Help me get to Antarctica

Right. Fuck this. Life is short and I've been banging on about this for ages. I'm assuming at least £10k so I'll be saving as of now. I'm turning 40 in August. I'd like to do this before 45. Someone on here must have done this. Help me. How do I book and is it worth it? I really, really want to do this!!

No! We really have to stop treating this amazing planet like it's our fucking playground and it doesn't matter how much we trash it as long as we have a nice time in the process.
If everyone wanted to go to Antarctica it would be completely fucked in less than a year or two.
We are not entitled to do this.

ByCupidStunt · 07/07/2024 10:37

My friend did this and spent £15k she said it was the holiday of a lifetime.

She also advised that you should travel to the far away places whilst still young and then as you age you can see the places closer to home as it's easier. Which makes sense. I was doing the opposite.

Agreed. We bloody wreck the world. I think tourism to the Antarctic should be banned.

I take it you don’t travel, drive, have kids or eat meat?

Well, it's not. So until then, people are free to go if they want to.

The two aren't comparable.

Read the answer you have just quoted. A trip like this isn't quite the same as visiting Euston Station or the local Tesco store.

spanieleyes · 07/07/2024 11:41

Have a look at Hurtigen cruises, they do " ethically responsible" tourism- if there is such a thing!

spanieleyes · 07/07/2024 11:42

Hurtigruten!

spanieleyes · 07/07/2024 11:45

I give up!
Silversea, Hurtigruten is Arctic!

mitogoshi · 07/07/2024 12:16

Do you want to walk on the ice/snow or are you content sailing past? You can cruise (princess or Holland America for instance) for a reasonable price though flights to South America aren't cheap. I've priced it at £4500 per person including 2 nights in Buenos Aires.

To land on Antarctica you need to be on a small often called expedition ship max 500 people and than comes at a much higher price tag £8k+ per person not including the international flights.

I kind of have a pipe dream to apply for a job down there, the museum in South Georgia looked amazing for instance!

With these trips you do get what you pay for so look very carefully about what is included, the precise wording - lots of sailing by and lots of get out clauses due to weather so insurance is so critical

mitogoshi · 07/07/2024 12:17

@spanieleyes

They do Antarctica too, it's their expedition brand not coastal

My DGM always told us this. They 'played it safe' and were very keen to pay mortgage off early, and were planning the luxury holidays for their retirement. By then both of them had health issues and couldn't go outside of UK. She was extremely resentful of this and told us to very much live for the moment.

Soubriquet · 07/07/2024 12:23

Be warned, I have read the Antarctic stinks like penguin poop

Jellifer · 07/07/2024 12:28

I did this in 2018 with Hurtigruten. Flew to Buenos Aires and then charter flight to Ushuaia where we picked up the ship. It really was the trip of a lifetime!!

Some larger cruise lines do a ‘sail by’ trip as they’re too big for passengers to get off and explore but I’d really recommend a smaller ship. We got off via zodiac inflatable dinghys each day and it was incredible.

Swan Hellenic have some great offers on at the moment, they’d be worth a look too.

Ask away if you have questions!

I’m going to Antartica on an expedition (rather than traditional style) cruise next March. It’s very expensive because the ship is fuelled by electric batteries. The authorities in the area are very strict on how many people can land on any island in a day.

Hurtigruten goes to Antartica too. It’s who we are going with. They are very eco friendly, including having engines powered by electric batteries. Silversea ships are beautiful, but like most cruise ships, very polluting.

Namechangedforthis25 · 26/08/2024 00:10

I didn’t know you could even travel there but now I know you can - and seeing all the posts-

why is tourism to Antarctica so much worse than tourism to other far-flung places

Honestly just trying to understand

ouch321 · 26/08/2024 00:14

I suggest you look at the TA forums. There is a decent one for Antartica which I spent many hours on. It is a very expensive trip and the more so now as the cruise lines seem to be trying to bring the luxe concept into the trips. Which of course pushes the price up further even if you have no interest in Michelin dining.

My sister went on one of these earlier this year. She said it was incredible.

choirmumoftwo · 26/08/2024 00:21

I'm going in January with Hurtigruten for my 60th birthday. It's the only trip on my bucket list and I can't wait. Flying to Chile then voyage to Falkland Islands (where we'll catch up with a friend who lives there), South Georgia and Antarctica. Then I can die happy - obviously not really though we'll be living on baked beans for a while as our son is also getting married in May!!
