They're still claiming they were misunderstood and this is all a vendetta. But they're not going to appeal the decision for reasons blah blah blah. Because they know they wouldn't win?

@KnitnNatterAuntie I never thought it was innocent. I think he was in on it, a very cold, calculating and publicity seeking man. She's a chip off the old block.

eggplant16 · 04/07/2024 08:14

It was all very odd, a collective madness. Raising money for the NHS, what was all that about?

The singing with Michael Ball.??

Westfacing · 04/07/2024 08:17

I think the nation went a bit bonkers during Covid - it was totally over the top that he was knighted by the Queen when there are so many people who've had a lifetime of selfless charity work who receive one of the lower awards, or nothing.

I feel sad for my very elderly neighbour who was really invested in this. I thought he seemed like a rather unpleasant man with an unpleasant, self serving, wealthy family.

WindsurfingDreams · 04/07/2024 08:22

Everyone assuming captain tom was lovely - we have no idea. He was very elderly and we heard a few soundbites from him and watched him walk around a garden a few times. I think people project their version of him based on very little , because they needed a nice hero at a difficult time

Exactly. There were incredible people doing amazing things everywhere. People lost their minds over "Captain" Tom and very little of it was based on any substance.

CoffeandTiaMaria · 04/07/2024 08:24

Me too @eggplant16 , there was just something very ‘off’ about it all. And his daughter was milking it for everything she could- her behaviour at Wimbledon was simply sickening, wtf everyone was lauding her beats me.

BurntBroccoli · 04/07/2024 08:26

Felt very uncomfortable about the whole thing at the time. Coincided with the days of clapping...

Confusedbythistreat · 04/07/2024 08:29

I think it did just happen at a time when people needed something, I do look back and think wtaf

narniabusiness · 04/07/2024 08:30

The TV companies are partly or even mainly to blame. They kept sticking it him on the TV night after night. I’m sure we were given the impression he was walking round his nursing home not a mansion. People wanted to help the NHS and staff with the costs of the pandemic and understandably wanted to contribute but it was the BBC would promoted these characters.

PuppyMonkey · 04/07/2024 08:30

I remember at the time, every time there was an interview with this lot I felt really uncomfortable and had to switch over. I don’t usually have that sort of reaction to a cute human interest story and can usually let it all wash over my head, but I really didn’t want to watch this.

eggplant16 · 04/07/2024 08:32

It was collective insanity. We hadn't seen anybody for months and I did the first " clapping" session, I'm ashamed to say.
Do you remember when people thought they could catch covid from a gate latch? The sanitising, the charity shop goods being put in plastic buckets to decontaminate and so on?

ClawdeenWolf · 04/07/2024 08:36

I've personally filed Captain Tom in the same box as people who clapped for the NHS. It was all ridiculous, embarrassing bollocks and I cringed every time I saw him on TV. Bunch of poshos feeding off the fear of the masses.

I believe that Capt Tom as badly deceived as the rest of us by those that he should have been able to trust.

Or maybe Captain Tom was the brains behind it all and his daughter/SIL are the fall guys? 😏

Absolutely not!!!! It's obvious that H I-M's appalling behaviour, since the death of her father, has shown her to be greedy and conniving . . .

The 'hot tub scenario' is just one indicator of her true character

And her husband is obviously a major part of the picture too

I believe it's quite rare for the Charities Commission to take the steps that they have just announced in relation to these two people

LizzieBennett73 · 04/07/2024 08:49

The thing that upset me most was them dragging him to Barbados.

Unspeakably cruel to travel that far with someone of his age.

FanofLeaves · 04/07/2024 08:55

One day someone will write an interesting book or a documentary on how we collectively lost our minds a bit at the time. I was always cynical of Captain Tom but it was a funny old time for a lot of people.

greenpolarbear · 04/07/2024 08:59

CoffeandTiaMaria · 04/07/2024 07:02

I think Captain Tom wasn’t the innocent old man he appeared to be either; I think his daughter exploited him initially then he happily lapped up the accolades
From the start I wondered why his other daughter didn’t seem to support him too, now it’s obvious why.
They’ve got their comeuppance, it’s just a pity that they weren’t charged with anything, despicable couple.
Poor children though.

I agree. He was a rich Tory voter his whole life.

I was sceptical before anyone else ever questioned it though, it was far, far too slick a PR campaign from the very start. Far too heavily managed for it to be a random innocent viral thing.

HowIrresponsible · 04/07/2024 09:04

Didn't Captain Tom write a book slagging off his first wife because she wouldnt have sex with him? What an odd think to do at 99.

He was also never on the front line, he was India tasked with setting up and running a training programme for army motorcyclists.

As soon as the war was over he became a salesman.

He was in on it too. I never understood the obsession with the curmudgeonly old sod.

Yes I participated in the first clap - didn't know what was going on though and popped my head out the door. Neighbour ushered me to join in and I couldn't say no for some reason.
That was the only time though as it felt awkward and weird. I had to play loud music or go out for a walk on subsequent occasions.

According to Wiki he was only a temporary Captain.
Who clings onto a temporary title for 75 years.
Bizarre family.

Exactly, and it's only the ranks of major and above who keep their military titles anyway. My retired army dad never used his, because he thought it a bit dickish.

whotochoose · 04/07/2024 09:42

The whole thing was ridiculous, gave me the ick right from the start!

I think I thought that! But was scared to say so at the time!

There were loads of crazies on here screaming at people to stay inside and judging peoppe for not applauding the nhs and thinking Tom was a lovely hero. Old codger walked round a garden...seriously scraping the barrell didn't cover it. Who gave a shit about him.
