Yes, don't understand it. They had a ruthlessly efficient vote share. Corbyn piled up votes in specific areas, but this was targeted and coordinated - and was part of their core strategy.

And for every L/D or Green voter that held their nose to vote Labour, there are voters like me that have had to vote tactically the other way around for years.

If they can target and deploy limited resources as effectively and efficiently as that via the levers of a party machine, it does give me hope as to their ability to effect change via the levers of government.

"Labour won 410 seats, but the other parties weren't trying to win seats so it doesn't count" is the implication of a lot of takes floating around

To be fair, there is little evidence that Sunak and the Tories tried to win many seats.

Cornettoninja · 05/07/2024 09:31

oh what a beautiful morning! Grin

I live in a funny area where my town straddles two constituencies and is right on the border of two counties. Two Tory constituencies - one I think for forty years and the other for over a decade at least are now both Labour!

I was a bit worried about reform in this area but they’ve come third in both areas. I’d have rather lib dem’s or greens took more of a share but I’m not letting perfect be the enemy of the good.

JRM, Mordent and Truss have been booted and that’s just beautiful. I wonder if Rishi’s sense of service is strong enough to commit to serving the constituents who voted him in again?

Cute dog.
Byeee Mr Hunt

DuncinToffee · 05/07/2024 09:34

Sophie Ridge

I wonder how much the relatively low Labour vote share is down to tactical voting - eg. Labour supporters voting Lib Dem in the south west to unseat Conservatives etc

Good point

Everytime someone says that if you add Reform to Con then they would have won, I want to point out that in quite a few seats that are still Blue if you add Lib Dem to Lab one of them wins the Blue seat...

Jess Phillips was impressive despite intimidation.

George Galloway going was fun.

Rishi conceded at his own hustings very early.

SNP all but wiped out, which is encouraging.

A whole load of Tory Portillo moments.

Greens did well.

Reform situation is a bit concerning.

That's about it.

That's not quite it. I'd also like to add:

Wales is now Tory-free.

Plaid Cymru now have 4 seats (the same as Reform but guess who'll get more airtime)

Notonthestairs · 05/07/2024 09:38

Something like 40% of Reform voters polled by YouGov would not have voted for anyone__ if Reform wasn't standing.

It's wrong to assume all Reform votes automatically shift to the Tories.

They also took votes off Labour )albeit much smaller).

Wales is Tory free, one seat in NW and one seat in NE. 😁

But, but, but 'Labour in Wales'

I was thinking about this.
Being in government can be a handicap because you run on your record, but really hasn't been for Labour in Wales.

DuncinToffee · 05/07/2024 09:47

LK not impressed that Macron has already spoken to Starmer Grin

TaraTories · 05/07/2024 08:54

I am quite looking forward to Farage having to do some work. I get the feeling he won't like it up 'im to badly quite Dad's Army.

Yes, spoken to a couple of other political types who agreed Labour got a lot of Green and LD votes last night as a show of solidarity.

I'm not convinced he will do any work. He never did as an MEP and had a terrible attendance/ voting record.

She needs to admit defeat and go to bed.

Did whoever replaced Boris in his constituency get elected ?

RosaRoja · 05/07/2024 09:50

God, there was a time when I so hated Hunt. Bye, perfidious wanker.

Zonder · 05/07/2024 09:50

No! Went to Labour I think

Nope it went Labour.

IClaudine · 05/07/2024 09:50

Good morning from Tory free Wales!

Have had about three hours sleep. Have the Reform UK PLC "posters" started going on that they was robbed yet? It is such a relief that the initial poll was wrong.

Going to catch up on results and thread.

deeahgwitch · 05/07/2024 09:51

Thank you @Igotjelly

RosaRoja · 05/07/2024 09:51

So Reform and Green have 4 each? Guess who the papers will bleat on about.

RafaistheKingofClay · 05/07/2024 09:53

DuncinToffee · 05/07/2024 09:43

But, but, but 'Labour in Wales'

It’s almost like telling England how much of a shithole Wales is under Labour was not a great strategy for winning votes in Wales.

DuncinToffee · 05/07/2024 09:55

Labour GAIN Poole from the Tories by just 18 votes
