Bank Holiday Monday on 15th July, if England win the Euros on Sunday 14th July? Surely they can't do this can they?!

I know lots of people (In England moreso,) want a National Day of Celebration if England win the Euros this Sunday 14th July. Apparently, in the form of a Bank Holiday the next day - Monday 15th July!

Surely they can't do this/won't do this?! Not the next day after the Euro24 final?!

It's too short notice for many people. I personally have a hospital appointment on Monday - at 11am, one I've been waiting for, for 5 months!

Also, our car is booked in for its MOT on Monday. Our MOT runs out on 22nd July and the garage has a 3 week waiting list for MOTs, so we won't be able to rebook it and get it done in time, if the garage decides to not open. (We have had the MOT booked in since the middle of June! DH is taking it in - in the morning whilst I am at the hospital.) I am getting a bus to the hospital, it's only 5 stops and 10 minutes. Will the bus times be affected?

My cousin has a dental appointment. That was booked in early May - a crown preparation. She has the follow up on 30th July to have the crown fitted!

AND my neighbour's 19 y.o. son has his driving test! At 2pm!

In short, so many people will have pre-booked things (general appointments, job interviews, driving tests, medical appointments, driving lessons, eye tests, routine surgery and check-ups, work related things and work booked in (like hairdressers, builders, mechanics, tradespeople etc...) All sorts! They can't just foist a bank holiday on us with virtually ZERO notice surely? Confused

NC for this in case people think I'm a bit batshit! Blush

Even discussing this in advance is likely to put the kybosh on it. Why not wait and see whether we do actually win?

Latenightreader · 13/07/2024 08:44

Can't happen - there are contract implications for lots of people - I get paid at a higher rate for a BH plus toil (I queried it when I saw my contract - in reality I'm unlikely to work a BH) and my department just couldn't afford to pay me plus colleagues, or to lose the time.

The logistics are impossible.

AppleKatie · 13/07/2024 08:46

It’s not going to happen.

however, I would worry about your MOT getting done, something tells me more than a few garages will be er unexpectedly short staffed on monday

BigcatLittlecat · 13/07/2024 08:50

They won't win anyway! They have played poorly and been very very lucky! Spain will beat them!

Willmafrockfit · 13/07/2024 08:51

Lamine Yamal might have something to say about the prospect!

Conparing the organisation of a country wide no notice bank holiday to a global pandemic is ridiculous

A micro seconds consideration would tell anyone that logistically it couldn't possibly happen. It's so daft it doesn't even warrant asking

And if a person did believe it they might be well advised to step away from the crazy areas of the internet

Exactly. Every day I'm completely astonished when people believe that something could be true 'because they read it on the internet'.

Anybody can write anything they like but unless its from a credible source, which obviously excludes forums, most media outlets and social media unless it's the site belonging to an official or reputable source, then you shouldn't believe it unless you can independently verify it.

I could say that as well as there being a BH on Monday, it will be illegal to leave the house unless you wear the winning team's replica kit and the only drink you can consume is lager brewed in that country.

It's never going to be true, but there would probably be at least one thread on here asking where to get kit at short notice, how wasteful it is if you don't already have it, what about people who can't afford to buy it, complaints about nasty polyester from the natural fibres brigade etc etc.

a little off topic, but anyone living in Jersey will get a bank holiday on Monday to mark the king’s visit. Very well timed for them!

It's a public holiday on Monday in Glasgow, but I've not heard of many people planning celebrations Grin

Willmafrockfit · 13/07/2024 09:02

a public holiday in glasgow?
whats that for?
glasgow fair google tells me

Firdbeeder · 13/07/2024 09:05

An extra bank holiday has definitely been discussed but logistically there’s no way it could take place on Monday 15th, the literal day after the match. That doesn’t stop the Reach media type ‘journalistic’ outlets winding people up with nonsense headlines and ideas they’ve made up in their own head though…

school starting late is not exactly helpful to working parents either

DinnaeFashYersel · 13/07/2024 09:43

Nice as that would be.

It's not going to happen.

Plus can you think of the stink that would create either Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Are there actually schools locking the doors to children at their normal start time?

Hopefully someone will advise Starmer that doing it for the men, but not for the women 2 yrs ago, will not go down well.

He was on record at the time as saying we should do it for the women's win.

I do think that's a problem, it's a bit divisive. England/Scotland/NI have different bank holidays to start with so that's not such a big deal, but Wales and England share their BHs.

No. The schools are saying the kids don't HAVE to come in at 8.30-9am, and can come in at 10am, but they can come in earlier if they want. The doors will still be open early. Smile

@Sethera I don't think we did have a bank holiday for the Queen's funeral. It took place on a Saturday iirc. We did get one for the King's coronation which took place some 8 months later.

AlwaysFreezing · 13/07/2024 10:19

Theres no chance of an official bh on Monday. But I wouldn't be surprised if there was a sort of unofficial one, half the country will be phoning in sick!

So I think it's wise to check all appointments due to take place on Monday before you set off.

Exactly, which is obvious but we have posters aauning that working parents wil be tuck with their children until 10am, this thread is a bit bonkers 😂

I know it's bonkers, and it's all my fault. 😆

Of course that's not going to happen. The grown ups are in charge again so don't worry.

I didn't actually realise we had a bank holiday for the Queen's funeral. I know we had a double bank holiday for the Platinum Jubilee. And I think we had one for the King's Coronation. Did we? Honestly I have forgotten! 😬

If we didn't have a bank holiday when the women's team won it would be poor form to suddenly have one if the men's team won.

And just thinking logically, no sane government is going to call a bank holiday at no notice. The ramifications would be immense.

It's quite important to learn to rise above the frothing on social media and in tabloid papers and think rationally. COVID was a good example of people collectively losing their minds (see: captain tom, clapping on doorsteps, judging people for going for more than one walk a day etc)

Miley1967 · 13/07/2024 10:51

I really don't think we will have another BH. There is one at the end of August anyway.
