Do you like strongly scented laundry?

I cannot wear clothes unless they smell really strongly of the washing powder. I think it’s a throwback to being a student and putting deodorant over mildew stained clothes 😅

It makes me twitchy if I can’t smell detergent! Please tell me I’m not completely mad

Yes. The stronger the better. Most of the time it barely smells of anything.

Love, love the smell of scented laundry! I line dry mine and even the garden smells of my washing when I go to bring it in 🤭

That makes me shudder! The garden should smell of natural smells like grass, or the sun on paving. Artificial scents have enironmental impacts but also arent good for people (esp babies & small children). So no, I use unscented detergent & have to re-wash secondhand stuff & hang it out to air to get rid of the hideous smells of detergent.

SirChenjins · 04/07/2024 06:37

Yes I do - although I’m very particular about the smell.

Bloody hell, this thread turned nuts. I suppose part of the reason I don't like strongly scented laundry is because I do indeed use other scented products like shampoo, body wash, perfume. It's too much when they're all competing against each other.

Trust some people on Mumsnet to turn every little thing into a class marker though.

SharonEllis · 04/07/2024 06:39

S0livagant · 03/07/2024 22:51

There is a fair bit of snobbery on Mumsnet against these products but I don't care, thankfully!

I don't think it's snobbery. The hard up can't afford them.

And they are unhealthy as various people have pointed out. We keep seeing rises in allergies etc and can't figure out why?!

Fkouncingflump · 04/07/2024 06:44

Me!

I spend ages making sure laundry and fabric conditioner mix well and have a nice smell. My favourite is fairy powder and comfort conditioner. Reminds me of when DD was a baby.
i love smelling it on other people too - clean and comforting.

we once had an issue with our machine where the clothes smelt like nothing and it made me feel genuinely uncomfortable.

I also don’t like clothes drying outside because then they smell like outside and not the fabric conditioner.

and I absolutely never leave laundry out overnight because the dark gets on the clothes and spiders rub their willies on it all.

Ereyraa · 04/07/2024 06:45

Off to get my DC up and abuse them by putting them in hideous, freshly-washed-in-fairy school uniform, destroying the environment and confusing babies, how vile of me.

Have a great day MN

LaughingCat · 04/07/2024 06:49

Ewww, god no. I hate it to smell too strongly of anything - a very light scent is fine but nothing too much.

And you sniff your daughter before school? 🤣

pilo7 · 04/07/2024 06:49

Another one for Ecover zero, fragrance free.

I actually ask Vinted sellers not to spray items with perfume before sending, although they generally come stinking of (the same) laundry detergent anyway.

fieldsofbutterflies · 04/07/2024 07:12

We just buy Tesco own brand powder which I think smells nice but not overpowering or too artificial. I never use any kind of fabric conditioner.

soupfiend · 04/07/2024 07:21

No, I absolutely cannot bear it. I think it smells cheap. Yes I know how that sounds, so kill me

I wear and collect perfume, so theres no way I want clashing fragrances around me.

Unless I am actually looking for a perfume that smells like detergent (and Ive got lots of unusual fragrances and am looking for things like palmolive smell for example), I dont want the smell of laundry to mess up whatever perfume I have put on that day

Funkyfizz · 04/07/2024 07:24

Is there anything on MN that some people are not snobby about? No wonder MN has such an up it's own arse reputation.

Not wanting my washing to stink of overpowering additives isn't about the price of said additives.

Garlickest · 03/07/2024 23:31

Me, too ... that said, what I'd really like is a long-lasting fragrance product that smells faintly of washing powder 😂 I bought some of those balls about a year ago. Only used them for a week as too strong - but, now, when I get something out that was washed then, I love the scent!

Yeah, I like a subtle 'fresh linen' or 'cotton fresh' scent.

llamajohn · 04/07/2024 07:38

No fragrance here please.

Seems an odd flex for some reason.

Huh?

My kids clothes are freshly washed ... They just aren't caked in harsh chemicals providing an artificial odour....

What's your point?

The marketing is deeply imbedded here ... You're a marketer's dream 😜

spikeandbuffy · 04/07/2024 00:16

Yeah I'm a scent person
Reed diffusers, wax melts, perfume collector etc
I draw the line at plug ins Grin and my windows are always open at home so lots of fresh air too. My dad hates "choking scented crap" as he calls it and the most he ever says is the place smells nice and clean

Lol, so you spend money on scent makers and then just open your windows and let it all out??
What a waste of time and money ... your tiny diffuser is doing a lot of work trying scent the entire planet 😂😂

usernother · 04/07/2024 07:47

I don't use fabric conditioner and like it best when my clothes smell of being dried outside. Which hasn't happened often this year.

HandymcCandy · 04/07/2024 07:53

Honestly it's just more shit in the waterways.

icelolly12 · 04/07/2024 07:54

QueenOfHiraeth · 03/07/2024 22:14

I know it's unpopular on here but I love laundry to smell clean, fresh and scenty. Sadly my washing machine has other ideas and, no matter what I use or however much of it I use, the washing just comes out clean.
I even bought that washing stuff that MNetters raved about in the Oud fragrance which is pleasant but still faint

What is the product please?

S0livagant · 04/07/2024 07:56

EinekleineKatze · 04/07/2024 07:32

Not wanting my washing to stink of overpowering additives isn't about the price of said additives.

I wouldn't use them even if I had spare cash to throw away but it's only those with spare cash who do buy them so inverse snobbery if anything.

MarshmallowPink · 04/07/2024 07:57

@Cadela is the blue one spring awakening? I'm just trying fabric conditioner for the first time and plumped for golden orchid but am regretting it now!

spikeandbuffy · 04/07/2024 07:58

@llamajohn no
Reed diffusers in the bathrooms which have no windows, wax melts in the hallway, then living room and bedroom windows open most days

icelolly12 · 04/07/2024 08:02

I do love freshly washed, line dried laundry, but all the choking scents are a bit 'Mrs Hinch'
