Two kilos of pork/beef mince - wtf to do with it?

Sent DH to shops to get ingredients for a cottage pie I’m making for a gathering tomorrow. He instead picked up a mix of pork/beef and there’s LOADS of it.

There’s usually only two of us, so not sure what to make with it (other than maybe meatballs - but 2 kilos is a LOT of meatballs. Any other ideas (he’s gone off to get actual beef mince for the pie).

I’d make a load of ragu and freeze in portions. Ideal for speeding up lasagne / spag bol / cottage pie / baked potato toppings in the future. Beef and pork mix works v well for this.

Meatballs. Freeze them.

heldinadream · 06/07/2024 15:41

Why wouldn't you just use it for the cottage pie? Just freeze in smaller portions if not and take our and use as and when - meatballs, ragu, burgers, whatever.

A massive lasagne.

Nanaboots · 06/07/2024 15:42

I use it for anything you would use beef mince for tbh except the shepherds pie as you say it will be lacking the beefyness. But I would portion it up into enough for a meal for the two of you wrap in cling film and freeze. I often bulk buy mince and do this.

Bowling4TomatoSoup · 06/07/2024 15:42

Mega chilli?

BouleDeSuif · 06/07/2024 15:54

Divide it and freeze it.

FernwoodRydal · 06/07/2024 15:56

Yes why wouldn't you just freeze it in portions and then defrost it when you need?

Freeze and defrost as needed surely?

Sondheimisademigod · 06/07/2024 16:26

Half it. Make a big batch of chilli and one of bolognaise. Freeze

Shepherd's pie should be lacking in beefiness cos it should be made with lamb 😂😂

pork and beef mince mixed make great tasting burgers, so you could make some and freeze for another day or make a meat loaf or meatballs as others have already mentioned

Planesmistakenforstars · 06/07/2024 17:15

Burgers, stuffed peppers, meatloaf, farcies, kofte, stuffed cabbage rolls.

Absolutely. I buy frozen low fat mince, makes a few meals for me and Dh. It’s ridiculously useful to have in the freezer, I can knock up lasagna, chilli, bolognaise in minutes.

GrouchyKiwi · 06/07/2024 17:38

Agree with all those saying to freeze it in smaller portions.

But also: Meatloaf.

DrFoxtrot · 06/07/2024 17:43

Meatballs.

Gino D'Acampo's recipe in a spicy tomato sauce is lovely! www.itv.com/thismorning/articles/ginos-meatballs-in-spicy-tomato-sauce

spikeandbuffy · 06/07/2024 17:56

It's great for lasagne

Idontjetwashthefucker · 06/07/2024 18:11

Defo burgers and meatballs and bolognese, chilli, pies

I agree!
My mum was Italian, and she always said that a real, traditional ragu, (not the abominable, appalling, lazy Spag Bol terminology 😡), was made with a combination of pork and beef mince.
So you can be supremely authentic!

Peonies12 · 06/07/2024 18:35

Freeze in small portions

caringcarer · 06/07/2024 18:47

I'd make a large Bolognese and portion it up and put it in the freezer. Very handy to just pull out a couple of portions on a busy night.

soupfiend · 06/07/2024 18:49

Freeze in 500g portions.

Perfect28 · 06/07/2024 18:50

This would be delicious in cottage pie. Make a big batch of Ragu!
