Dd went on a residential trip last week for her end of year primary school thing. I bought for her, a body spray to use whilst she was there because it was a lot of outdoor activities.

Now all I can smell is the bloody body spray. She reapplies it daily. My fault really for getting it in the first place but I thought she would be older than 11 before the perfume fug starts. I’m just lucky the lynx for ds hasn’t started yet!

@Soubriquet my 11 yr old is about as pale as is humanly possible. One by one all the older local girls have started the orange look, streaky legs visible under their school uniforms. DD says she hates it so far but all the other parents tried to resist it too and complain now of stained sheets and toilet seats. Dread it.

never buy them a scent you don’t love the smell of!

My son who grew up into a ''Manly man'' LOVED as a teenager English rose and Tangerine scented bath gel from the Body Shop.
So much nicer than ''Lynx''

SlashBeef · 07/07/2024 17:12

I wish my 11 yo son would get obsessed with a scent! He moans about washing and I attack him daily with deodorant after his shower 😫

I gave DD a roll on as you need to stop the sweating not mask it and she sweats quite a lot.

She hates aerosols (SEN) and won't use anything other than roll on now.

Hankunamatata · 07/07/2024 17:16

Lynx here and yuck yep. I tell them bedroom only or bathroom and open a window or I sneeze so much

One2threego · 07/07/2024 17:16

Eyesopenwideawake · 07/07/2024 16:22

This. Much better for the environment.

And a roll-on better for her lungs

sentfrmmyiphone · 07/07/2024 17:18

at 11 i would say its better than the 'smelly pits' odour of a nearly teenager... i'd actually have been happy if my 2 had taken to their personal hygiene at that age.. i had to suffer until they reached about 13 before they began to notice

I remember when my dh was living at home. His dad would comment 'smells like a tarts hand bag in here!' Which translated to the house smelling of lynx and versace blue jeans! His brother was still at home then, too. No escape

versace blue jeans!!! OMG that smell is like a memory vault for me ))

TheKingCobraIsNotStrictlySpeakingACobra · 07/07/2024 17:25

It’s mot the cheapest option, but I really rate the Wild deodorants for their scents. Some really lovely ones and they feel quite like a luxury treat.

maybe worth trying to get teens into those and letting them pick their own scents? There are loads to choose from

Charlie

OMG, is that still around? Charlie, Rive Gauche and Mary Quant AM, the scents of my adolescence.

SoupDragon · 07/07/2024 17:40

DD smells strongly of vanilla and is also vanilla coloured! Not every teenage girl goes for the oompah loompah look.

thecrispfiend · 07/07/2024 16:49

Wait till she discovers the Sol de Janeiro sprays - to be fair they smell amazing ut are v expensive!!

Yep, 13 year old DD started on Impulse then quickly progressed to So Sprays. Now it’s Victoria’s Secret and bloody Sol de Janeiro! I hate the overly rich vanilla sent of them all and feel so sorry for teachers if they have a class full of kids topping up their sprays all day.

longdistanceclaraclara · 07/07/2024 17:44

@HMTheQueenMuffin missed the point spectacularly there. Bad day?!

How come these cheap body sprays can overpower a house yet my very expensive perfume lasts all of 5 seconds! 😂

I’d love to know that too. Chanel or Jo Malone lasts about 10 minutes on me but my car seems to be permanently infused with smells akin to 1980s Ambre Solaire oil!

tarheelbaby · 07/07/2024 17:51

I know what you mean. I love perfumes myself but I didn't expect my teen DDs to start wearing their own ones. Not so long ago, they were complaining about some of mine they didn't like.

I used to get told that in the 90s too, and smells like a tarts boudoir in here😂.

I would be teaching her that perfumes etc are endocrine and hormone disruptors

Try and wean her off them and onto roll-ons before she gets to secondary school, I would say 90% of our fire alarms are caused by spray deodorants (which are banned on our school but still get brought in) setting off the smoke detectors in the changing rooms. It's really disruptive and you really don't want them going off during exams.

CoffeeBeansGalore · 07/07/2024 18:12

Both dds went through Impulse & So. But this was in addition to antiperspirant. Then dd1 got into the Holister sprays. Then they both went on to "proper" perfumes.
To save their expensive perfumes, both now love using Ted Baker Violet & Bergamont as a day to day spray. This is pleasant and not chokingly foggy.

earlymorningcurlewcall · 07/07/2024 18:15

I now have flashbacks of the changing room at school... There was so much Impulse and Charlie that you could nearly breathe.

She'll stop using it eventually, OP.

AstonMartha · 07/07/2024 18:16

Charlie red is a right of passage (and better than impulse imo). Next step is Anais Anais.

Mine have all left home now but it’s part of parenting imo. Impulse/Charlie or Lynx. The stinky years.

EweCee · 07/07/2024 18:19

Spraying Sol de Janeiro in the house before school is banned in our house - sooo strong and too much for me that early 😆 now she sprays it on walking down the path to school! At least it's a pleasant scent , my friends house stank and she discovered her 12yo was using TWO lynx sprays each morning - one under each arm 😂
