Bank Holiday Monday on 15th July, if England win the Euros on Sunday 14th July? Surely they can't do this can they?!

I know lots of people (In England moreso,) want a National Day of Celebration if England win the Euros this Sunday 14th July. Apparently, in the form of a Bank Holiday the next day - Monday 15th July!

Surely they can't do this/won't do this?! Not the next day after the Euro24 final?!

It's too short notice for many people. I personally have a hospital appointment on Monday - at 11am, one I've been waiting for, for 5 months!

Also, our car is booked in for its MOT on Monday. Our MOT runs out on 22nd July and the garage has a 3 week waiting list for MOTs, so we won't be able to rebook it and get it done in time, if the garage decides to not open. (We have had the MOT booked in since the middle of June! DH is taking it in - in the morning whilst I am at the hospital.) I am getting a bus to the hospital, it's only 5 stops and 10 minutes. Will the bus times be affected?

My cousin has a dental appointment. That was booked in early May - a crown preparation. She has the follow up on 30th July to have the crown fitted!

AND my neighbour's 19 y.o. son has his driving test! At 2pm!

In short, so many people will have pre-booked things (general appointments, job interviews, driving tests, medical appointments, driving lessons, eye tests, routine surgery and check-ups, work related things and work booked in (like hairdressers, builders, mechanics, tradespeople etc...) All sorts! They can't just foist a bank holiday on us with virtually ZERO notice surely? Confused

NC for this in case people think I'm a bit batshit! Blush

How do you know about all these appointments are happening for other people?! I barely know what's going on in my own life let alone my cousin's!

I'd love a bank holiday though.

So there aren't any official media sources promoting it then. Thought not

👏You must be a delight at dinner parties

"Hopefully someone will advise Starmer that doing it for the men, but not for the women 2 yrs ago, will not go down well."

And how exactly could he have done it, or anything, 2 years ago?

Give me fucking strength 🤣

I know Starmer couldn’t have given it, but the PM of the day could!

What does it say about how the government views any sport other than men’s football, if we have a BH for men winning the Euros, but we didn’t for the women, we didn’t when men won the Rugby World Cup, or men won the Ashes etc.

DancefloorAcrobatics · 12/07/2024 21:19

😁 I wouldn't mind having Monday off ...

Realistically not gonna happen!
It's a bloody sports competition... we don't get any extra time off for the Olympics or Tour the France and not to forget Wimbledon!

RobinHood19 · 12/07/2024 21:19

It won’t happen. It hasn’t ever happened in recent history for other countries. My own country has won a fair share of big titles in say the last 2 decades (euros, world cups, etc) and not once has a bank holiday been declared because it doesn’t work like that. I doubt the law would allow a bank holiday to be announced with 1-2 hours notice (given how the match will end just before midnight on the 15th).

Were we all hungover / sleep deprived the next day at work and school? Sure. But people just got on with it and the country didn’t descend into anarchy because someone kicked a ball successfully into a net (and I say this as a massive football fan!).

Thanks @EasterIssland Smile

No worries. I’m Spanish so regardless of the outcome I hope I don’t have to work on monday 😂 but really doubt there will be a BH with such short notice as someone said it costs billions to the country+ the side effects of cancelling things

You are not daft! The media love to jump on something and whip us all up into a frenzy

Come on, of course it's daft,to think that at 10pm on a Sunday some one (who?) would organise a bank holiday to start 2 hours later.

It's stupidly in the extreme 😂

CoastalCalm · 12/07/2024 21:23

The reason it’s been raised is down to Starmer attempting to shame the Tory government into a bank holiday for the lionesses - basically point scoring and now they’ve turned it back on him.

If there were to be a bank holiday it would be in a few weeks

Thanks @CoastalCalm Yeah that would be more likely and more sensible. Smile

Things are unbelievable until they happen. Global pandemic anyone?

The sheer quantity of information that we are overloaded with 24 hours a day can make it hard to distinguish fact from fiction. And that's before we get onto to Russian bots firing out fake news.

We don't have laugh at people for asking a question though.

Thank you so much. Blush

I know I am probably coming across at silly/daft etc, but it's just that I have seen this in the media now - and heard it, like a dozen times over 2-3 days, and it's just played on my mind a bit. I do feel a bit better now. (Now that pretty much everyone on this thread has said no, don't be daft, of course not, they wouldn't/couldn't do this at such short notice!) Smile

It's just a bloody football game

Nobody got any time off when the women's team won a while back

This 😂

CedarFence · 12/07/2024 21:38

I think they will win because that mystic who foretells the future by interpreting bunches of asparagus was on channel 5 and she said they would

CookieCrumbles23 · 12/07/2024 21:40

saveforthat · 12/07/2024 20:43

We won't win so don't worry

😂😂 that’s the spirit 😜

(probably correct though)

Sorry, I am old enough to have watched the 1966 world cup final. I do try to remain optimistic but so many disappointments since.

Magicmonster · 12/07/2024 22:00

a little off topic, but anyone living in Jersey will get a bank holiday on Monday to mark the king’s visit. Very well timed for them!

Magicmonster · 12/07/2024 22:01

Also more on point, I am pretty sure that parliament have to pass a law for any additional bank holidays and they won’t be doing that at 11pm on Sunday night

Conparing the organisation of a country wide no notice bank holiday to a global pandemic is ridiculous

A micro seconds consideration would tell anyone that logistically it couldn't possibly happen. It's so daft it doesn't even warrant asking

And if a person did believe it they might be well advised to step away from the crazy areas of the internet

Gingerdancedbackwards · 13/07/2024 08:35

Any excuse not to work. It's only the Euros. Not the world cup, not olympics, a few european teams
But I hope they win!!

Cardencallr · 13/07/2024 08:38

To answer you question - yes you are being batshit! 😀 you've given this non existent (on Monday) possibility way too much headspace!!
