What things do you only use pricey versions of? And why?

For me its:
Gym wear: I find it fits better, lasts longer and doesn't get that weird spring onion smell that I can never seem to get out of cheaper stuff.

Shoes: After many years of many thousands of fast fashion pumps and ballet flats, I've started buying expensive shoes. They last, they don't generally leak, and they're comfortable.

Socks: Wider choice of pretty patterns, wash well and don't wear through as quickly as cheaper versions.

Knickers: I've spent too many years in generic, badly fitting, off the shelf under crackers. Now I invest a little bit more in no cross seam boxers. They're not enormously more expensive but my minge and my arse crack are thankful.

Cheese: Cheap cheese these days just tastes like a whole load of nothing so I invest in good, strong cheese that actually tastes of cheese.

Pies: We eat a lot of pie in my house 😬I find supermarket pies bland and not very 'filled'. We spent about £75/month on pricey pies nowadays.

Some alcohol: Some alcohol is definitely better when you throw some cash at it. Wine, mostly. Not all though - I can't tell the difference between Value vodka and expensive stuff. And Tesco Cognac is my absolute favourite even when stacked against very very expensive versions.

Squash: Once you've had Vimto squash (20p per 100ml), there's just no going back to supermarket own (6p per 100ml).

Foundation: Lasts and can actually be blended properly so I don't end up looking like a paint-by-numbers face mask.

What about you?

I only use clipper tea, mutti tinned tomatoes, maile tartare sauce and branston beans- sketchers sandals and trainers and rieker boots and Toni and guy twice a year for my hair

Rubyupbeat · 15/07/2024 14:13

Fabrics- I make a lot of my own clothing and refuse to spend time and energy on making an item with cheap feel fabric.

I also like Rituals shower gels and diffusers

I really need to know how you’re spending £75 a month on pies, and why you’re boycotting M&S @Limth

We get a six pie variety box costing £25, roughly three times a month.
Ergo, £75 a month.

I'm boycotting M&S because of their mixed sex changing rooms policy and their ridiculous inability to see how alienating it is for their very specific customer base. I'm stubborn so once I start boycotting somewhere I never ever go back.

I think mine are mostly related to getting older. I buy expensive comfortable shoes because otherwise I'd be crippled. I also love a waterproof , long cosy coat and warm hats and gloves.
I found that my corner sofa was so low, now I am decrepit , that I was having to go onto my knees on the floor and pull myself up from there, using the coffee table for purchase fgs. I now have much higher, luxurious and expensive chairs and sofas and it is bliss. They'll probably outlive me.

Xyz1234567 · 15/07/2024 14:29

I also buy the most expensive theatre tickets every time. It's just better.

Mrsredlipstick · 15/07/2024 14:32

The collective yoghurt, ditto yeo
British meat
Heinz tomato sauce
Foxes chocolate biscuits
Maccies vanilla ice cream
Sloggi knickers
Falke or woolford tights
Seche vitae nail dry top coat
Mac foundation
The white company bed linen and pillows
Duresta or John Lewis sofas
Leather interiors in cars

Yes. Spent to much time as a teen (with family) in the Gods, needing opera glasses to see the show, and getting over heated.

NeedthatFridayfeeling · 15/07/2024 14:33

Cornflakes/Bran Flakes/Special K - HAS to be Kellogg's
Tomato soup - has to be Heinz
Chopped tomatoes/tomato ketchup - has to be Mutti
Reed diffuser - only ever buy from Next which i think £30 but the smell is lovely and it lasts.
Trainers - only Asics now as good grip and arch support, same for my daughter
Good butter
Hair - i go every 6 weeks for my roots doing and highlights touching up
I buy a lot of nail wraps but they aren't expensive at £2 a set.
Twinings tea bags.
I love buying bread from the local bakery, though it's not the only bread i eat as it is pricey, gorgeous treat though.
Meat from the butchers that visits the village every week, and the odd pie 😀

Josie234 · 15/07/2024 14:36

Shampoo and conditioner. Organic. It doesn't strip or coat my hair and means I don't need to buy any other products.

