice? Michelle Obama was apparently extremely supportive of her husband, she probably knows the ins and outs of pretty much everything he did. I could quote an awful lot of law/procedures of my DH's job having lived with him for so long. However, I'm aware this doesn't mean she'd make a fab president but I think she's more popular than KH.

Trump, before deciding which party to adhere to, said he randomly chose the Republicans. This is not what I'd want to hear from a potential candidate. He wasn't interested (isn't, imo) in the betterment of the country. Inciting riots is not my idea of a good candidate. Inviting the crowds to join in his chant of Fight, fight is school playground behaviour-I see it all the time with my Year 9s.

It is difficult enough as a woman to be take seriously in this world. Please give this another think.

My own spouse couldn’t do my job for a day, nor would I try to do his.

PhantomSmoke · 21/07/2024 21:27

While this isn’t wildly unthinkable, at the same time, Trump is already quite well into his years so I’m not sure just how many more terms he would even be able to serve.

He would appoint a successor. Perhaps one of his awful sons.

Omlettes · 21/07/2024 21:30

Callmemel · 21/07/2024 21:25

I honestly think that the idea of someone taking over after a Trump administration is optimistic. The first thing he'll do is sow the seeds of dismantling limited presidential terms.

This could genuinely be the last democratic US election - as we know it - for a long, long time.

My strong feeling is he wont win for reasons not yet clear.
But we will see.
I think its dangerous to push despair because it makes voters apathetic.
Take heart from the French election where they rested victory from the jaws of defeat at the 11th hour.

No, i won't as it isn't going to happen and nor are we in a critical thinking class. Thanks, tho!

Bunbry · 21/07/2024 21:31

@Mommybunny Not sure Biden is as cognitively challenged as Clooney, TV and newspaper commentators, major donors, senators, members of congress all of whom said he was intellectually on top of his game.
Poor Democrats donated, 14m supporters voted in primaries - who in God's name has any credibility to say anything between now and the election?

There is no point in denying that misogyny is still a huge problem.

Thats why women still get treated less favourably than men.

You ignoring it won’t mean it’s not happening because it clearly is.

I agree, but I can see Trump jnr 'taking over' as the years roll on. A political dynasty with King-like powers (thank you, Supreme Court justices) and no moral compass, sense of public duty or conscience whatsoever.

That's true, and a good one to think on.

Most of my work is in the US, along with family and friends. I feel very worried, so thanks for the glimmer of light.

Americans who dont want Trump wether on the Left, Centrist or Rebublicans must put all their energy behind whomever the Democrats elect and vote their hearts out.
Bearing in mind, again, the impact on the rest of the world of his insanity.

Summernightsinthe21stcentury · 21/07/2024 19:17

I am sad too. I think he did a good job in this first term, obviously he is an old man, though.
You have to question how America chose 2 old such old men to run! Trump is no better, mumbling and making words up. Never mind the fact he is really odious.

Money. Nobody poor can afford in the US to run for President. But yes I agree both candidates far too old. Both mumbling, rambling. Keep the nuclear button well away. Please?

Hedgeoffressian · 21/07/2024 21:37

It was a selfish decision to leave it this long. And by endorsing Harris who is very unpopular and has absolutely no chance of winning he’s handed it to the Republicans on a plate. The democrats have such a short window of opportunity now. They need someone who has a chance of winning. I think someone like Michelle Obama would have been a better choice.

Meowzabubz · 21/07/2024 21:37

Cherrysoup · 21/07/2024 20:59

I’ve always thought this made sense. She appears to be an extremely popular choice.

Kamala Harris is only popular in her own state. The southern states in particular seem to like Trump-well off, white, keen on guns, male. Utterly depressing. I think he’ll be a shoe in. The democrats will (possibly?) rudderless.

California hates her, especially the Bay area. She caused a lot of damage there when she was a cop. I highly suspect that there is some truth in what Musk is saying about people in San Fran suddenly openly supporting Trump if they believe Kamala is the alternative.

One recent change is that n one in the US is taking this kind of hyperbole seriously any longer. Even the tops dems are privately admitting things are not as bad as they pretend, regardless of who is elected.

I fear this. Republicans have paid the long game with the court. It really isn't unthinkable, but it is terrifying to me to think about.

anyolddinosaur · 21/07/2024 21:38

If Kamala stays on the ballot as VP doesnt that mean no funding problem?

Wendycoping · 21/07/2024 21:38

Trump is an irrelevance really. Its JD Vance who us being groomed as a presidential candidate and I think he will do incredibly well with voters in years to come (sadly)

When you say work do you mean physically or virtually?

Are you willing to share your worries? We are isolated here in many ways by our own experiences, region, sector, etc. I’m always curious to hear what others are thinking and seeing.

Ah, Sleepy Joe needed to go! Wishing him well - I'm sure he could do with a rest!

That is one of many vile and belittling names Trump gave to his opponents.

Good luck to Kamala Harris... but I wish they were nominating Stacey Abrams instead.

Or Oprah. Given that people like Trump because he finally got a good gig on telly (like us with Johnson), Oprah should be able to deal with his utter fluffshite.

Yes Stacey Abrams would be my choice, i really respect her

Pleasure, they really must unite and vote despite any issues with the next candidate and not assume its a done deal eitherway.
There is as usual, Putins sticky fingers online pushing divisiveness
to undermine the process.
They admitted gleefully last year their involvement in the last two elections and that they would do it this time too.
People forget or think its a conspiracy theory, but it isnt, its just pragmatism.

There is not a single Supreme Court Justice that would overrule presidential term limits. It would be impossible for this to even make it off the house floor anyway. We aren’t monsters or idiots.

With extremist/maga voters, who are not the majority. His extremist views are coming to light now, and are not well received. The big problem is dem voter apathy. If dems had better voter turnout, magas would not stand a chance.
