Help me to like coffee.

I love anything coffee flavoured - chocolates, cake, dessert, ice cream etc. However, I’ve never liked coffee (I’ve not tried it that much but I hate tea!). I find coffee too bitter and would need to add aot of sugar to make it palatable.

I’ve been drinking Diet Coke a lot lately and would like to cut down so thinking coffee might be a good alternative and I do love the flavour. Any tips on how to ease me into actually like drinking it? Without adding loads of sugar!

Three kings sugar free syrup is your friend - iced lattes are delicious and I only started drinking coffee in mid thirties. Lattes in general, as long as you add sugar free syrup, takes away that bitterness.

If you like coffee flavoured things you might like Nescafe Azera with milk. It's a milder taste than ground coffee.

Coffee is good for you in its
unadulterated state. Try it with coconut milk. It’s naturally sweet.

You could try a Magic Coffee which is a really lovely, surprisingly strong coffee with a splash of milk and it’s not bitter, just smooth. It’s made with a double ristretto instead of espresso which lacks the bitterness as it’s brewed more quickly, but packs quite a caffeine hit.

M&S are the only place to officially make it in the UK but it’s easy enough to replicate a double ristretro with a little, barely foamed steamed milk. More likely to find an indie coffee shop will make it for you though.

You need smooth coffee, if you're making it yourself. Kenco or for very mild try Mellow Birds.

I love Costa coffee but Starbucks I find revolting, tastes like they have burnt the beans!

I like Nescafe espresso powder (1 tsp) with boiling water, then a couple of teaspoons of double cream. It's lovely and smooth. No sugar.

Don't drink the instant granules - they play havoc with my stomach. Get yourself a cafetiere and a good quality ground coffee.

Iced latte is probably the starting point , very milky with a mild coffee taste. I don't like them because I like coffee! I like a ristretto with a little foamed milk or a good flat white/machiato (if the barista understands what a machiato is) but they are probably not good starting points if you struggle with a strong coffee flavour

Oh, me too. I didn't realise that was 'a thing' and always suspected myself of making it up! (sorry OP; not my thread!)

I absolutely adore the smell of coffee beans being roasted, ground, percolated, etc. However I absolutely cannot stand the taste of coffee. They say that taste is 90% smell but how can that be?

Well I like the smell and taste of coffee flavoured things so was thinking I could enjoy coffee if I found the right one. Other things available… I don’t like tea, sparkling water and don’t really want anything full of sugar or sweeteners.

I so relate to this - I never liked tea and coffee, but now I like peppermint tea and can drink black coffee it's much easier socially.

It's surprisingly nice (and totally lacking in toxins) to drink hot water. If you can squirt a bit of lemon juice in it, even better. Might be worth considering, rather than replacing diet coke with a drink you don't like that's full of caffeine!

PrincessHoneysuckle · 21/07/2024 21:31

Black coffee is nicer I trained myself to like it

Luddite26 · 21/07/2024 21:32

I drink gallons every day but I only like
Red Kenco, semi skimmed milk in first then water from the kettle. That's it no lattes no cappuccinos, espressos etc. but milk has to go in first so the coffee doesn't get bitter. Good luck.

It's definitely a thing! 😬

I have a cafetiere in work and use coffee bags when away from the office.

Costa coffee I find is definitely the strongest 😁

veritusvarity · 22/07/2024 08:31

Do it the French way; black coffee and a pain au chocolat to dip into aforementioned drink!
Coffee goes really well with something sweet, the bitter and the sweet is a good combo, but never sugar in coffee.

I would say though, coffee gives you vial breath and if you're sensitive to caffeine, withdrawal headaches (which are similar in pain to migraine). So you might be better off not going down that road!
