How many people do you know that have been to prison?

Only counting people you know quite well (say well enough to chat with so friends, family members or close colleagues sort of level) not passing acquaintances or friends of friends

None.

the2andahalfmillion · 16/07/2024 22:57

Two. One from uni for possession with intent but now dead, another for controlling and coercive bahaviour (categorically not a friend but I went to their house once for tea 🤮)

MouseofCommons · 16/07/2024 22:57

3 acquaintances in my twenties from the pub.
Two had gone to prison for football violence. The other robbery, he had been a junkie.

albalass · 16/07/2024 23:02

Two. One was someone I was at secondary school with - although he was in my year I didn't really know him. Only knew he'd gone to prison in his 30s as it was a serious crime that was in the news. The other is someone in my wider friendship group.

AutismHelp1980 · 16/07/2024 23:02

A school dad - peado
my friend’s brother’s best mate - peado
my grandfather’s best friend - murder
my brother’s school friend - drug dealer .

AutismHelp1980 · 16/07/2024 23:02

Oh forgot my Aunty’s ex, some machete related assault!

One, but jail rather than prison.

What's the difference?

AzureAnt · 16/07/2024 23:05

3
Ex partner, sex offence (he's dead now)
Ex manager stole a large amount of money from the business owner (he's dead now)
Close family did a few silly things as a youngster. Turned their life around now

SnowFrogJelly · 16/07/2024 23:06

Femme2804 · 16/07/2024 23:10

My uncle and my grandma. Both due to corruption. Big money corruption. Not in england though. Out of jail now and still rich as ever.

OnlyFrench · 16/07/2024 23:11

Three.
Deeply unpleasant boss, got really bad vibes from him. Did a bit of research and found he'd stolen a lot of money from someone he was supposed to be protecting.
DH family member, total thug, firearms, drugs, violence. He hasn't improved.
Absolutely lovely young man I worked with, couldn't believe it when I heard what happened. He totally turned his life around afterwards.

Gorgonemilezola · 16/07/2024 23:12

None close. Son of a work colleague for sexual assault.

FangsForTheMemory · 16/07/2024 23:12

None but I’d guess most people don’t brag about it afterwards.

Badbadbunny · 16/07/2024 23:13

None at all, not even expanding beyond close family friends to literally anyone I know.

Scottishdreams1991 · 16/07/2024 23:13

My father in law spent almost 17 yrs in prison for murder and my mum for a couple of yrs for something ahe never did tell me the truth about

Username1010 · 16/07/2024 23:16

None.

Although I heard a rumour that the father of somebody I went to school with (and haven't seen in thirty years), was in prison for assault many years ago. He was a shady character who wasn't much liked so I don't know if there was any substance to this rumour.

EmmaPeele · 16/07/2024 23:17

My former boss's son, ex-boss was a supposedly devout Christian, always bragging about his perfect family and how well they were all doing. Appeared to be Mr Nice Guy on the outside but could be nasty when he wanted to be. I knew his son well (and his wife and daughter), as he was always visiting his dad at work. Boss was a very judgemental person, he was always right and we were all beneath him. His son actually seemed much nicer than him. I found out his son grew into a big time criminal, he committed major fraud and drained many unsuspecting people of their life savings/pensions. The worst thing was my ex boss, the "Christian" was in on some of it too. His son got sent down for a very long time and my ex boss was lucky to get away without any jail time, but was seriously shamed by the Judge and was all over the papers.

Colacao · 16/07/2024 23:20

Two of my sister’s exes have been in prison. Also a friend of the family. So, three.

Thunderpants88 · 16/07/2024 23:22

Mirandawrongs · 16/07/2024 21:37

Several.
mostly my cousins. Mixture of drug offences, assault and being absolute twats (all deserved sentences)
one stabbed a bloke who raped her as a young girl, she stayed at scene and admitted everything.

Out of interest did she have to serve time and more importantly did he?

Thunderpants88 · 16/07/2024 23:22

Two, one for fraud and one in a maximum security for class A drug dealing when we lived in America

ilovesooty · 16/07/2024 23:26

Professionally I've known loads.

Personally - these days - probably half a dozen. I was arrested many years ago and spent several hours in a cell at the station, though I wasn't charged.

DressDilemma · 16/07/2024 23:26

Zero

outdamnedspots · 16/07/2024 23:27

DinnaeFashYersel · 16/07/2024 23:27

Three

A colleague in the late 90s sent to prison for assault

A colleague of 5 years ago sent to prison for fraud

A current colleague who spent time in prison in his early 20s for dealing drugs. Now in his 30s and reformed
