How many holidays do you go on per year?

OP posts:
CeeJay81 · 06/07/2024 09:16

1 or 2. This year its 2, a short break the UK in Summer and Tenerife in December. Next year our budget will be less, so just 1.

ScarletWitchM · 06/07/2024 09:24

Usually do a family holiday as a week abroad in spring (Easter or may school holidays) a week in UK in summer hols and another UK break in either Easter or May hols (the one when we don’t go abroad) and then me & DH do a week abroad in winter around Nov/ Dec
so about 4 per year

FinishTheGame · 06/07/2024 10:14

We usually have one or two holidays abroad and then lots of holidays in the UK, some just weekends.

Every few years we spend the summer holidays in my home country.

WitchyBits · 06/07/2024 10:20

I go away as much as possible. I prioritise it. This year I went to Euro Disney with my sister and niblibgs. Going to Corfu for two weeks this month. Then an all inclusive Christmas market cruise in early December. Then the 20th of December I'm having a weekend at Chatsworth house as i love love love Pride and Prejudice and I'm going to be doing a glass blowing workshop with I am INCREDIBLY excited about. Next year it's a two week Caribbean cruise in March/April, then a Norwegian fjords cruise in June and possibly a week eurocamp France with my grandkids in August/September. Probably a trip for December. 2026 I'm looking into a Hong long trip and then a 14 day cruise after 4-5 days sightseeing.

Nourishinghandcream · 06/07/2024 10:24

Never go on a "holiday" lasting a week or more, also never go abroad (personal choice).
We do however have midweek breaks away in our Moho 20-30 times a year, each one being 2-3 nights.

JennyBeanR · 06/07/2024 10:29

Several long weekend breaks throughout the year. 3 holidays of 4/5 days or more.

I think having several weekend breaks suits me as it gives me something to look forward to and is quite easy with my DD.

ShaunaSadeki · 06/07/2024 10:35

It varies, but usually a long weekend away with DH and/or friends.

a bit of camping here and there with DH and younger DD

then a longer holiday with DH, DD, adult DS, DF and DSM (fully or partly funded by DF and DSM) as they emigrated somewhere very far away and expensive and they don’t like coming to the UK if they can help it).

niclw · 06/07/2024 10:36

None. I've just looked at two nights away for me plus dc anywhere this summer. I can't do it in the school hols. It's just too expensive and I'm a teacher so cannot take holiday at other times.

Bohomovies · 06/07/2024 10:38

marshmallowfinder · 06/07/2024 09:08

None at all. I can't afford them. Holidays are an indulgence and a luxury and people should not be flying round the world either, without a second thought. I find this question pretty annoying. Yes, I know I don't have to read the post but I'm sick of the casual way in which most people assume everyone else goes on a holiday.

I didn’t have a single holiday for eighteen years, so I don’t feel bad about being able to go places now. You don’t know people’s backstories or circumstances, so getting resentful is a bit pointless really.

NeedthatFridayfeeling · 06/07/2024 10:39

2 or 3 abroad

mitogoshi · 06/07/2024 10:40

A few Blush

Kids are adults, house paid off, still working so probably as affluent as we'll ever be.

This year 2 x flying city breaks (weddings actually) 10 days in the his country, 2 weeks abroad plus a few weekends in this country but a lot of times camping at festivals/rallies. When my kids were small it was 2 weeks at my parents (by sea) and maybe a family festival. If you are raising young children you don't have the same lifestyle as people in my position, something that gets forgotten

mitogoshi · 06/07/2024 10:43

@ByQuaintAzureWasp

My dream for when we are retired in 5 years time. I want to leave the uk on the 2nd January each year for warmer climes!

readingismycardio · 06/07/2024 10:44

Before the baby 4 - one city break in spring, one big hol in August/Sept, one city break in Oct, and usually skiing in December. Now just 1 this year, waiting for the baby to get older to get the guts 😂

LBOCS2 · 06/07/2024 10:48

Two or three week long holidays with a few weekends away in between.

