I've not seen another thread on this. I'm just so relieved that the judge gave Gavin Plumb a life sentence for the plan to kidnap rape and kill Holly Willoughby. I am also relieved that he will be out of circulation for at least 15 years.

I'm glad he's been brought to justice, but it seems mad that there are actual convicted rapists who have been sentenced to way less than that.

IncompleteSenten · 12/07/2024 17:28

Good. She must feel very relieved.

I hope it will be cited as precedent (or whatever the legal term is) in future cases of men making credible plans to abduct and kill women. That would be a HUGE step forward.

LiterallyOnFire · 12/07/2024 17:30

Shame it wasn't a whole life tariff. I don't remember ever hearing "the details are so horrific they can't be made public" before, and it wasn't his first offence.

Perfect28 · 12/07/2024 17:31

What does a 'life sentence' even mean.

Probably about 8 years.

I do not disagree with rapists getting convicted and locked uo, but having listened to the entire sentencing speech by the judge today, I am convinced that Plumb is an exceedingly dangerous person. I hope the Parole board in 15 years think very long and hard before letting him out.

I think it means you do a few years in prison then are conditionally released and for the rest of your life you can be recalled to prison if you break the terms of your release.

That's my layman's understanding so I may be wrong.

Hermitreader · 12/07/2024 17:36

Kedece · 12/07/2024 17:32

Probably about 8 years.

In this case he's been given life with minimum 16 years less the time served on remand. The defence KC was minimising right to the end. Had a life sentence not been given then the sentence would have been 24 years of which he would have served 2/3 ie the 16 years set as his minimum.

In his case he will serve minimum 16 years (minus remand time served). Only then can the Parole board consider letting him out on licence. He can be recalled to prison at any time if he breaks the conditions of the licence.

Sick and tired of VAWG. I’m glad he’s received a 16y minimum term.

Weird incel.

He got 16 to run until parole hearing

TurtleTackle · 12/07/2024 17:40

What about the girls before holly that didn't get justice?
A suspended sentence?
Yet because, Holly is a "celebrity" only now he is this massive danger to society ( which I absolutely agree with) but my point is, he was back then but only because Holly is in the spot light it has been taken seriously!
A life sentence for an "ATTEMPTED" act is an insult to those girls who got a verdict of suspended sentence to an already very dangerous man.
If it was taken seriously with the "mere mortals" then it wouldn't have happened to holly.
He obviously deserves a very harsh sentence as he's a sick disgusting individual but life for a crime that wasn't followed through?
Rapist, drug dealers and peados don't get as long and they really do ruin lives.

Wealthydormouse · 12/07/2024 17:42

My immediate instinct was that it should have been more and wondered if it would get re looked at . He is clearly dangerous . Interesting though that most posters aren’t thinking along the same lines .

Redshoeblueshoe · 12/07/2024 17:42

I think there is a lot that isn't being said. I was watching the judge doing the sentencing on TV, and it cut off, because whatever was being said was apparently too horrific.

Yes I heard the judge start to talk about his plan to abscond a neighbour as a dummy run before taking Holly. Then the feed cut out and BBC said it was due to legal reasons. There are things the broadcast media are not allowed to broadcast because it is too disgusting and horrific.

Yes I am quite horrified by the previous suspended sentences

TheFlis · 12/07/2024 17:53

It wasn’t just a one off plan to rape, it was the plan to murder or solicit an other person to murder, the ‘rehearsal’ plan etc.

Also the plan to take her family hostage to use as leverage. Finding a property to take her to and graphic detail of how he intended to dispose of the body after killing. That all adds up.

The new justice secretary today announced that prisoner will be released after serving 40% of their sentences if they behave well. (I think it's currently 50%.)

Not for violent crimes. Things like shoplifting, speeding non payment of fines etc

But as I understand it, this will not be in relation to violent crimes, domestic abuse or threatening behaviour for people who are a risk to society. More white collar crimes?

Not relevant to a case like this because a life sentence has been handed down, not a specific length sentence.

He had a lot of previous history. This incident was an escalation. Off with goolies imo or just leave him in a desert with a bottle of ass lube.

This. Absolutely this.
He was directly threatening to the woman on the train ( thank goodness she didn't go with him) and he just got a suspended sentence. Little people ( especially women) don't count.
