What things do you only use pricey versions of? And why?

For me its:
Gym wear: I find it fits better, lasts longer and doesn't get that weird spring onion smell that I can never seem to get out of cheaper stuff.

Shoes: After many years of many thousands of fast fashion pumps and ballet flats, I've started buying expensive shoes. They last, they don't generally leak, and they're comfortable.

Socks: Wider choice of pretty patterns, wash well and don't wear through as quickly as cheaper versions.

Knickers: I've spent too many years in generic, badly fitting, off the shelf under crackers. Now I invest a little bit more in no cross seam boxers. They're not enormously more expensive but my minge and my arse crack are thankful.

Cheese: Cheap cheese these days just tastes like a whole load of nothing so I invest in good, strong cheese that actually tastes of cheese.

Pies: We eat a lot of pie in my house 😬I find supermarket pies bland and not very 'filled'. We spent about £75/month on pricey pies nowadays.

Some alcohol: Some alcohol is definitely better when you throw some cash at it. Wine, mostly. Not all though - I can't tell the difference between Value vodka and expensive stuff. And Tesco Cognac is my absolute favourite even when stacked against very very expensive versions.

Squash: Once you've had Vimto squash (20p per 100ml), there's just no going back to supermarket own (6p per 100ml).

Foundation: Lasts and can actually be blended properly so I don't end up looking like a paint-by-numbers face mask.

What about you?

Trainers - I only buy decent branded trainers like Nike, ASICS, adidas, New Balance because they have poured money into getting them right and comfy

I agree with a lot from PP

No cheap knickers again

Decent leathers shoes, boots and trainers

Decent bags - I have an amazing Herschel backpack which is absolute quality so now have duffel bags from them too for DC

Decent butter which makes homemade cakes and cookies taste a million times better plus nicer on toast too

I would like to buy better beef from the butchers but it's too far and expensive at the moment

Skincare - I will never use cheap inferior quality as certain decent brands have worked absolute wonders on my skin. Nothing ridiculously expensive just decent brands

Fairy liquid really is the best

Ariel gel is the absolute best I've found for cleaning clothes

Happy enough with Lidl dishwasher tablets but I was given free fairy dishwasher gel tablets in my weekly shop which are actually noticeably better

I now use loose leaf tea which is better than my bags. I'm happy with

RookieMa · 15/07/2024 12:37

Foundation - I've always bought high end foundation but currently very happy with Boots No 7

Most of my bras cost over £30 as cheaper ones don't support or flatter my large bust. I like buying branded laundry products as the cheaper ones don't have much scent, the exception being the Aldi coconut liquid and scent boosters. Fairy liquid too.

Coffee. By post from PACT. Life is too short for shit coffee.

Wool/cashmere jumpers. I buy them second hand on ebay etc. I can't get warm in synthetic jumpers. I did treat myself to a COS cashmere jumper last year and I'm still wearing it in July! At £220 it was expensive but cost per wear so far must be in the low ££s. I'll wear it for years to come.

Is it one of the chunky ones they did? They were absolutely gorgeous and a steal at that price for what you get. One of my favourite buys last autumn.

I paid 98 quid for a bra from a specialist high end underwear shop, it's no better than anything I've bought mid range from Marks. Lesson learned !

Bluevelvetsofa · 15/07/2024 12:56

When I could afford it, Rigby and Peller bras.
Turner’s Pies
Tempur mattress. The newer ones have temperature control.

Limth · 15/07/2024 12:59

I've given up on bras. I reluctantly wear a high support sports bra if its absolutely imperative that my tits aren't flapping happy with chapel hat pegs leading the way. Otherwise, I live in bra lets.

Yeah, that's out of my price range for a bra. By cheaper, I meant things like Primark, Matalan, Asda etc, where I do shop for clothes, but wouldn't wear a bra from there, versus places like Ann Summers, Bravissimo etc x

Eggs, poultry and other meat we occasionally consume.

