Adding thanks to comments. Be careful

Your name associated with your thanks may not be the name you used on the thread. MN were supposed to have fixed this but it seems to be still happening. Unless of course all the thanks are coming from posters who are not actually on the thread. I suggest that everyone check their user name before thanking anyone just to be sure. Just a heads up in case anyone wasn't aware. Have a look at the thread in site stuff for further info. Sorry I can't do links on phone but it should be easy to find.

OP posts:
GoogleWhacked · 10/07/2024 14:03

I checked on my laptop and on old threads my thanks appear under the username I've used in that thread, not my current UN. On laptop, when you hover over thanks it says "this thanks will appear from UN"

Not sure if it's the same on app or mobile.

You can set different colours for both the OP and your own posts.

OP posts are green for me.

I don't understand the issue. Like a lot of PPs I use the "thanks" button quite often when I haven't commented. Even if I have commented with a different name, how would anyone know the 'thanks' was from me? Unless I thanked as name A. Then commented as name B "I just thanked your comment"?

GoogleWhacked · 10/07/2024 14:05

BarcardiWithGadaffia · 10/07/2024 14:00

That doesn't make any sense, I often thank posts on a thread I haven't posted on. Did you think that only the OP was allowed to thank posts? Anyone can do it for any thread

I don't see how it would give away a name change

And my OP posts are in green..... so doesn't make sense to me.

Snap.
Also I’ve made comments on threads under different usernames and had lots of ‘thanks’. I had 18 once, I felt great 🤣. It’s like the mumsnet version of a ‘like’.

BarcardiWithGadaffia · 10/07/2024 14:07

I don't understand why if you looked at the thanks and there was one from someone who wasnt on the thread your automatic assumptions would be that it was someone who had name changed

Why would that be?

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 10/07/2024 14:07

Another person who really doesn't understand how this is an issue.

You don't have to be the OP or even a thread contributor to thank someone, so how on earth are name changes obvious?

Plus also, does anyone really analyse the names of all of the people who have thanked them to see if they're on the thread? Surely that would take forever!!

DappledThings · 10/07/2024 14:08

I don't see the issue either. I also sometimes send thanks without contributing and I don't see why me thanking someone would make that person link that username to a different one.

You must get loads of thanks if you think it would take forever 😂

Lucky you

OK, maybe not forever.Grin But I definitely get way too many to start keeping tabs on people and I assume that most posters are the same!!

Yes, it would be odd. They are just a list of names to me.
There are mumsnet sralkers on here though who like to search back people's username to try and tear them apart. I find that sort of behaviour odd too.

MoralOrLegal · 10/07/2024 14:17

An example... I am on a small niche support thread. If I post "DC has done XYZ" then other regulars will always post "Well done, MoralOrLegal DC!"

If I then click "thanks" without checking, I will reveal a name change I use for other stuff. Nobody else on MN would "thank" those posts.

Concretejungle1 · 10/07/2024 14:20

I font get it. I add thanks all the time but dont actually bother commenting?

I mean yes, potentially the one person who wrote "Well done MoralandLegal" and then got thanked by ImmoralandIllegal might go " ah, that must be the same person. I'm interested in both those usernames enough to no go stalking them both to try and find out who they are" but it's pretty low risk anyone would be that invested.

I just found the thread in Site Stuff. It's 3 months old which suggests OP started a TAAT because they fancied whipping up a bit more fuss over what's a very minor issue.

This is a good question but I just tested it. On this thread, all my posts appear in the same name, in the message box at the bottom my name is already there. I just looked at another thread from last year when I had a different name and in the message box at the bottom it had the name I was using then, but I didn’t do anything for that to happen, it just did it automatically for me. So if you have posted ‘my daughter did this or that’ in one name, everything else you do on that thread will be in that name.

MeAgainAndAgain · 10/07/2024 13:23

@ForestAtTheSea “or to support a minority view on a thread where there is a heated discussion and I do not have the headspace or time to contribute, too.”

This is one of the reasons I wish everyone could see how many thanks a post has. Not who they are from, but just a number. Someone who has an opposing viewpoint but more likes than anyone else might make other people stop and read again. A bit like Reddit, if a comment has risen to the top I am more likely to stop and think, and not simply dismiss it because I don’t instantly agree. I’ve had my opinion changed sometimes by this.

I’ve never had so many thanks reactions as when I’ve said something positive about trans people/suggested that transphobia is bad. Seeing the reactions might change peoples minds that mumsnet is a hive of anti-trans nastiness!”

When I last checked, "thanks" didn't follow that change! But I agree with@MeAgainAndAgain that it's unlikely to be a problem.

MrsStottlemeyer · 10/07/2024 14:30

I don't understand the thanks thing? It's not a thing on the app.

OpizpuHeuvHiyo · 10/07/2024 14:32

DinaofCloud9 · 10/07/2024 10:37

It's easy as the op posts are in pink so if you get thanked by someone who's posts aren't highlighted then it's obviously a name change.

Not everyone wants their names linked.

Don't be ridiculous. Of course someone other than the OP could thank you if they think you said something worthwhile. Anyone could thank me on this post and if it wasn't a name that commented on this thread that would give me absolutely zero information about who it was who thanked me. I couldn't draw any conclusions about whether they were the OP with a namechange or just someone who read the thread and didn't feel the need to comment because everything relevant has already been said.

MeAgainAndAgain · 10/07/2024 14:33

Well, yes. Just because someone is articulate and has time to write doesn’t mean that everyone follows their views necessarily.

And if people see what comments are being ‘thanked’ you know what direction you need to take in your comment in reply. If a comment with 20 likes says ‘here is an interesting study I read about and there are some great comments below it that gave me food for thought’ then those ‘likes’ are worth more than the comment that says ‘all anti trans women are poo poo heads and I have nothing more to add’, even if that also got 20 ‘likes’.

"Thanks" are just like a "like" button but it's set up so that only the author of each individual post knows who liked them. The OP of the thread and other mumsnetters whether or not they comment on the thread get zero information about which posts are more liked than which others, only their own posts.

I don't know about the past, but I think that is now prevented automatically. On the same thread, you cannot change the username.
However, some people said that it's possible to circumvent by being simultaneously logged in with different devices - that does not need to be with nefarious intentions, it could be someone logged in at home with a tablet and going out, posting on their phone.

No that doesn't follow at all

There's NOTHING that links names merely by thanking

You still can change names on a thread. But unless you change it on the box above where you post your message, it will revert to the name you had previously used on this thread. Regardless of our you've changed it in your settings.
