Adding thanks to comments. Be careful

Your name associated with your thanks may not be the name you used on the thread. MN were supposed to have fixed this but it seems to be still happening. Unless of course all the thanks are coming from posters who are not actually on the thread. I suggest that everyone check their user name before thanking anyone just to be sure. Just a heads up in case anyone wasn't aware. Have a look at the thread in site stuff for further info. Sorry I can't do links on phone but it should be easy to find.

I don't know about the past, but I think that is now prevented automatically. On the same thread, you cannot change the username.
However, some people said that it's possible to circumvent by being simultaneously logged in with different devices - that does not need to be with nefarious intentions, it could be someone logged in at home with a tablet and going out, posting on their phone.

You can change for a one off post on a thread you've already posted on by typing one of your old usernames into the username box. That is obviously always deliberate though.

Well, yes. Just because someone is articulate and has time to write doesn’t mean that everyone follows their views necessarily.

And if people see what comments are being ‘thanked’ you know what direction you need to take in your comment in reply. If a comment with 20 likes says ‘here is an interesting study I read about and there are some great comments below it that gave me food for thought’ then those ‘likes’ are worth more than the comment that says ‘all anti trans women are poo poo heads and I have nothing more to add’, even if that also got 20 ‘likes’.

No one can see the thanks other than the posters themselves

If you have posted on any given thread already, the 'thanks' DOES come from the name that you posted on the thread with. So I'm really not sure what you're on about @endofthelinefinally Confused

Yes I know, that’s why I was talking about having the number visible to everyone in my comment.

Another person who really doesn't understand how this is an issue.

You don't have to be the OP or even a thread contributor to thank someone, so how on earth are name changes obvious?

Plus also, does anyone really analyse the names of all of the people who have thanked them to see if they're on the thread? Surely that would take forever!!

How on earth do you get the names of the people who have thanked you ???

I can't do that.

I'm always willing to accept that MN have fucked up on anything relating to tech or privacy, but I don't think any of the logic on this thread about the Thanks function follows. I often thank without posting, and often have Thanks from people who haven't posted. MN is huge, I don't think that's surprising.

Agree it would be useful to display the number of likes but not the names.

MeAgainAndAgain · 10/07/2024 15:28

What do you all think about having downvotes too? Or is that too much like Reddit?

I am addicted enough to the Thanks button. If I could downvote I might never sleep or eat again...

Downvotes is a horrible idea. Creates discord and disharmony. Creates nasty little cliques, and favouritism, and bullying. And definitely do NOT let anyone else see the 'thanks' except the recipient.

What makes me cringe, and howl with laughter in equal measures, is when someone is having an argument with another poster, and one of them says 'well the amount of THANKS I have got tells me I'm right!' 😆 Like 'I got 8 'thanks' so I am more right than you!' Lame! 😩

You just know there's going to be some weird saddos who're sitting with a spreadsheet and different coloured felt tips trying to identify thanks patterns 😂

Yes, they do create issues on Reddit. And you get really similar comments in the same thread, some upvoted, some downvoted 🤷‍♀️.

HollyKnight · 10/07/2024 16:40

Most people use the "thanks" button as a "like" button. They're not actually thanking you for anything, they're just saying I like what you said. There are some people who "like" every post on certain threads. I really think people are overthinking it if they're looking at their thanks list and thinking some must be name changes just because they don't see a post by that name on the thread.

MN tech did say they would change it so that this would be the case. That is good to hear that they have done it. Thank you.

I can't do that.

Might depend on how you access the site.

I can just click on the little thanks icon below my post and it comes up with a list of the people who have "thanked" me. But it also comes through in my notifications, which probably depends on however the settings are configured.

@OpizpuHeuvHiyo
Thanks (😁) for explaining.
It seems a bit pointless. One of the things I like about MN is that it doesn't have likes, down votes etc.
I find the AIBU voting annoying enough as that doesn't work on the app either.

Oh the voting was getting on my nerves so I deleted that option too.
