I've not seen another thread on this. I'm just so relieved that the judge gave Gavin Plumb a life sentence for the plan to kidnap rape and kill Holly Willoughby. I am also relieved that he will be out of circulation for at least 15 years.

He had a lot of previous history. This incident was an escalation. Off with goolies imo or just leave him in a desert with a bottle of ass lube.

I've heard that castration (chemical or physical) doesn't necessarily make predatory men less so?
I don't know what the answer is but if I was the intended victim I think I would want to flay him alive.

I also can't believe the suspended sentence for attempting to kidnap two different women while armed with a replica gun and rope. It's as if the justice system was saying, 'Well, you failed in your attempt to rape and murder these two women so we're setting you free to have another go.' Which he did, twice. I don't get the logic of the legal system treating someone leniently if they are thwarted in their attempt to commit the most serious of crimes. Failure does not mean a man isn't dangerous.

IIRC, over on the feminist board there was a discussion of a recent case where a man was given a suspended sentence for pulling a woman over in her car while pretending to be a police officer. He was found to have flashing blue lights in his car as well as handcuffs and a baseball bat. I'm guessing we'll be reading about some terrible crime he has committed in a few years time and there will no accountability for the people who think he was safe to be unleashed on women.

What about the girls before holly that didn't get justice?
A suspended sentence?
Yet because, Holly is a "celebrity" only now he is this massive danger to society ( which I absolutely agree with) but my point is, he was back then but only because Holly is in the spot light it has been taken seriously!
A life sentence for an "ATTEMPTED" act is an insult to those girls who got a verdict of suspended sentence to an already very dangerous man.
If it was taken seriously with the "mere mortals" then it wouldn't have happened to holly.
He obviously deserves a very harsh sentence as he's a sick disgusting individual but life for a crime that wasn't followed through?
Rapist, drug dealers and peados don't get as long and they really do ruin lives.

This. It probably wouldn't have even gone to court if this happened to a mere mortal.

I'm not sure I can agree with people being convicted when they haven't actually carried out a crime yet either.

Conspiracy is a crime in itself. By your logic Terrorists who plot to kill shouldn't be convicted 'because they haven't committed a crime yet? .Anyone who followed the judge's summing up today would be left in no doubt that this man has been fairly convicted and thankfully a jury did their job properly and now a very dangerous individual is behind bars for quite some time.

I’ve been around long enough to have seen a lot of scary men jailed for awful crimes and their photos in the paper/on TV etc. But there is something about him that when I even see his photo, my blood runs cold. Evil pours from him.

What does a 'life sentence' even mean.

He will have a minimum term to serve before he can be considered for parole. He will be on licence once released and will be subject to certain conditions, if he breaches them he can be returned to prison.

Notsuchafattynow · 12/07/2024 18:31

I'd really recommend the podcast The Trial : series 5.

It covers the trial in more detail and helps explain how he was being accused of the plan, rather than the execution etc.

Also, the plot to kidnap, torture, rape and murder of Holly was an absolute escalation of his previous kidnapp attempts, so it's like comparing apples and pears when looking at sentencing of his earlier crimes.

There's also an interview with one of his previous kidnap victims, who comes across brilliantly, eloquently and shows amazing strength of character.

No. I don't agree that it's right to convict people on the presumption that they are going to do something. However unpalatable the planned crime. This is a dangerous precedent imo. He probably does deserve to be in prison but he could have backed out at the last minute. No one will know.

Especially when you've got the majority of grooming gangs not even being investigated let alone prosecuted, and the ones that do get ridiculously lenient sentences and then let out early .

My immediate instinct was that it should have been more and wondered if it would get re looked at . He is clearly dangerous . Interesting though that most posters aren’t thinking along the same lines .

No I agree, he should have got a higher minimum term. He will be out at 52, no doubt still being a danger to the public.

That said I can't believe he got a suspended sentence for his previous crimes. Those poor girls he tied up and the poor women he attempted to abduct off trains

Biggleslefae · 12/07/2024 19:21

I hadn't realised the extent to which he fits the incel stereotype.
I have an impulse to see him as pitiful (not wishing to condone him in any way shape of form) but a woman who was an overweight obsessive loner type wouldn't be fantasising about harming men like that.
(Yes I know, baby reindeer, even so not in the same league)

Notsuchafattynow · 12/07/2024 21:10

That was pretty much his defence, a sad, fat loser who was nothing more than a fantasist.

Apparently HW team fought hard to get his previous convictions presented to the jury, as often the defence team argues for it to be withheld. I think it helped the jury see past the harmless incel he pretended to be.

OhHelloMiss · 12/07/2024 21:22

There are a lot of people in prison for conspiracy

This guy is very likely to be a bit of a celeb himself ones he's settled in and known.

Pedallleur · 12/07/2024 21:25

That was his defence. Look at me, how heavy I am, I am just a fantasist. Clearly he wasn't and eventually he may have been successful. If he had access to firearms he would have used them. Long may he stay in jail.

The new justice secretary today announced that prisoner will be released after serving 40% of their sentences if they behave well. (I think it's currently 50%.)

Yes but not for life sentences. This new rule only applies to certain crimes and for people who are already close to their release dates, who only had a few months to serve.

lazzapazza · 16/07/2024 00:52

He sounds like a danger to society. Should never be let out.

CaliforniaChill · 16/07/2024 02:29

Wow, I just read the article by the woman he threatened and tried to kidnap off the train.

I hope his 16 years in jail are utterly miserable, and for whatever reason, he doesn’t make parole.