This year we went to Lanzarote for a week April, did weekends in Norwich in May and Germany in June, will be doing a week in the Cotswolds in late July and a long weekend in Lincolnshire over the August bank holiday. We're not decided on whether we might get in a city break/eurocamp at the end of the summer or in October (annual leave/finances permitting) and I'm going away for a week with my friends from uni for our mutual 40ths in November.

This year has been particularly holiday-heavy as a result of various birthday celebrations, to be fair. It's usually two weeks away and maybe one or two long weekends.

MissAmbrosia · 06/07/2024 10:51

When dd was small we used to maybe 2 a couple of long weekends at CP or similar and then bung everything in the car and drive to France or Italy for 3 weeks in summer holidays. Plus the odd trip back to the UK. Now she's at Uni we normally do 2 big trips May/June and September/October - she goes away with her friends. I normally do a couple of City breaks with my friends and DH and I will go away for a night or so somewhere closer by - we like going to Netherlands. Now he's retired and I am allowed to work outside the country for a period of time, I am thinking next year we might rent somewhere where it's a warmer for a month or so. I do prioritise travel though.

L4815162342 · 06/07/2024 10:52

One is the norm for us.

This year we have 12 nights in the South of France in August.

Next year I've booked Spain for a week in May Half Term and Croatia for 9 Nights in August. I have only put down a small deposit for Spain so far and finances dependent we may cancel if necessary and prioritise Croatia. So, we try for two if we can, but always one.

We have a household income of 62-72k before tax and depending on bonus. High outgoings at the moment as we are trying to pay off some old credit card debt from when our income was much lower. Once that's paid off, things will be much better in terms of disposable.

I’ve never been able to consider ‘a night away’…packing up for all weather eventualities, not checking in u til 2 or 3 pm, not being able to work out shower controls, avoiding marking sheets & towels…..just to repack & check out by 10 or 11am next morning. Why? Just why?
To me that’s torture!

Pack light, get there and check in, get ready and go out for a beautiful dinner & drinks with the love of my life somewhere you've never been! Back to bed, throw every thing in it's bag the next morning, a nice breakfast done for me, check out and then a really good exploration round where ever we've gone. Then home! It's lovely and no stress!

Oh, are people on this thread calling that a holiday? I don't consider that a holiday (and to be honest I agree with the PP that it's all too much faff (and money) just to eat dinner in a different location.

protectoroftherealm · 06/07/2024 11:29

@Geiyotue No I wouldn't call that a holiday either! It's a night away! And if you've got the money it's really no faff at all!

user1471548941 · 06/07/2024 11:37

3 x long weekends in Europe, 2 of which were to attend events!
2 x long weekend in Scotland/Northern England to visit family/friends (is this a holiday or just away?!)
1 x week in the USA to participate in a major sporting weekend
1 x 3 week cruise at the end of the year in Asia.

We’re not usually this crazy but this year a few events popped up that we were really keen to go to, then we got places in the sporting event unexpectedly and had already booked our long holiday before we knew that! We’ve squeezed financially to do it but a couple of these are once in a lifetime events so not normal. We also have no kids and earn well and usually visit places out of season in order to get cheaper prices.

Next year looks more like our normal:

1 x week away for wedding anniversary (location TBD)
1 x UK week in summer, visiting family and friends who live far away
1 x long haul 2-3 week trip in autumn time.

circular2478 · 06/07/2024 11:43

Usually around 5, then a few city breaks.

PizzaPastaWine · 06/07/2024 11:44

Usually about 5.

This year it's Andalucia, Krakow, Greece, Spain and a UK break. Most with my DC, one with my DP and another with a friend.

I prioritise travel. I buy cheap flights and stay in AirB&B type accommodation (which i prefer).

I spend very little on myself when it comes to clothes etc. I prefer to spend on travel.

Appleblum · 06/07/2024 11:48

5 or 6 usually. Some of them are short 3 night trips though.

Retiredearly61 · 06/07/2024 11:49

@PizzaPastaWine you sound like me, we go 4/5 times, always cheap flights, travel light and basic but nice accommodation. If I look at my holiday pics from the last 10 years it’s always the same clothes I’m wearing cos I don’t buy unless they are worn out!
People make comments like ‘you are always away’ but when I look at some package holiday costs they are as much for one holiday as I’d pay for 4 trips
