Help me to like coffee.

I love anything coffee flavoured - chocolates, cake, dessert, ice cream etc. However, I’ve never liked coffee (I’ve not tried it that much but I hate tea!). I find coffee too bitter and would need to add aot of sugar to make it palatable.

I’ve been drinking Diet Coke a lot lately and would like to cut down so thinking coffee might be a good alternative and I do love the flavour. Any tips on how to ease me into actually like drinking it? Without adding loads of sugar!

A latte, I don't need sugar in it and it's a mild coffee flavour, hot or iced are both nice.

CelesteCunningham · 21/07/2024 18:28

Try a mocha, you'll love it.

Also the Nescafé instead sachets have a caramel latte one that's nice.

Cold brew is lovely without sugar, but v high in caffeine!

McDonalds flat white are the bomb.

Crunchymum · 21/07/2024 18:29

Why coffee? I'm really not certain coffee is a good alternative to anything (except if you were swapping say vodka for coffee 😮)

Justsomethoughts · 21/07/2024 18:29

I didn’t used to like it but pushed through. Now I crave it….

Runbunny · 21/07/2024 18:30

You don't really like coffee, all the coffee flavoured things you enjoy have loads of sugar too.

If you stick with it, you'll aquire the taste if you can be bothered

Wimbledoner · 21/07/2024 18:34

Why coffee, how about sparkling water with some cordial instead of Diet Coke? Or different types of teas?

Watchkeys · 21/07/2024 18:36

Why would you try to make yourself like a drink you don't like, when there are so many other drinks available?

pizzaHeart · 21/07/2024 18:38

If you like coffee flavour I would start with americano with milk. Go to M&S cafe first - their’s very mild and then move slowly to other places.

gamerchick · 21/07/2024 18:39

I used coffee to get off sodas. It's pretty effective. I'll never like the stuff so won't add sugar to it. What's the point?

You get used I think

Devilsmommy · 21/07/2024 18:40

Latte for definite. Weak tasting so not too bitter. Maybe you can add a shot of espresso if you want to make it more coffee tasting

KeepinOn · 21/07/2024 18:40

I don't think it's really necessary to drink coffee, but it's ubiquitous and an easy thing to choose off a menu when out and about, meeting friends, etc, so I understand that.

But if you're only looking to cut down on fizzy drinks, I'm not sure a hot beverage will help? Why not wean yourself off Coke with something like sparkling water and cordial? If you need the caffeine, that's different.

Edited

Caffeine isn't great for you either ..

DogInATent · 21/07/2024 18:43

I like coffee but dislike coffee-flavoured things. Have you tried cold black coffee? Coffee-flavoured things always taste like cold coffee to me.

Coconutter24 · 21/07/2024 18:46

Why would you choose coffee as a replacement for Diet Coke? I know coffee would be the better option as it’s not full of sweeteners but interested to hear the reason

leeverarch · 21/07/2024 19:01

Do what I did. Have a lot of sugar in it to start with, and then gradually reduce the sugar you put in it.

Ohhhthedrama · 21/07/2024 19:13

The problem with coffee in the UK is that it's made with milk. The last time I came home, I couldn't get a coffee with cream or half & half anywhere. Coffee needs cream & sugar hot or iced.

scoobiedew · 21/07/2024 19:19

You really have to start on something sweet like a mocha, sweet latte or sweet iced coffee and then once the caffeine addiction takes hold ease into unsweetened varieties. Enjoy Smile

I don’t like sparkling water and I hate tea with a passion! 🙈

Well I like the smell and taste of coffee flavoured things so was thinking I could enjoy coffee if I found the right one. Other things available… I don’t like tea, sparkling water and don’t really want anything full of sugar or sweeteners.

Because I love coffee flavoured things so figured I might learn to like coffee if I found the right one!

An iced latte - with Baileys. Tremendous

Disclaimer - I'm on holiday and introduced the hotel to them last year. We returned this year and the daytime barman immediately made me one and said everyone loves them now!

Otherwise decent instant. Douwe Egberts gold is lovely and smooth. Brown sugar and a glue of milk.

sciencemama · 21/07/2024 20:19

You can buy coffee syrups that aren't necessarily that sweet which you may like. Thoughtfully do a lovely range!

Try a cappuccino mayb?

AlbaAurora · 21/07/2024 20:27

I was the same as you around 6 years ago and now love it and can't be without!

Try a tiny bit of sugar to start with then just put in less and less. Flat whites are the perfect smooth balance between milk and coffee. I find lattes too milky, can barely taste the coffee.

You also get really nice sugar free coffee syrups in tk maxx in loads of flavours. I still use one sometimes, you only need the tiniest amount.

Good luck and push through - it's worth it!
