Bank Holiday Monday on 15th July, if England win the Euros on Sunday 14th July? Surely they can't do this can they?!

I know lots of people (In England moreso,) want a National Day of Celebration if England win the Euros this Sunday 14th July. Apparently, in the form of a Bank Holiday the next day - Monday 15th July!

Surely they can't do this/won't do this?! Not the next day after the Euro24 final?!

It's too short notice for many people. I personally have a hospital appointment on Monday - at 11am, one I've been waiting for, for 5 months!

Also, our car is booked in for its MOT on Monday. Our MOT runs out on 22nd July and the garage has a 3 week waiting list for MOTs, so we won't be able to rebook it and get it done in time, if the garage decides to not open. (We have had the MOT booked in since the middle of June! DH is taking it in - in the morning whilst I am at the hospital.) I am getting a bus to the hospital, it's only 5 stops and 10 minutes. Will the bus times be affected?

My cousin has a dental appointment. That was booked in early May - a crown preparation. She has the follow up on 30th July to have the crown fitted!

AND my neighbour's 19 y.o. son has his driving test! At 2pm!

In short, so many people will have pre-booked things (general appointments, job interviews, driving tests, medical appointments, driving lessons, eye tests, routine surgery and check-ups, work related things and work booked in (like hairdressers, builders, mechanics, tradespeople etc...) All sorts! They can't just foist a bank holiday on us with virtually ZERO notice surely? Confused

NC for this in case people think I'm a bit batshit! Blush

we wont win
so people will have to go into work/school on time, but still hungover from drowning their sorrows

If we didn't have a bank holiday when the women's team won it would be poor form to suddenly have one if the men's team won.

And just thinking logically, no sane government is going to call a bank holiday at no notice. The ramifications would be immense.

It's quite important to learn to rise above the frothing on social media and in tabloid papers and think rationally. COVID was a good example of people collectively losing their minds (see: captain tom, clapping on doorsteps, judging people for going for more than one walk a day etc)

Thank you Lots of good points there.

I don't think England are going to win. Assuming they lose I really hope Spain win in 90 minutes, everyone staying up for extra time and penalties only to be disappointed would make for a terrible Monday (also I need to get to sleep early to watch House of the Dragon at 7am).

To answer you question - yes you are being batshit! 😀 you've given this non existent (on Monday) possibility way too much headspace!!

Thank you! Grin I know I'm being a bit batshit, and I can see a few posters think I'm dotty. 😆

I think I knew dep down when I wrote it, that a bank holiday the day AFTER the match would be untenable, but I just read it/saw it/heard it SO many times this past few days, and it did put a seed of worrying in my head. So I just wanted to put the feelers out and see what the very sensible, intelligent folk of mumsnet thought. Smile

I have to say, though, to the few people that are saying 'you're ridiculous to believe what you see on the Internet,' it wasn't just 'the Internet.' I saw it on ITV1, Channel 4, and BBC. And even Keir Starmer said he wouldn't rule out the idea of a bank holiday (if England won the Euros!) when he was asked a couple of days ago. I actually heard him say it.... Although he didn't actually say it would be the day after, to be fair.

I mean, there might be a small chance that they have a bank holiday Monday to commemorate it later on - eg on the 29th of July - or the 5th of August (like several weeks after the final - if we win!) But they will absolutely have to do it for the womens game next year as well. (If they win!)

Thank you so much everyone, even the ones who've been a little bit 'cruel to be kind' and harsh. 😬 I appreciate all the responses. You've made me realise how ridiculous I'm being - and how I am worrying for nothing. I think there's pretty much a 100% chance that it isn't going to be bank holiday on Monday 15th July!

Have a lovely Saturday everyone! Fingers crossed for our lads tomorrow! Grin

Starmer can't declare a bank holiday with 2 hours notice. He's not Colonel Gaddafi!!
Why do the schools need to open later?
I have no recollection anything like this when England won the World Cup 😬

HelpMeGetThrough · 13/07/2024 11:07

Even Keir Starmer didn't confirm or deny it yesterday when asked!

He may have only been Prime Minister for a week, but if we win, he can't suddenly pop up on TV and say "lie in tomorrow, it's a bank holiday".

He doesn't have sole power to do that.

And you know that how?

Unless you have some way of interfering with a future event that isn't connected to any past events clearly you dont know the outcome

They may win, they may not but no one can know which of those will happen today

Hopefully someone will advise Starmer that doing it for the men, but not for the women 2 yrs ago, will not go down well.

I can't see how that argument would work though. He wasn't the prime minister then and his party wasn't in charge of making decisions.
Apparently KS did ask about a Bh for the women's football team 2 years ago.

I still can't imagine them giving a BH for this however.

school starting late is not exactly helpful to working parents either

Where I have seen this happening the schools are also open at normal time too. It's just that the register won't close until,10/10:30am u=instead of at 9am. So no late mark for a child who has a bit of a lie in.

It reduces the risk of having a bad day with regards late/absent pupils.

But it's also totally optional.

The teachers will there at normal time for those who drop off at normal time.

@Sethera I don't think we did have a bank holiday for the Queen's funeral. It took place on a Saturday iirc. We did get one for the King's coronation which took place some 8 months later.

You're incorrect - it took place on 19 September 2022, which was a Monday, and it was a public holiday.

Notreat · 13/07/2024 16:48

No of course not. If they win and have a bank holiday it will be later on.
I hope they don't have a bank holiday though I don't think it's necessary and there wasn't one when the Women's football team won.

TonTonMacoute · 13/07/2024 17:22

I think it's absolutely fucking ridiculous. People need to grow up.

(I loathe football, so this might colour my opinion slightly)

Cattenberg · 13/07/2024 17:26

I agree with you OP. I’m all for another bank holiday, but not at short notice. I was one of the people whose hospital appointment was cancelled due to the Queen’s funeral and at the time, I was really annoyed.

x2boys · 13/07/2024 17:30

How would that even work ?
If they win we will only know from around 10 ,or later depending on extra time etc ,that's not enough time to shut schools etc.

it is unlikely imo
