Bank Holiday Monday on 15th July, if England win the Euros on Sunday 14th July? Surely they can't do this can they?!

I know lots of people (In England moreso,) want a National Day of Celebration if England win the Euros this Sunday 14th July. Apparently, in the form of a Bank Holiday the next day - Monday 15th July!

Surely they can't do this/won't do this?! Not the next day after the Euro24 final?!

It's too short notice for many people. I personally have a hospital appointment on Monday - at 11am, one I've been waiting for, for 5 months!

Also, our car is booked in for its MOT on Monday. Our MOT runs out on 22nd July and the garage has a 3 week waiting list for MOTs, so we won't be able to rebook it and get it done in time, if the garage decides to not open. (We have had the MOT booked in since the middle of June! DH is taking it in - in the morning whilst I am at the hospital.) I am getting a bus to the hospital, it's only 5 stops and 10 minutes. Will the bus times be affected?

My cousin has a dental appointment. That was booked in early May - a crown preparation. She has the follow up on 30th July to have the crown fitted!

AND my neighbour's 19 y.o. son has his driving test! At 2pm!

In short, so many people will have pre-booked things (general appointments, job interviews, driving tests, medical appointments, driving lessons, eye tests, routine surgery and check-ups, work related things and work booked in (like hairdressers, builders, mechanics, tradespeople etc...) All sorts! They can't just foist a bank holiday on us with virtually ZERO notice surely? Confused

NC for this in case people think I'm a bit batshit! Blush

I think a/ very unlikely a bh would be announced with about 2 hours notice, and b/ it's unlikely we'll win anyway, so I wouldn't worry about it

Personally, I'd be thrilled with a bh on Monday, but I appreciate zero chance of it happening

PalmelaHanderson · 12/07/2024 20:55

SMH at the ignorance of some people

No, if it happens (which I doubt) I should think it will coincide with the team's homecoming, or else they'll tack it onto the existing August holiday.

I'm not into football but it surprises me that those who are are counting their chickens like this - if it was something I cared about I'd never risk jinxing it like that 😂

Yeah, someone I spoke to on Twitter said if they DID do it, they might just announce it for a couple of weeks time, like 29th July - to give people plenty of notice, and so people can rebook things if they need to.

even 2 weeks' notice would not be enough

Apparently.

Great answer 😂

Much as I'd like to say he could win, it is extremely unlikely! Even if we do, there will be no bank holiday on the 15th, I promise you.

There might be some schools and workplaces starting late, but I don't think that happened when the women won, did it?

No. Nothing at all when the women won. I don't think they should do anything for the men either really. That's JMO.

You are not daft! The media love to jump on something and whip us all up into a frenzy

That was roughly what we got for Queen Elizabeth's funeral (I appreciate that was a far more momentous occasion, but pointing it out for comparison of logistics).

People want a lot of things doesn't mean it's happening, do you always believe everything you're told?

Sophiesaph24 · 12/07/2024 21:06

Hopefully someone will advise Starmer that doing it for the men, but not for the women 2 yrs ago, will not go down well.

TakeOnFlea · 12/07/2024 21:07

"Hopefully someone will advise Starmer that doing it for the men, but not for the women 2 yrs ago, will not go down well."

And how exactly could he have done it, or anything, 2 years ago?

Give me fucking strength 🤣

YouveGotAFastCar · 12/07/2024 21:07

It wouldn’t be the 15th. It’d be the parade weekend a few weeks later.

Keir had seemed in favour, but our economy can’t really take the loss and the women didn’t get one, so I don’t think it’ll happen.

Have you got a link to where the media are promoting this?

The women won the Euros at the end of July so schools were already on holiday. Workplaces can do what they want I guess.

Starmer was asked by some useless tosser of a journo and gave a vague answer but clearly meant no.

Seriously, just google 'bank holiday for Euros.' It's all over the internet, and was even mentioned on the news yesterday.

So there aren't any official media sources promoting it then. Thought not

It's just men's football, so no, I don't think they will. They didn't even do it when the women's team won.

BBC news interviewed Keir Starmer yesterday and he didn't confirm or deny it.

They are 'official!' And all those links were from pretty official sources. Confused

Anyway, I get it, it's very unlikely to happen, no need to make me feel or look any more stupid. 😩
