Just warning you - obviously if you are on here then it hasn't hit you hard! But I have just lost google, and my work internet connection

Daft question. Are supermarkets in the U.K. affected. We are almost out of food. 🤦‍♀️

Surely you mean is your local Tesco or whereever you shop affected? Not much help if the ones in Cornwall are open and you live in Aberdeen 😀

Local Facebook is your friend for this question

at my local supermarket you can't pay by contactless or phone but you can by chip and pin.

I work in tech and oh my god I cannot even imagine how stressed those software developers must be right now! Imagine writing some dodgy code and taking down the world's IT systems. I think I'd have to change my name and move to Panama or something.

Perhaps evidence that monopolies in tech are a bad thing.

According to the industry news outlet The Register it's a security product called Falcon Sensor from a company called CrowdStrike that's causing problems with MS Windows - Windows 10 specifically, if I've read it aright

Is it wrong that I’m reeeeally hoping my work laptop won’t work when I turn it on??

I was hoping that too but sadly it seems to be working ok so far. There's a memo from IT about some server things being down though.....

Is it likely it's just something simple that's done this or has a cleaner unplugged something important to get the floor vacuumed?

That would be the ultimate Mumsnet “problems with my cleaner” thread!

My BIL works in IT and he is saying the same thing.

From what I've read it was a dodgy software update. So a team has tried to fix a small bug...and taken down the whole thing. Oops!

"My cleaner has asked for a pay rise but I noticed she regularly unplugs an important server that I need for work. Aibu to sack her?"

I am on the complete other side of the world and a few of our banks are down, also not able to use card payments at the moment from affect banks.

This was reported here :

The outage appears to relate to an issue at global cybersecurity firm Crowdstrike

A bit concerning...

Maclean45 · 19/07/2024 09:01

I’m in NZ and it’s chaos here. Online banking is down, can’t use contactless to pay etc. just got back from the supermarket and couldn’t pay for my groceries!

BBC radio said that earlier, it seems to be being reported everywhere

Blueyatemyhomework · 19/07/2024 09:02

Is it likely these gaps could be exploited while the systems are down?

AllTipAndNoIceberg · 19/07/2024 09:05

All my work stuff seems fine 😔

I know nothing about this sort of thing but if the system is down how can anybody get in?

I went to Lidl at 7.30am it all worked.

Don't know about other supermarkets. I was going to walk to another one but it's too hot so I will go tomorrow or later.

(I'm in London)

Drivingnowhere · 19/07/2024 09:06

This is why we need to keep cash! Start using it or we will be helpless in these situations in the future when it disappears altogether.

Why?

There are other security firms.

My banking is fine.

Cash is king

TeenToTwenties · 19/07/2024 09:07

Our Waitrose tried chip and pin at 8.10 this morning (contactless out). My first one went through, but the second didn't so I think they were going to go cash only.

(I split my shopping as only had £60 cash so we tried the chip and pin on it to see if it worked.)

I worked in telecoms in Australia in the early 90s and an entire network was down for hours because of similar - not a cleaner but a maintenance person pulled a plug........ It caused havoc but was in equal measures hilarious.

I'm not sure Bond would agree

MaggieFS · 19/07/2024 09:09

I wonder how long it will last, or how soon before cash machines are emptied?

Morrisons can take chip and pin but not contactless and Waitrose is cash only. Fortunately I cad my cards on me!

Loads of people walking out at the door though upon being told, it did occur to me looking at a mound of freshly baked goods, there might be a lot of wastage at the end of today.

Ooh, cheap Danish pastries if you have cash.

Bang goes the diet.
