Just warning you - obviously if you are on here then it hasn't hit you hard! But I have just lost google, and my work internet connection

I'm in local government and our systems are so antiquated that we probably wouldn't notice if there was an issue.

IBelieveInFerries · 19/07/2024 09:12

My work's system is unfortunately fully functional. I am so exhausted and could do with a couple of hours of downtime.

I work in tech and oh my god I cannot even imagine how stressed those software developers must be right now! Imagine writing some dodgy code and taking down the world's IT systems. I think I'd have to change my name and move to Panama or something.

I remember when there was an outage for a system we used when we came back from Xmas holidays one January. We spent the entire day fixing it and updating security keys.

Waste of developers, devOps and QAs time as we couldn't do any work. Luckily I was WFH so in between meetings I could find things to waste time.

Jellytotsandwinegums · 19/07/2024 09:14

My work connection is fine, what a relief 😞

isthismylifenow · 19/07/2024 09:16

Reugny · 19/07/2024 09:07

Why?

There are other security firms.

My banking is fine.

Are you asking why only some banks are down here or why it's a bit concerning?

It’s a windows update with the update called “cyber strike”.

It has affected all the fuel stations in my city along with the major supermarkets.

Offices operating on windows software have also shut down as everyone got the blue screen of death.

Apparently you can restart your PC’s in safe mode and go to the latest update and manually delete the “cyber strike” code.

Major companies are going to have to get their IT departments to deal with the software update. I’ve no idea how the supermarkets and fuel stations are going to deal with it if the internet companies are also down. It would have to be a manual patch to every terminal which isn’t realistic.

This reads like a Russian bot trying to get us to panic buy.

I doubt there will be an imminent effect on toilet roll.

Christ. I need to buy toilet rolls today!

So are you saying people who routinely ignore the "reboot your computer to load the latest security updates" aren't to blame for once?

MaggieFS · 19/07/2024 09:22

Sainsbury's is completely fine as normal.

SummerScarf · 19/07/2024 09:22

Wolfiefan · 19/07/2024 08:54

@Footbull promise I’m neither a bot or Russian. In fairly rural GLOS. Have looked online and can’t see any info. Don’t want to be driving round looking for a supermarket where I can pay!! (Also recovering from a wisdom tooth out so need to buy yet more soft food!)

I’m not far from there and have just been to an M and S food and all was fine.

cherrygarden · 19/07/2024 09:23

Sky News works fine where I am.

CeeJay81 · 19/07/2024 09:24

Oh gosh. Came on here to see if anyone had posted about tesco app not working. This must be why.

MaggieFS · 19/07/2024 09:26

Poundland also ok. It's not quite total Armageddon but it's obviously bad.

Meadowfinch · 19/07/2024 09:28

Currently sitting in Faro airport waiting for a flight to Bristol. No delays reported, no issues here so far. I've checked the Bristol airport site and they seem to be functioning normally as well so I guess neither use Microsoft.

MagpiePi · 19/07/2024 09:31

A couple of years ago, some muppet at our company downloaded some malware onto a work laptop. Every single laptop in the UK wide company to be checked and cleaned or wiped and you couldn’t do any work, not even offline, until yours had been sorted. It took weeks. It was in a summer after the pandemic so a lot of people were already wfh.
It was terrible <sigh>

Hummingbird75 · 19/07/2024 09:33

It is a snow day!!!
With the bonus of no sign, blue skies and 25c I am sure we will find something to do! 😎

psuedocream3 · 19/07/2024 09:33

No massive issues here, but the local B&Q couldn't do contactless payments, only chip and pin payments which was taking a long time to go through.

GiveMeSpanakopita · 19/07/2024 09:34

To be perfectly honest? I had a rare hour to myself in the house this morning and was lying in bed masturbating 😂

Rejoined the real world to find everyone panicking about a massive tech outage and I really don't care!

Wontletmeusemynormalname · 19/07/2024 09:34

Wolfiefan · 19/07/2024 08:30

Daft question. Are supermarkets in the U.K. affected. We are almost out of food. 🤦‍♀️

Payment systems are affected.

One of the reasons we shouldn't be pushing for a cashless society.

candycane222 · 19/07/2024 09:35

Im self employed so I think it would probably be safest just not to turn anything on at all today.. now where did I put my sunhat?

Lifeomars · 19/07/2024 09:35

Drivingnowhere · 19/07/2024 09:06

This is why we need to keep cash! Start using it or we will be helpless in these situations in the future when it disappears altogether.

This is why I have hung onto a lot of my CDs and DVDs. I was going to get rid of the lot but decided not to just in case the day arrived when the internet collapsed and I needed some distractions

candycane222 · 19/07/2024 09:36

...hoping our fancy new electric car doesn't run on Windows 10 though 😂

RedToothBrush · 19/07/2024 09:37

DH works in tech. He's manically laughing. His company are perfectly fine.

He's getting wound up at the BBC news coverage and says the reporters and 'experts' haven't got a clue what they are talking about. Some are going to actively scare the shit out of people and are adding to anxiety not reasurring.

He's been getting the details from fellow techies.

He's saying theres two problems; one is the cloud which is easy to resolve by a manual intervention because its centralised. But theres a second one which means you have to manually intervene on each device - someone who knows what they are doing needs to do this. (Of which there are a limited number of people and thousands of devices). Effectively a more complex 'switch it off and switch it on again' type thing.

He said if he was at a previous job he'd have to go to Germany to sort out issues. If, of course, he could get on a flight.

He thinks its hilarous.

The company at the heart of it, cloudstrike have lost 8% share value - in the middle of the night US time - they are screwed.

allthemiddlechildrenoftheworld · 19/07/2024 09:37

@confusedaunt thank goodness we got home at around 4am this morning to edinburgh from turkey, even though we were over 2 hours late leaving!!!!
