They're still claiming they were misunderstood and this is all a vendetta. But they're not going to appeal the decision for reasons blah blah blah. Because they know they wouldn't win?

I've just seen this on the BBC website

I'm quite sure it's the correct decision by the Charities Commission but I find it awfully sad that what started as something innocent at a time of national upheaval has turned out to be such an utter fiasco

I think Hannah I-M and her husband have potentially done untold damage to charities as they've caused the public to mistrust charities and I'm sure this will cause a drop in donations

Captain Tom seemed like such a lovely gentleman . . . I am appalled at how his daughter has behaved and she seems unable to take responsibility for her actions

OneFrenchEgg · 03/07/2024 18:01

Oh I just posted on the original thread, I'll add my post here.

leeverarch · 03/07/2024 18:03

Good. I could never stand her. It is all fairly local to us, and it's so sad the way they have tarnished his memory so disgracefully like this.

OneFrenchEgg · 03/07/2024 18:03

I came to find a thread on the latest update and didn't see one - both have been disqualified from charity trustee ship, ahead of the outcome of the investigation.

It feels such a murky story right from the start really - how much was Captain Tom and the collective madness of the nation and leaders seeing some good PR.

The pair were being investigated as part of an ongoing inquiry by the Charity Commission into the management of The Captain Tom Foundation

Haven't they already got away with a lot of money though? I doubt they care that much, they'll self justify

lundland · 03/07/2024 18:33

It WAS murky from the start, there were many people who tried to point this out but they were ridiculed at the time.

What a mess, what a pair of venal charlatans.

Riapia · 03/07/2024 18:35

I believe that Capt Tom as badly deceived as the rest of us by those that he should have been able to trust.

Noosnom · 03/07/2024 18:38

What a surprise. They seemed dodgy and weird from the start.

caringcarer · 03/07/2024 18:55

They always love ked a dodgy pair. I'm glad they've been exposed. I just hope they are ordered to repay all that money. I feel sorry for Captain Tom's other daughter who must be furious to hear how her sister made a scandal of her Dad's good deeds for charity and had nothing to do with as my of this.

Apparently they've kept the £800,000 from the sale of Capt.Tom's book.

This latest is very public, so too was the demolishing of the pool house they built without planning permission. £800k might go a long way to making it feel better, but wouldn't you feel just a tiny twinge of conscience? Or don't they have one?

It said Capt. Tom's book when I typed it.

Omg she did, I missed that or forgot it.
If my mum suddenly became some amazing famous philanthropist I would definitely charge expenses but also at 76 she wouldn't understand why I wanted money to go to a company etc etc ('club nook'??) and she may well say I should keep some for my time but I wouldn't be letting her write the foreword pretending it was all for charity.
I never bought the amazing chap stuff anyway, deifying anyone is a bad idea.

Craftysue · 03/07/2024 21:12

It's such a shame - I just feel they've sullied that poor man's name - I genuinely believe he fund raised for the right reasons
RIP Captain Tom

WinterMorn · 04/07/2024 06:23

I am surprised there are no criminal charges to be honest!

ZenNudist · 04/07/2024 06:29

Turns out being a fraud pays. I never bought a book or donated as I think there are better charities (clearly). I feel sad for the people who looked up to Captain Tom. I still think he was genuine.

AnnieMcFanny · 04/07/2024 06:29

@OneFrenchEgg he certainly wasn’t amazing when talking about his first wife and giving his version of their private life.

C1N1C · 04/07/2024 06:34

Did she get that hot tub in the end ?

Yeah that's kind of the thing I meant, I watched it and was a bit Confused I mean everyone has a past etc etc but it was the weird elevating him stuff all the raising his rank, etc

Poolstream · 04/07/2024 06:52

According to Wiki he was only a temporary Captain.
Who clings onto a temporary title for 75 years.
Bizarre family.

CoffeandTiaMaria · 04/07/2024 07:02

I think Captain Tom wasn’t the innocent old man he appeared to be either; I think his daughter exploited him initially then he happily lapped up the accolades
From the start I wondered why his other daughter didn’t seem to support him too, now it’s obvious why.
They’ve got their comeuppance, it’s just a pity that they weren’t charged with anything, despicable couple.
Poor children though.

No they had to remove the building. They are also selling the house

It always felt off to me, old man walks around garden to raise money, in the grounds of his mansion....

It turned in to a good thing sure, and raised a lot of money, but I never understood the sainthood status he gained.

OneFrenchEgg · 04/07/2024 08:09

It was a good news story wasn't it, with loads of selling points - military, elderly chap, posh family doing their bit etc etc. the daughter I recall started raising publicity and Piers Morgan picked it up.

KnitnNatterAuntie · 04/07/2024 08:10

I think it's very interesting that Captain Tom's other daughter has stayed well clear of the whole situation

It seemed bizarre to me that Captain Tom would tell Hannah I-M that he wanted her alone to benefit from the sale of his books (as she alleged in her TV interview) rather than share the profits between the two sisters.

I truly believe that he never said this at all and wanted the profits to go to charity and that she is guilty of fraud but, of course, this is now impossible to prove
