Hearing the mam talk on the news. I am heartbroken for her and her family.
But 17 years in jail is nothing he ruined at least two families.

Why do they even make cars that can go that speed?. Genuine question....

For the German autobahn.

I’ve never thought of this before!
It makes so much sense!

Anyone driving 100mph is dangerous driving and it shouldn’t be allowed at all.

It would be hard to restrict on old cars and I’m sure there would be some illegal way to mess with them but the government/world should at least start producing cars that have a lower maximum speed.

My DB had a car that went to 200mph.
He never went that fast in it as it cost a lot of money but why would a car even need to go that fast.

If a car has a maximum speed of say, 100mph, it is going to be struggling at the top end of 70mph on a motorway.
Not good for the engine or environment. And you could forget ever towing a trailer or caravan.

I have never heard of speed limits on vehicles, just limits on BHP, and that is on motorbikes, not cars.

It is actually a thing that all new cars sold from last week have to be sold with a speed restrictor so a car will lose power if consistently speeding to bring the speed down. I read it last week. Though it sounded like it would be possible to override it.

Does anyone know if the sentencing report is available - I want to understand why it was only 17 years

When people kill with a car a lot of the sentences are very lenient. I don’t understand, is it because so many drive?

Yes I really want to understand the sentencing here

Exactly right. Cars should not be able to go so fast. There is absolutely no need and all the risk

Superhansrantowindsor · 10/07/2024 07:32

Anyone caught drunk driving or using a mobile phone at the wheel should be banned for life. As pp said - the inconvenience of not having a licence is nothing compared to the trauma their selfish actions could inflict on others. My heart breaks for the baby’s mother.

Paul2023 · 10/07/2024 07:41

But the government could if they really wanted to , make death by drink driving / dangerous driving , have longer sentences.

No government ever seems to change it.

Why can’t this man have a life sentence , I know it’s because the guidelines say that sentence isn’t sufficient for his convictions.

I just feel so sad, that poor woman looking for her baby’s body on the road, and seeing her sister killed.

That piece of scum Anderson will be out in probably 7 or 8 years and will just go back to his normal life .

How is this even fair ?

Vinorosso74 · 10/07/2024 07:47

It is heartbreaking. I can't get over how he shows no remorse. Nasty piece of work, the fact his wife came home early from holiday speaks volumes.
I agree he should be banned from driving for life. I don't care if people are inconvenienced from losing their licence. There's too many idiots around. People who speed, drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs need to be banned for life, even if they haven't killed or injured anyone as the next time they may do.

LadyKenya · 09/07/2024 20:52

Don't use this to try to score cheap shots. You should be more concerned that he will be able to still legally drive at some point in the future, from what the poor mother was saying in her statement.

They have a point though. And you don’t have the right to dictate what people can and can’t post on here depending whether it paints your precious Labour Party in a bad light.

TheFairyCaravan · 10/07/2024 08:26

This man has 10 convictions already, excluding this one, including drink driving, assaulting an emergency worker and battery. He’d been warned about his driving, his Sheffield, a week before he killed the baby and his Aunt. When he comes out he will probably reoffend. They should jsut throw away the key.

ButterCrackers · 10/07/2024 08:37

It should be two life sentences for the two people he killed. Why is the system so lenient? Bet he gets a new identity when he gets out early to protect him- what a disgraceful waste of money.
Anyone who drink drives should be banned for life, be put in prison and see their assets sold and benefits taken away for life to pay for prison. Families would be affected but at least they would be alive as compared to the lives ruined by deaths from the drink driver scum. There should be no drinking if you’re driving. It’s that simple and that easy - drink and get a bus/taxi/walk/car share with friends. Don’t drink and you can drive.

lemonstolemonade · 10/07/2024 09:05

Was the "staff member" who smelt alcohol on him in charge of the valet parking at the airport? Unclear from the article. It's obviously very difficult for a person (who is not paid to be law enforcement) to deny the person the vehicle if they might get confrontational, but it could have saved two lives to have been able to call the airport police in this scenario.

Same to you dear, have a nice day.

Dreaddy · 10/07/2024 12:45

Don't know if it's just me, but I don't understand how people actually use phones and drive. Before I had the option to use buttons on my steering wheel I didn't even like changing the radio station whilst driving, it felt distracting. Using a phone is a whole other level. I still see people doing it all the time as I drive an SUV and can see people in smaller cars holding their phones lower than the window, clearly so people can't see. It's so reckless.

DancingLions · 10/07/2024 13:56

Whilst I do not disagree at all with anything that's been said so far, 17 years is actually a "good" result. In terms of sentencing guidelines. The current range is 2-18 years so anything over 18 and he would have had a good chance of appealing the sentence. As it stands, he hasn't got a case. So I'm sure that factored into the decision.

"The average (mean) custodial sentence for causing death by dangerous driving in 2020 was almost 5 years in prison. It is likely this number will increase following the recent change to the maximum term. Some estimates suggest a 'new' average (mean) term of 7 years in prison."

There are some people who have committed this offence and got away with a Suspended Sentence.

On a personal level I agree he's a scumbag who should be locked up forever. My heart broke for that poor woman looking for her baby at the side of the road. In my view a car is a dangerous weapon in the wrong hands and sentencing should reflect that. But these are the laws we currently have.

JohnofWessex · 10/07/2024 19:32

I suggest that this is a symptom of 'Motornormativity'

If there was more enforcement and more importantly more licences taken away and making it much harder to get them back then we may well see fewer incidents like this

Arconialiving · 10/07/2024 20:52

Tbskejue · 09/07/2024 20:45

I rarely cry at the news but reading about her looking for her baby broke me a bit.

Me too. Truly horrendous. Plus the poor lorry driver who found the baby first. And her sister too. There really are no words.

Imisscoffee2021 · 16/09/2024 13:25

I read this story when my son was the same age and my blood just ran cold, I just cannot fathom what that mother went through and that poor poor baby. Lack of remorse should make him.i eligible for early release and sentence should be life. It wasnt spur of the moment, he got behind the wheel drunk, he drove way over the limit drunk and then he took his eyes off the road and took a photo too, I just can't get the idea out of my head of that moment, too too horrible.

Luddite26 · 16/09/2024 13:50

Utter scumbag.
