Did your lost cat come home?

My friend is so upset that their cat has been missing for over a week. She's done flyers and social media messages but nothing.
We're hoping she's just lost and trying to find her way back home and eventually will.
Any hopeful stories?

Ours was missing for 3 months, we got him back through his chip. He was found miles away, don’t know if he’d jumped into a van or something.

Moved house August 2020 and my cat escaped the carrier and we couldn't catch him. Came back to look for over a month but no luck. January 2021 just before lockdown we accepted he wasn't coming back and adopted a new kitten. March 2021 on the local Facebook page someone has posted my cat - he was hanging around the old neighbourhood and they had been feeding him. I am now the owner of 2 lovely cats!

Mine ran off after thé noise from the vet's tractor frightened her. She shot off and lost her way as she'd stopped going out as much. The weather'd turned very cold so we were worried. She turned up about 400 yds away huddled down the side of a garage. The owner said he'd thought to have seen a young fox. Luckily she didn't attack his hens. She had a very bushy tail. She stayed glued to me after that.

My Granny's cat came home after about 40 days - lived a good long life after that and we used to laugh about her adventure.

Reassuring to hear of all the long periods and so lovely to hear of the reunions.
Still no cat or news 😞

One near me was found after a month lost, pregnant with kittens. 🙈

caringcarer · 03/07/2024 23:41

Sadly no. I had a gorgeous Bengal girl. I think she was stolen because 2 really flooffy Maine Coon cats who lived a few doors away went missing on the same day. They were all microchipped and neutered but a thief would not have known this. Our vet told us a few other cats had been reported missing either the day before or after. All very pretty and less usual cats. The vet told us he thought they may be stolen to breed. Once the thief realised they didn't get pregnant they'd probably throw them out. She never came home and neither did the Maine Coons either. We had posters up and a reward offered for her safe return.

Mine went missing nearly 3 years ago & never been found!

We had a sighting & borrowed a trap from cats rescue to try & get him back but still didn't manage to catch him!

It's heart breaking , we have 2 new rescue cats because we so missed having a cat around & have cat proofed the garden - no way could I cope with losing another one!

I tell myself he's living his best life on someone else's sofa but it doesn't help really! 😕

LoreleiG · 04/07/2024 13:17

One of mine turned up after 3.5 years at the vets. He had been living two streets away.

I would advise your friend to actively search garages in the area and put hot tuna out at dawn and dusk as if the cat is hiding for some reason, it will come out then to find food.

Lifesd · 04/07/2024 13:19

I have 3 stories of hope, the first one of my mums Siamese who went missing for 8 months and was found in a farmers field - this was the days before social media so how is beyond me.

second my aunts cat who was missing for 6 months and was found in a garden 2 streets away

third - my cat who was missing a week and after much door knocking and posters/flyers were found by a kind couple and we got him back!

LoveRules · 04/07/2024 13:22

Yes! 6 months after our newly adopted cat got out we got a call from a far flung vet that a kind person had brought in a skinny flea riddled stray to be scanned for a chip. He was ours. We were overjoyed and also so sad that the poor thing had not been able to find his way home and survived a treacherous winter. He's such a friendly but squittish little thing he must have been terrified, freezing and hungry for a lot of the time he was missing

FunnysInLaJardin · 04/07/2024 13:25

Yes, after 2 years and covered in fleas!

LoveRules · 04/07/2024 13:28

We have now bought a GPS tracker and as have just moved house need to be really cautious about introducing him to the outdoors.

He was adopted by us as a stray before he got lost so definitely has form for getting lost and not knowing how to get home! Poor thing.

We'll be only letting him out when very hungry and calling him back but always with the GPS tracker device

Stickytreacle · 04/07/2024 13:48

My ex feral housecat escaped and we didn't see him for four and a half months. I trapped and neutered another two ferals that had been eating the food out for him, which I also brought in, and lo and behold he turned up and we trapped him the following night. I think the two toms made him too scared to come back. This is how you end up with too many cats!

TheNoonBell · 04/07/2024 13:55

Lost one of mine for several months, she had shacked up with another family and then came wandering back. We assumed she was dead.

The same cat had previously got stuck in a neighbours garage for over a week and was only found after I leafleted the whole road asking people to check their garages/sheds. So worth trying that.

Edit: Forgot to add, good luck, hope it is a happy ending!

I found mine after 6 days 🥰

It was the worst six days of my life- I was so worried about her!
I did Facebook posts, flyers, the lot. Got so many calls of people who had spotted black cats, I went out and followed every lead but no luck. Even had a phone call from someone putting on a fake Chinese accent saying they found my cat and ate her, and how delicious she was.

I responded to a call around 5pm on day 6 from a woman who said a little black cat had been hanging around in her front garden all day and she had casually told a friend about it, who had seen one of my posters. I went to get her and seeing her run over to me is up there with the best moments in my life!

However, I don’t think she would ever have made it home on her own. She was on a street on the other side of the canal. There are bridges but I honestly don’t know how she got there. She never usually leaves my cul de sac, I think one day she felt adventurous and wandered too far, then lost her bearings. Where I found her was a 4min drive but easily a 15/20min walk due to the canal in the way.

SuperGinger · 13/08/2024 14:32

I saw details of a missing cat on facebook. Some weeks later, I was walking in a local park and saw a cat, went back to where I had seen the ad online contacted the person via FB messenger who went round, it was their cat and they were happily reunited.

afaloren · 13/08/2024 14:36

My lost cat never came home Sad BUT a little cat had jumped in a tradesman’s van miles away and jumped out again in our area. The owners travelled up and put flyers and food and all sorts and after two weeks she was found! So it can happen Smile

bringonyourwreckingball · 13/08/2024 14:39

Mine came back after nearly a month - or rather I had a message on the WhatsApp for our road that a someone at the other end thought she might be living in their greenhouse. Had to go on a rescue mission with dreamies.

I'd like to be shut in a library over a long weekend. Imagine the peace and quiet!

My cat was shut in the local bakery for the entire August bank holiday weekend. Apparently she frightened the life out of the woman who opened up on the Tuesday morning - she had said goodbye to her small black-and-white one-eyed cat at home, got to the bakery, and there was a small black-and-white one-eyed cat sitting inside waiting to be let out. What are the odds of that?😂 She ran out and came home to us completely unphased, and the baker came to tell us where she'd been when she saw me taking down flyers later that day.

My DH's childhood cat came home after a year, so don't give up hope. Put out used cat litter if possible to help the cat find its way home, and go out calling very early in the morning when it's quiet.

CurlewKate · 29/09/2024 12:53

I have a wanderer. The longest she has been gone is 13 days. It's a bit nerve wracking, but it's her.

FerienInLipizza · 29/09/2024 12:58

My friends cat came back after eleven days. He had to have been shut in a shed as he had eroded his nose away running it under a door or something.

He was thin and dehydrated but recovered OK and has been a home body ever since.
