They're still claiming they were misunderstood and this is all a vendetta. But they're not going to appeal the decision for reasons blah blah blah. Because they know they wouldn't win?

Yes I thought I didn't imagine that. That's just gross.

TheHallmarkedMan · 04/07/2024 11:18

I remember at the time some news about Harry and Meghan cropped up and someone posted, "please don't mention those two in the midst of all the lovely updates from our wonderful Captain Tom"

I did chuckle 😃

All those memes of him walking with overlaid images of WWII soldiers standing to attention, were so cringe worthy, and that one of him and the Queen walking off into the clouds. Christ!

Exactly he did fuck all in the war and then was a roofing salesman.

OneFrenchEgg · 04/07/2024 11:39

I don't think it's fair to say he did fuck all in the war, he did his bit and I think his service record isn't over shadowed by his later exploits.

www.army.mod.uk/people/leaving-well/service-leavers-veterans/army-skills/captain-sir-tom-moore/

I think he was canny but also used for PR by media and government (including Barbados, wtf) and it got too tempting to grab as much as possible for all of them.

Sharontheodopolodous · 04/07/2024 12:30

Those two are total grifters

You only have to look at their faces and body language to see that-Wimbledon was a cringy classic case of what she thinks of herself

Greedy,selfish and grabby grifters

I remember during covid, our next door neighbour rang the police as we didn't appear at our doorway, banging our pans and making loads of noise

They came out!

What she didn't know, was we'd just had a call to say my darling fil had cancer-wed better get to them if we wanted to say our goodbyes (they lived 200 miles away)

As we're running round in a daze, flinging knickers and our toothbrushes into a suitcase,we had to explain to the police why we where refusing to bang-a-pan and scream into the night

Capt tom was about by about that time-i remember the song coming out not long after fil died

I commented to dp that this was getting a bit too much hero worship and to my mil-'the daughter is loving this a bit too much'

She agreed but said that I 'better not say that on your computer' (She meant the internet)

Fast forward, capt tom is dead, and the house of cards falls down

I don't think he was 'in on it' but he knew exactly what his dd is like,he loved the fame,he loved the attention,he loved getting his knighthood, the freebie holiday-he loved it all

I do think he thought the book profits where to be donated to the NHS charities-hes pretty clear about this in the book (that I did buy, second hand on ebay-i think i read about 5 pages and gave up-it was crap and badly written)

She and that husband saw an opportunity and ran with it-its a classic case of greed-they have money, but for that type, its never enough-they saw the profits and wanted in-sod what her father wanted,it was all about 'me,myself and i'

They also made the classic mistake of thinking that Piers Morgan is/was their friend as he'd been their biggest supporter-he turned on them pretty fast

I don't think the other dd is in on it-she seems to keep away from it all-She knows exactly what her sister is,but isn't like that herself

I can’t imagine they’re very sad about being banned as trustees, they don’t strike me as the type to do anything to better someone else’s life!

The best thing about Captain Tom was that he inspired Tony Hudgell to do his walk, and gave him a spotlight. Far more deserved.

Personally I think TH should have been kept out of the spot light and allowed as normal a childhood as possible.

@KnitnNatterAuntie I never thought it was innocent. I think he was in on it, a very cold, calculating and publicity seeking man. She's a chip off the old block.

Me neither. I got in trouble from my headteacher because I refused to do an assembly on him in lockdown or send out the worksheets that were from Twinkl about him. The whole thing seemed bizarre to me.

People were in these terrible circumstances in lockdown. Like the boy who died by himself and people not being able to go to the funeral of their husbands who they had been married to for decades. Women being killed by domestic violence and then this bloke was supposed to bring a beacon of hope by being rich and privileged.

I agree. He was a rich Tory voter his whole life.

I was sceptical before anyone else ever questioned it though, it was far, far too slick a PR campaign from the very start. Far too heavily managed for it to be a random innocent viral thing.

Edited

I have read some mad rubbish on here, but this tops the lot. How do you know he was a Tory voter? What a ridiculous slur to use.

That one was hilarious 😂

None of it would have happened if the British weren't utterly obsessed with WWII.

He was chair of the local Young Conservatives Association according to a Guardian article I read about him

We should be grateful though, that it gave us the wonder that is the Captain Tom mini skirt.

Wasn't Paddington featured too? Or am I confused?

Omg I'm getting one for my sister's impending birthday. She'll love it 😆

Supersimkin7 · 04/07/2024 15:19

The NHS wasted most of the millions they got.

No one saw that coming either.

ClawdeenWolf · 04/07/2024 15:25

@eggplant16 I think Paddington came for him at the end. Or am I confusing him with the Queen? It was all the same Boy, Horse, Dog twee cuntery in any case.

I think Paddington came for Prince Phillip too. He's the new Angel of Death. Never mind the blue duffle coat, he's in a black cape and carrying a scythe these days.

its not possible to donate yo the NHS. The money raised by CT went to NHS charities https://nhscharitiestogether.co.uk/

I dont think most people realised this at the time and many still don’t. They thought they were donating to buy things like ventilators

He knew about it, he appeared on quiz shows, he wasn't scared of the limelight. His daughter happened to be good at PR to make more out of it until she took him to Barbados and Russ Abbot killed him off gave him covid.

That's grim isn't it, I mean no respect for his first wife at all.

OneFrenchEgg · 04/07/2024 16:34

I think it's also very interesting. My grandad was posted abroad during the war and would be a decade older maybe than captain tom? He fixed aged 90 ten years ago. There is no way he, or others I knew in the family of that generation, would have put anything so personal and violating in a book, or spoken about it in private really let alone in public.

Absolutely not nobody would have spoken like this. Imo
