Is Gin & Tonic posh?!

Out for drinks with dh & two other couples. Dhs friend buys first round, I asked for a g&t in which he replies... "oooh very posh" other wives were drinking wine.
So is g&t posh? This wasn't a "craft" fashionable gin just gordons & schweeps!

Used to be but not any more, gin is hugely popular now. I don't like it though.

LoobyDoop2 · 14/07/2024 12:54

No. Especially not if you have any word art relating to it, and especially if the word art is displayed alongside multiple bottles of the stuff.

Not posh = Gordon's and Schwepps.

Posh = Latest herbal botanical gin containing tincture of stinging nettles, parsnips and strawberries grown by trained Llamas in the foothills of the Andes and Fever Tree tonic water.

Indeed. 'Mother's Ruin' / bathtub Victorian drink of the masses gets exceptionally successful re-brand !

Craft gin and fever tree = posh. Recent gin trend
Gordon's and Schweppes = working class. Very 90s

I think it was seen as posh, in a 'have a G&T in the clubhouse after a round of golf, before getting in the Jag and driving back home to the good lady wife,' type of way. Not so much now.

quockerwodger · 14/07/2024 10:08

G&t is a classic every man drink.

I'd say Wine is way posher.

Depends on the wine. Blossom Hill definitely less posh. Lafite posher.

frozendaisy · 14/07/2024 13:21

Both wine and G&T can be "posh"

More about how you consume the booze not what it actually is.

No, and Gordon's is positively downmarket.
But what is this obsession on here with things being "posh", and why is that a bad thing? Surely most people aspire to the finer things in life?

Putting · 14/07/2024 13:31

I’m sure I remember some of the characters from Coronation Street ordering gin and tonic back in the day, and I’m not sure they would have been described as “posh” at the time,

I started drinking G&T in Australia in the mid 80s. It would be served in a short glass and always with ice and a slice of lemon. On my first visit to the UK I was presented with a wine glass with room temperature disgusting slimline tonic, no ice or lemon. I was so disappointed! That was definitely not posh.

But on subsequent visits I was delighted to see the explosion in popularity with a rainbow of gins, different flavours of tonic, a choice of garnish all served in beautiful balloon glasses. That feels a lot more posh. Gordon’s and Schweppes, not so much!

ginasevern · 14/07/2024 14:18

Gin & tonic was considered sophisticated up until around the mid 70's. The average bloke drank beer and women would have a sweet martini or port and lemonade. Gin and tonic acquired its upmarket reputation because it was the drink of Empire. English colonials would be served it by servants on their verandas in India. When the 1930's came along there was a craze for cocktails amongst the "it" crowd and gin and tonic was assimilated into that. So it was still the preserve of the wealthy and fashionable.

I'm in my late sixties and can remember when G&T was thought to be a bit special but I'm amazed OP's friends still think it is.

I've tried some posh Gins and Gordon's is definitely the best with any type of mixer , expensive or supermarket own brand . Ice and a slice , lovely.

Gordon’s……the best gin….really? Noooooo

During lockdown we got invited to a few online gin events- they sent you gin and then did a webinar type thing

1- I think it might have been Sipsmiths (but not totally sure- might have been fever tree or one of the many others that we accessed) said that Gordons and Schweppes was a really decent drink that was wrongly being dismissed by people.

My Grandparents were British Army based overseas for 30 years and made tonic from quinine, soda fountain and citric acid long after they were back in the UK.

It was Vodka tonic
Rita, Bet Lynch and the hairdresser from Rent a Ghost.

It was to show that they were not sophisticated.

frozendaisy · 14/07/2024 14:57

Gordon's was the Queen's favourite gin. She was top posh.

Nellieinthebarn · 14/07/2024 14:58

Not posh. Very mainstream.

And the Queen Mother liked a Dubonnet and lemonade, so the really posh have what they like, and do not give a tinkers about anyone else's opinion!

The height of posh is probably having a Babycham and Guinness and dipping your chips in it in the Royal Enclosure at Ascot!

WTAFisthisnonsense · 14/07/2024 15:06

I can safely say that I would rather have a g&t from the Henley Distillery than Pimms. 😉

maimeo · 14/07/2024 15:08

Love my G& T, so refreshing, delicious to whet the appetite before dinner or anytime really ........ but why oh why have they this nonsense about serving it in a huge balloon shaped glass that I can't hold properly or drink easily from!! DH knows to always order for me with an automatic "in a regular tall glass or tumbler please" added!!
