Do you like strongly scented laundry?

I cannot wear clothes unless they smell really strongly of the washing powder. I think it’s a throwback to being a student and putting deodorant over mildew stained clothes 😅

It makes me twitchy if I can’t smell detergent! Please tell me I’m not completely mad

No, strong scents make me feel sick and give me migraines. I had to leave a cafe last week as one of the staff smelt so strongly of scent boosters.

I have had to donate kids clothes I've bought on vinted as they smell so much and even washing doesn't remove it.

Labraradabrador · 03/07/2024 23:22

I find it nauseating. When i buy from vinted or second hand sale it seems to be the norm for heavily artificial scents. We use Ecover, which is more lightly scented

LuluBlakey1 · 03/07/2024 23:23

I like clothes to be dried outside and smell of fresh air.

I leave them out overnight or in light rain to make that even stronger.

faint smell of powder is fine. The smell of strong liquid wash and fabric conditioner makes me feel really sick especially in a warm room. Line dried with the smell of fresh air is the best I agree! Especially if it has been a sunny day over a lawn

SuePreemly · 03/07/2024 23:25

Fairy was a scent that gave me nausea in pregnancy.

Don't mind a gentle smell but not overpowering. M&S fabric conditioner smells lovely, not too strong

Christ 😂 asked for that one didn’t I. I don’t own an xl bully.

Dont any of your wear scented things at all then? Just swanning about smelling of fresh air?

I occasionally wear perfume but that's about it. Most strong scents are off putting to me, I have worked with several people in the past who have worn perfume that makes me want to vomit. Mainly the old lady urine kind 🤣

PickAChew · 03/07/2024 23:26

I prefer clothes that don't fill my sinuses and make me cough.

What do you think makes it smell so nice? Spiders, that's what.

I prefer a very, very faint washing powder scent or nothing at all. I hate strongly smelling detergents or conditioners and hate the scent boosters.

Me, too ... that said, what I'd really like is a long-lasting fragrance product that smells faintly of washing powder 😂 I bought some of those balls about a year ago. Only used them for a week as too strong - but, now, when I get something out that was washed then, I love the scent!

Mostly I prefer to smell of nothing. When I do choose a scent it is something much nicer / subtler than your strongest laundry detergent.

I don't mind them or washing being darked on.

Gorgonemilezola · 03/07/2024 23:45

I'm old enough to remember when fabric conditioners contained tallow - who wants their clothes doused in rendered animal fat? Put me off for life Grin

I also have lovely memories of DMum hugging us after DDad had taken us out for a walk (likely to give Mum a bit of peace and quiet) and telling us we smelled so lovely and 'fresh airy' - so lovely and 'fresh airy' is my go to fabric scent.

Oh god so it’s Spider jizz that gives the scent?!

Yes, have used fabric softener since the '70s. I actually don't like the smell of things dried outside, makes me feel a bit sick.
I am of a generation where a lot of people smoked and so fabric softener scent really felt worth it.
There is a fair bit of snobbery on Mumsnet against these products but I don't care, thankfully!
@solsticelove do you have any links to research about such products being endocrine disruptors? Sorry I am sceptical about such claims without evidence to back them up, especially as a lot of ads feature kids, which they would surely avoid if there was proof of good evidence of harm

Do you honestly think advertisers and big companies like Proctor & Gamble would have any qualms about using children in their ads knowing that the perfumes (amongst other ingredients) are a catastrophe for human health? With respect I’m amazed you would be so naïve. Of course they know! They are only interested in one single thing; profits above all else.

Anyway, sorry I thought this was common knowledge today otherwise I’d have posted links but here’s one that comes up from a very quick Google:

I like a good scent on my laundry and do use scent boosters sometimes , they are very strong so I don't use the ridiculous recommended dose, just throw a wee bit in & then it's more subtle still long lasting.
I don't have an xlbully either 😄

Theoldwoman · 04/07/2024 00:03

I prefer fresh sunny smelling laundry, fortunately where I live that’s what we get nearly all year round.

RosesAndHellebores · 04/07/2024 00:03

My eczema would flare if I put a scented detergent in the utility cupboard. I'm itching just thinking about it.

Yeah I'm a scent person
Reed diffusers, wax melts, perfume collector etc
I draw the line at plug ins Grin and my windows are always open at home so lots of fresh air too. My dad hates "choking scented crap" as he calls it and the most he ever says is the place smells nice and clean

GrinAndBeerIt · 04/07/2024 04:21

On clothing no, it interferes with the scent of my perfume.
On bedding and towels yes. I use a different laundry liquid and fabric conditioner on those to the one I use on clothing.
I hate the smell of fairy laundry detergent. It's honking.

protectoroftherealm · 04/07/2024 06:08

I like a subtle smell on mine.

I don't like the smell of clothes when they're dried on the line though but I am aware that puts me in a minority!

MoveMoveMove · 04/07/2024 06:15

I only realised some people didn't use fabric conditioner when started using mn!
I love the stuff, anything that I can still smell at the end of the day when I'm getting undressed gets my vote.
Everyone else in my family/friendship group also uses fabric conditioner, plug ins, Reed diffusers and scented cleaning products so mn is a revelation sometimes.
I don't own an XL bully but I do shop in B&M sometimes 🤷‍♀️😆

I suspect I smell slightly of my moisturiser, shampoo/conditioner and (when I wear it) perfume. That seems like enough to me.

I use a non scented, hypoallergenic deoderant, and for laundry an unscented non bio powder and no fabric conditioner. I do try avoid smelling of whatever I’ve cooked for dinner by putting drying laundry outside when I’m cooking.

My choices are allergy related, but also wouldn’t having lots of different smells on your body clash or maybe cancel each other out?

NewtGuineaPig · 04/07/2024 06:26

No it's vile.

Jujubeez · 04/07/2024 06:33

No, it makes me sneeze.

Laundry dried on the line when there's snow on the ground - now that smells divine!
