Daft question. Are supermarkets in the U.K. affected. We are almost out of food. 🤦‍♀️

Our local Waitrose (South East) cash only this morning.

Drivingnowhere · 19/07/2024 09:06

This is why we need to keep cash! Start using it or we will be helpless in these situations in the future when it disappears altogether.

Absolutely agree with You

Poundland also ok. It's not quite total Armageddon but it's obviously bad.

I'm loving this.

It reads like if Armageddon comes, we should all head to Poundland as one of the last places standing!

Patient Access and the NHS database is down. I couldn’t order my repeat prescription this morning. I assume it’s connected. I’ll have to phone the practice like the good old days!

I haven't read the whole thread but GP systems also not working here (I work in one!) so don't bother phoning just yet! Maybe put in a paper request like the really old days so they can process it when they're up and running!

DH works in tech. He's manically laughing. His company are perfectly fine.

He's getting wound up at the BBC news coverage and says the reporters and 'experts' haven't got a clue what they are talking about. Some are going to actively scare the shit out of people and are adding to anxiety not reasurring.

He's been getting the details from fellow techies.

He's saying theres two problems; one is the cloud which is easy to resolve by a manual intervention because its centralised. But theres a second one which means you have to manually intervene on each device - someone who knows what they are doing needs to do this. (Of which there are a limited number of people and thousands of devices). Effectively a more complex 'switch it off and switch it on again' type thing.

He said if he was at a previous job he'd have to go to Germany to sort out issues. If, of course, he could get on a flight.

He thinks its hilarous.

The company at the heart of it, cloudstrike have lost 8% share value - in the middle of the night US time - they are screwed.

Looks like your armchair expert DH has it all sorted then. What a relief.

I work in tech and oh my god I cannot even imagine how stressed those software developers must be right now! Imagine writing some dodgy code and taking down the world's IT systems. I think I'd have to change my name and move to Panama or something.

Imagine being able to take down the world’s it systems just by writing some dodgy code.

BloodyHellKenAgain · 19/07/2024 09:40

I'm really glad I've kept a cheque book just in case !!

Footbull · 19/07/2024 08:43

This reads like a Russian bot trying to get us to panic buy.

I doubt there will be an imminent effect on toilet roll.

Luckily I got 48brolls delivered last week

More worried about a run in the banks as people panic amd try to get cash

CatchHimDerry · 19/07/2024 09:42

My company is down for a lot of aspects but not everything. It’s the talk of the WhatsApp groups 😂

My husband was in Waitrose about 7:30 this morning and it was cash only and all self service tills were off - I assume that was related.

I dont understand your point, what's your husband's reaction got to do with anything?

I'd be a bit concerned about manically laughing at people being inconvenienced, is he OK?

Parker231 · 19/07/2024 09:44

It’s a worldwide problem relating to the deployment of a software patch globally. Most significant problems in APAC.

I'm really glad I've kept a cheque book just in case !!

Cheques are outdated here. They are not even a thing anymore.

I had never thought about it, but I am quite surprised to read that they are not obsolete in UK (I assume you are in the UK).

I have to head off out now, and sadly some of it involves having to pay for things, so I will see how this affects me personally before too long.

My ds is in tech and isn't convinced this was just a spectacular eff up at Cloudstrike.

Footbull · 19/07/2024 09:45

Imagine being the person who sent the patch out without proper QA because you just wanted to get on and eat your KitKat.

GiveMeSpanakopita · 19/07/2024 09:46

BloodyHellKenAgain · 19/07/2024 09:40

I'm really glad I've kept a cheque book just in case !!

I've still got a cache of US dollars from the Great Financial Crisis (was working in the City then and was told by my boss that if all the banks went down, the greenback as the world reserve would be the most reliable tender).

I also have a great many tins and a dog for protection (and indeed, if it is the End Times, protein).

I feel ready to face the apocalypse and also feel that there are few better sites to face it with than Mumsnet! 😂

I think @RedToothBrush was being lighthearted.

MaggieFS · 19/07/2024 09:47

@RedToothBrush Yes, I've just had to do a quick whizz round lots of shops to get various bits and pieces before I start work. I can confirm, in the event of Armageddon, we will have to forego the fancy stuff (Waitrose and Gail's) but we'll be fine for everything (Sainsbury's) and have a bloody good kids party with lots of Haribo (Poundland and Card Factory ok) plus still be able to take care of ourselves (Boots also ok).

Alalalalalongalalalalalonglonglilong · 19/07/2024 09:47

I'm perpetually afraid of this happening on a larger scale, I'm always slow to move anything to more tech dependent and I feel i get laughed at for being out of date. But it goes to show it is possible, what if it happens on a larger scale for a longer period.

GiveMeSpanakopita · 19/07/2024 09:47

Mymanyellow · 19/07/2024 09:40

But that's why our modern and total reliance on the internet is so stupid. It only needs to fall into the wrong hands.

cherrygarden · 19/07/2024 09:45

Maybe us women can't understand his superior man reaction

Lalalacrosse · 19/07/2024 09:47

my office is functioning just fine. but that’s great because we also have AC here…

RedToothBrush · 19/07/2024 09:48

Blueyatemyhomework · 19/07/2024 09:21

So are you saying people who routinely ignore the "reboot your computer to load the latest security updates" aren't to blame for once?

Yep.

Thats right.

mitogoshi · 19/07/2024 09:49

Alas my Microsoft server is working just fineHmm

Would have been a rather nice day to have a bonus day off!

Gosh I have to be honest I think the last time I took out cash was…2015? 16? Almost a decade ago!
