Is Gin & Tonic posh?!

Out for drinks with dh & two other couples. Dhs friend buys first round, I asked for a g&t in which he replies... "oooh very posh" other wives were drinking wine.
So is g&t posh? This wasn't a "craft" fashionable gin just gordons & schweeps!

Love my G& T, so refreshing, delicious to whet the appetite before dinner or anytime really ........ but why oh why have they this nonsense about serving it in a huge balloon shaped glass that I can't hold properly or drink easily from!! DH knows to always order for me with an automatic "in a regular tall glass or tumbler please" added!!

Ooh I prefer it in a red wine glass so it doesn't get warm from my hands, and you can get more in!

Gin was mothers ruin as the saying used to go. Also the Hogarth picture of Gin Alley. Drink for the poor.

Not nonsense. The reason is space for increased surface area for ice to make contact with the drink and keep it at the optimum temperature. And there is supposed to be a good amount of ice for the same reason.

I loathe those bloody glasses; I can't wait for that stupid fashion to end. A good quality heavy tumbler is much better

Craft gin and fever tree = posh. Recent gin trend
Gordon's and Schweppes = working class. Very 90s

I would say that the craft gin and fevertree went through its ‘nice / fashionable / trendy’ phase a few years ago. Now it’s served in massive balloon glasses with half a tonne of ice it’s very much a tacky drink at the ‘live, laugh, love’ end of the spectrum IMO. Which is a shame. A decent gin and tonic in a highball is a much more reliable drink than wine in most bars and, given the increasing strength of even white wine, with a decent amount of tonic lower alcohol as well.

Aperol spritz has also lost its popularity, used to be very trendy.
I read Kate M likes a g&t!

Not in Italy. It doesnt have Prosecco in aperol often and cost 2 euro or less.

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 14/07/2024 20:38

Aperol is particularly rank 🤢

I'm a craft gin maker! Schweppes is definitely the best mixer and really enhances the gin botanicals. Fever tree etc come with their own blend of botanicals and drown out the flavour profile of the gin

Gordons is an excellent gin. A true classic London dry. Uncomplicated. It's actually my go to on a hot summer day.

Let's try that again... (Gin Lane, by Hogarth. Do they look posh?)

No it's not, it's been a staple drink for a long time! I would like to like g and t, those big round glasses look so refreshing! Me, a pint or wine lol 😆

GettingStuffed · 14/07/2024 23:02

To me I still get amazed when men order a G&T . I see it as a woman's drink. I am a beer drinker, although I need to be careful with the amount nowadays, and was shocked to the core when I went on a date in around 1985 , I ordered a pint and he ordered a G&T ,bi got his drink and he had mine, soon swapped.

MrsSkylerWhite · 14/07/2024 23:05

Days gone by it was called mothers’ ruin. Lots of graphic drawings by Hogarth demonstrating why.

circular2478 · 14/07/2024 23:26

I don't think G&t is posh. I'm currently drinking a Gordon's with sweppes tonic and a splash of soda water with lime and cucumber. I get a 3 monthlg craft gin box (posh gin) but I do actually prefer Gordon's.

Damnloginpopup · 15/07/2024 08:38

Good to see Hogarth. Gin Lane and Beer Street are really a fantastic Google rabbit hole to go down! Get them up big screen and really look at them!

Gin was the scourge of the poor back in the old days and therefore a problem for the ruling classes. It made people very, very bad. Unlike beer which made people very, very good 🤣 apparently.

My grandfather liked a whisky. He derided men who drank G&T as it was a 'womens drink' according to my dad. However, his Commanding Officer during the war drank G&T and they were lifelong friends so perhaps it wasn't such a big deal for him 😁 G&T was also for the RAF (he was Army). I do however have many photographs of fighter pilots enjoying beer...and one contemporary text (Spitfire Pilot by David Crook) mentions him and another pilot landing at a different airfield in the middle of the Battle of Britain, having their Spitfires refuelled and rearmed read for the next sortie and wandering off to the Mess for a pint of Pimm's 🤣 now THAT is posh!!!

Nb spoons is excellent for G&T. Well cheap, great range, lots of ice. And certainly in my town it's not posh, just normal.