I feel that by not stripping or coating my hair, the natural oils prevent frizz and add body and curl. My hair has never been so healthy.

Theotherone234 · 15/07/2024 14:44

Perfume

That's all

Cheap perfume smells revolting so I ask for the proper stuff for birthday or Xmas and always buy it duty free or when abroad

Keep it cold and dark and it lasts for years

mynewusername2023 · 15/07/2024 14:44

I found a bra that feels amazing and supports me well, and it was £42. I have 8 of the same bra and it's the only one I wear.

Limth · 15/07/2024 14:46

@mynewusername2023 Please tell me what is this magical bra you speak of?

Can anyone recommend a good loose leaf tea, as mentioned before?

I also only use Marmite.

letsgoooo · 15/07/2024 14:56

@GameOfJones

Gym leggings. After trying Sweaty Betty power leggings I won't buy any others. They hold their shape, don't ride down and actually make my wobbly bum look great.
The horrible news is since SN was sold, the quality has plummeted. The beloved power leggings are power no more.
If you need an alternative look at LNDR fatal attraction

WirelessWendy · 15/07/2024 14:56

I’m willing to go cheap on a lot of things, but now that I have some spare cash I will never again skimp on:

A decent mattress. I got rid of my shitty Emma mattress and bought a properly sprung Hypnos. My bad back and aching joints have now vanished, and I’m now sleeping properly again.

Marmite. None of the alternatives taste the same.

Good bread, jam, butter, cheese, and ham. I like a good sandwich.

Slippers and sandals with decent arch support. Haflinger or Birkenstock.

Comfortable knickers. I still haven’t found a good bra, though.

Thewonderful · 15/07/2024 14:58

Would love some recommendations for decent quality shoes

Comedycook · 15/07/2024 14:59

Prescription glasses and sunglasses. I do have the odd cheapo pair for emergencies though but for my main pairs, I spend more on nice brands, thin lenses and polarisation. I struggle without them and use them every day so consider it worthwhile.

Also toothpaste. Own brands aren't as good imo as branded toothpaste.

Nsky62 · 15/07/2024 15:01

Boycott fairy def, bio d washing up liquid much better than Ecover!
And no colours, no need.
Bamboo socks def the best.
President butter must be unsalted, much better than English unsalted. Dry cure bacon.
wool duvet, topper and pillows great
must be pure cotton bedding

TheMithrasDirective · 15/07/2024 15:53

Droolylabradors · 15/07/2024 13:47

Yes, dropped shoulder seams, a curved back hem that falls just below my bum. Long sleeves that fall halfway down my hands.

I wear it all the time. I've just debobbled it for the first time, but still haven't washed it.

It's the most fantastic jumper, only downside is that I have to wear it with a cape as I can't get The sleeves into a coat!

I think I have the same one, yes, beautiful!

CedarFence · 15/07/2024 16:15

Butter. President or Lurpak. President only if ‘spreadable’

Coffee - though Lidl’s deluxe is v good so I do buy that

Olive oil for salad drizzling

Outdoor gear. Proper technical stuff that is actually fully waterproof etc But sourced in sales, usually.

Papyrophile · 15/07/2024 16:19

I agree with everyone who buys Mutti tomatoes and decent Italian-made pasta (though DS's home made is better still) so I offer Kewpie mayo as an upgrade to Hellman's.
Otherwise, butter is butter as long as it's unsalted. Editing to add that olive oil for drizzling needs to be a higher quality than the Lidl version that's all purpose cooking juice.

Yorkshire tea, or loose tea. Hormozi Columbian coffee.
Fever Tree tonic, not Schweppes... gin is gin.
Andia Fora trainers, because the styles are mad, the colours are great and the size 38 fits perfectly.

xxSideshowAuntSallyxx · 15/07/2024 16:24

Weetabix and Shredded Wheat
Jam (Bonne Mamon is so much nicer)
Honey has to be local not shop bought mass produced, unless I can get some Greek honey which is much thicker. I happily pay for it too but I'm lucky that I have several farm shops that I can buy local honey from.
Cat litter
Cheese
Ham
Gym clothes and trainers
Nutella