Actually mostly food in general, I know it is a luxury now to not have to worry about food bills in this day and age. But I really try to be careful what I put into my body and where it’s come from, especially buying British produce wherever I can. I would prefer to save money elsewhere as our overall health stems largely from our nutrition.

ApplesOrangesBananas · 15/07/2024 13:01

And also not sure if this counts but I won’t skimp on a holiday, I would prefer not to go at all! I found that out the hard way.

Marlowandmerlot · 15/07/2024 13:05

Food. I will pay more for items that do not have upf ingredients.

Organic UK only produce veg box and is is better for our health and the environment.

Meat from Piper's farm. I prefer to eat meat that has been raised with high welfare. Also they do upf free sausages.

Dog food, we have researched and gone for a more expensive environmentally friendly brand that do good quality food.

Milk, we buy from a local milk vending station. Better for the environment and also it is non homogenised and tastes so much better than supermarket milk.

yumyum33 · 15/07/2024 13:22

I buy my meat and poultry from Pipers Farm and it's from animals that have been treated well, are pasture fed and not pumped full of steroids and antibiotics. It's costly but you can taste the difference.

I will only use Kleenex - better than all the rest.

I wear Sloggi pants, worth the extra money. Pairs that are ten years old still look relatively new.

I wear alpaca wool socks, summer and winter. They feel just fabulous inside shoes.

Only Giesswein Austrian merino wool slippers. Once you've worn a pair then that's all you want.

yumyum33 · 15/07/2024 13:24

@marlowandmerlot

I see you also buy from Pipers Farm. Aren't they wonderful! Food as it is meant to taste.

I note you source good dog food too. I had been getting the Farmer's Dog chubbs from Pipers Farm for my poodle. What else can you recommend?

moomoomeow · 15/07/2024 13:31

Toilet (and facial tissue) paper.

GameOfJones · 15/07/2024 13:33

Oneearringlost · 15/07/2024 12:22

Can I ask which memory foam mattress you bought? And that you can unequivocally recommend?

It is from Emma. We've had it about 5 years now and it's still perfect.

Napolina tinned tomatoes. During Covid my usual own brand tinned ones were substituted in the home delivery and I couldn’t believe the difference when I cooked with the posh ones. I’ve not gone back to own brand ones since.

Try San Morzano tinned tomatoes. Bit pricier, but far superior to Napolina!

Yes, dropped shoulder seams, a curved back hem that falls just below my bum. Long sleeves that fall halfway down my hands.

I wear it all the time. I've just debobbled it for the first time, but still haven't washed it.

It's the most fantastic jumper, only downside is that I have to wear it with a cape as I can't get The sleeves into a coat!

Matalan bras are pretty good, honestly I'd never spend that much on a bra ever again. It was to go under my wedding outfit so needed something decent - I bought the suck me in chest high pants as well but I will say they have been worth the money.

unsync · 15/07/2024 14:00

Birkenstocks. I can't bring myself to buy anything else as they are just so comfy for my footshape. I have sandals, boots and trainers from them. Just got some of the EVA ones for pool use too. I only wish they cost what they used to twenty years ago.

@Seeline IME even hi juice squash has sweeteners. Is there one that doesn't?

Belvoir cordials only use sugar. I buy the blackcurrant and the ginger ones. Rock also only use sugar but the Belvoir ones are best.

Mammma91 · 15/07/2024 14:04

Perfume. I am allergic to the fake ones or I’d absolutely use the cheaper ones but I take quite a bad reaction.

I really need to know how you’re spending £75 a month on pies, and why you’re boycotting M&S @Limth

CutthroatDruTheViolent · 15/07/2024 14:10

It's nice when you get to a point where you can afford the 'nicer' versions of things. I say that genuinely btw, we've got there after a loooong time on the breadline, a long time of buying the cheapest options and scraping together the pennies to be able to have a day out with the kids.

I've never scrimped on cheese though Grin

We always buy Walkers crisps and proper Coke, although I'm trying to cut that out of my diet. It's no good.

leeverarch · 15/07/2024 14:12

Cheese - specifically strong mature cheddar.
