Help me get to Antarctica

Right. Fuck this. Life is short and I've been banging on about this for ages. I'm assuming at least £10k so I'll be saving as of now. I'm turning 40 in August. I'd like to do this before 45. Someone on here must have done this. Help me. How do I book and is it worth it? I really, really want to do this!!

No! We really have to stop treating this amazing planet like it's our fucking playground and it doesn't matter how much we trash it as long as we have a nice time in the process.
If everyone wanted to go to Antarctica it would be completely fucked in less than a year or two.
We are not entitled to do this.

Um not everyone is going… you can visit without making a mess of it all.

The two aren't comparable.

Read the answer you have just quoted. A trip like this isn't quite the same as visiting Euston Station or the local Tesco store.

Visiting Antarctica is pretty exclusive so I think we’re ok. Every day activities causing climate change is an actual issue .

We're going early November for 21 days, from Rio down to the Falklands and across to Antarctica. So looking forward to the trip, just trying to find out as many tips as possible from those who have been before.

Bloody hell. OP did not ask for perspectives on the ethics of travel.
Go and enjoy it OP.

I’ve done one of these and would recommend. Only 65 passengers on the boat rather than a massive cruise ship. It was a while ago though. Cost around £3k at the time (I used inheritance money)

Sidebeforeself · 05/09/2024 19:34

I soooo want to do this but I just cant square it with the fragile ecosystem. And to PPs saying its no different to travelling anywhere else - of course it is , thats why its so desirable. But yes all travel has an impact on the planet but theres no escaping the fact that Antarctica is changing rapidly due to global warming.

What price insta likes to the penguin botherers?

The irony, which is lost on the morons who are booked on the Hurtigruten cruises, is that it's only because the ice has disappeared due to climate change that their shithouse polluting ships are able to get through.

Peaky18 · 05/09/2024 20:28

Ask Greta. She's probably been.

Hurtigruten ships are actually powered using hybrid technology. They aim to be zero emissions by 2030. I think you have picked the wrong company to describe as ‘shithouse polluting’ 🙄

I'm going in January, OP - feel free to message me.

I went to Antarctica for my 30th birthday, it was incredible. From the Argentina side across Drakes Passage to the Antarctic Peninsula. It was absolutely incredible. Alongside with the Galapagos it's hands down the best place on earth.

Trail finders is an excellent start. I went on a quark expedition. What was great about it was that every member on board were scientists studying the peninsula whilst we were there, the boat had 120 people on it which was a perfect size, gives everyone the opportunity to explore on the ice at every stop (limited to 50 per area) so three groups, two always in zodiacs. Saw humpback whales, 4 types of penguin a chinstrap penguin hatch, southern right whale (incredibly rare) leopard seals, weasel seals, elephant seals. It was incredible.

I went back in 2012, the ship cost £6000 per person, can't remember the flights etc. so £10,000 seems reasonable. You want the best room you can afford, I was on the middle deck of 8, had a window which was so important for sea sickness! Drakes Shake is a seriously rough passage at times and the weather massively impacts your trip so be warned it's not easy!

We are currently heading for Punta Arenas with Hurtigruten at the end of our 21 night voyage to Falklands, South Georgia and Antarctica. If we'd paid twice as much it would have been worth every penny. Jaw droppingly beautiful landscapes and wildlife and so incredibly well organised. I've already had a few tears at the thought of it being over. Highly recommend if you can (I'm aware not everyone can do it).

Ellmau · 01/02/2025 20:26

One thing to remember with pricing is if you're on your own the per person price will be double.
