Visiting York for the day soon, sorted for lunch and already a big fan of Betty's. What's everyone's favourite thing to do in York?

Which day are you going? With Bettys you want to get in the queue asap. There is the train museum or a river cruise

Namerchangee · 11/07/2024 17:32

Jorvik Viking centre, the minster and the York Ghost Merchants shop would be my top 3! If it’s a nice day a river cruise is also a nice idea.

Carelesswispalover · 11/07/2024 17:37

York dungeons, the museums (all of them), Jorvik, the bus tour, the minster, mooch about the lovely shops and cafes, the River cruise, the highlight for us was the ghost bus which was absolutely hilarious!
I love York!

hennybeans · 11/07/2024 17:40

Castle Museum if you like social history. Walk down the Shambles. Climb to the top of the Minster. Walk on the city walls. Stroll around Museum Gardens and down the river a bit.

UltramarineViolet · 11/07/2024 17:43

If it's a nice day then walking the city walls is a nice way to spend an hour or two

The castle museum is great too

FionnulaTheCooler · 11/07/2024 17:46

The chocolate experience is good and we enjoyed the open top bus tour. The Hole in Wand mini golf is worth a visit too.

cupcaske123 · 11/07/2024 17:48

A free guided tour of either the city or the cathedral.

cloudy477654 · 11/07/2024 17:51

We loved the castle museum

FloatyBoaty · 11/07/2024 17:52

I lived there for a few years- lovely city, as long as you’re not there on race day!

Recommend the railway museum (although big chunk closed for renovation, unfortunately) the Minster, it’s very beautiful. Walk on the city walls. A walk down fossgate for old book shops and vintage clothes. The Treasurers House behind York Minster (NT property) has a lovely tea room. Jorvik Viking center is fun.

Shybutrude · 11/07/2024 17:57

@Newtrix it's the John Smith's races this weekend, and more racing next weekend so most locals will be avoiding the city centre , also taxis will be more expensive when races on

Edited

When are these races on? I haven't heard of them before.

Thank you everyone, some fab ideas

Stonegate teddybear shop is lovely.
Agree with Yorvik Centre.
Also Yorkshire Soap company and Imaginarium (next to each other.)

Zoopet · 11/07/2024 18:20

*Jorvik.

MothralovesGojira · 11/07/2024 18:21

The York cat walk! A lovely way to see York on foot.
Also the open top sight seeing bus and there's also a night ghost bus - I think that it's still going? We also went to Dick Turpin's grave.

user1471538283 · 11/07/2024 18:23

The Minster was amazing! We got a York card so we could go in free to most places. We went to all the museums and the castle. We didn't go to Betty's but we went somewhere similar

We also trotted up The Shambles and ate at that fancy restaurant by the river. We got the bus to the shopping mall as well.

We go on a city vacation in the winter and see everything!

Toddlerteaplease · 11/07/2024 18:25

The Minster! My favourite place. I think Betty's is over hyped though.

Toddlerteaplease · 11/07/2024 18:27

I did a free walking tour, that was excellent.

SallyWD · 11/07/2024 18:30

We all loved the Chocolate Story!

Shybutrude · 11/07/2024 18:32

@Newtrix don't bother with the ghost shop on the shambles unless you want to stand for three hours plus to buy a crappy figure of a ghost that looks like a tampon

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 11/07/2024 18:45

River Cruise
Cat Trail
C&S bakery on Tower Street opposite Clifford's Tower
Just pottering about

herbaceous · 11/07/2024 18:53

Do one of the ghost walking tours in the evening.

Barley Hall! No one mentions it, but it's an amazing reconstruction of a medieval mansion right in the middle of town.

Afternoon tea in a railway carriage in the NRM was great a few years ago. Not sure if it's still happening.

Minster, including the undercroft. It's worth the money.

The walls, castle museum, museum gardens, Hole in Wand all great suggestions.

(For info I live here)

HelpMebeok · 11/07/2024 18:56

We love the chocolate experience. The open top bus tour is good as is the river cruise. There's lots of nice places to have a drink along the riverside

I did a free walking tour, that was excellent.

My ds used to give those tours when history student at uni some years ago.
they run a good system, tour guide is reliant on donation as well there’s no charge (eg people pay guide what they think it was worth ). so guides really do
Know they’re stuff and work hard on making it entertaining so at least some of people give them a donation
they used to start tours at minster - there was a sign there.

Not being funny but there are literally hundreds of threads about this.
